Z4M Warning Lights

I wonder if I could have you thoughts on this. I have a 2008 08 BMW Z4M with 35,000 miles one the clock. I was driving the car the other day when the engine cut out at a junction. When I restarted the car the DSC Warning Light, The ABS Warning Light and the Tyre Pressure Control Warning Light all came on (yellow).

I booked it into my local BMW Garage (I have the extended warranty but with a £100 excess) to look. They have just phoned me back after looking at it. Apparently there is nothing wrong with the car and they were asking if the battery had ever went flat. The answer is no but they have said the battery was run down slightly which might have caused the error lights to come on. I have asked if I need a new battery and they have said the tests carried out show that it is charging and holding its charge so no.

My slight gripe is that they are charging me £96 pounds (just under the price of the warranty) for finding nothing wrong with the car which I feel is a bit on the high side for a quick diagnostic.

What do you think? Also, if I do need a new battery what sort of price should I be paying?

Thanks in advance

Ouch, you'll get a decent battery online for £90. Or if your in a hurry go to Halfords.

I had the exact same experience only my battery died a couple of times before booking it in with BMW. I had the used car warranty and they tested the battery and told me because they find no problem then I had to pay £120 diagnostic charge!! This is because they cant claim the cost back from BMW as no problem was found.

I bought the Bosch S5 online for around £80 It has been bullet proof for over a year now and has a 5yr warranty.

Cheers for the response. Spoke to the dealer and explained my unhappiness. They have agreed it is likely to be the battery but if it happens again they will carry out the diagnostics free of charge.

The other strange thing is that apparently the warning lights did not throw up any error codes within the computer.

Hopefully it will be fine now but it is a bit annoying when you purchase the extended warranty to cover these types of things. I would have minded paying for a new battery. I know these aren't covered by the warranty but £96 would have been better spent towards that.

Never mind.

The decisions now is to whether to keep it or not. I love the car but I need a back seat. Options are:

1) keep the car and get a another for day to day use.

2) sell the car and put the money towards something else.

I like the audi a7 (if I am going to change a need something completely different otherwise I will always try and compare the z4m with it). The local dealer has one in, fully loaded with the 3.0l diesel engine for 33,000. I have been offered 13,500 for mine as an opening offer but sure I can push more out of the deal. Decisions.

My battery went flat the other day, (car not used for 2-3 months, new OEM battery in July '11). After jump starting, "just" with battery pack I also had all the lights on. After a 15 min drive I restarted the car and this cleared all the lights. Seems that if you have marginal juice in the battery on start-up this type of thing happens.

Audi?? *shudder* :P.

I had a similar problem when starting after a fuel stop, all the lights you had came on, and including the EML light. Doubt it's connected to yours but I've got mine booked in for Tuesday so I'll let you know if it throws anything up.

An Audi A7 with 33k miles? Surely they've only be available for about six months. Still, really like them, good choice.

Unless you mean Q7 of course in which case urghh!!

Same here after a fuel stop. Mine went into limp mode too until I'd made three restarts. That reset everything and it's been totally fine since (0ver 2 years)

Having the 3 warning lights for ABS, DSC and tyre pressure come on after a low voltage start seems to be normal. I left my car to cold-soak a bit long the other day at -29°C (12 hours sitting at work, -31°C when I left it at 7am, -28°C high for the day, -29°C when I returned to it at 7pm), got the 3 lights when starting, but voltage didn't quite drop low enough to turn the clock to "--:--". When it is very cold it is a bit of a dilema on when to restart to clear the faults, as the car hunts between 1-1.5K RPM and won't rev past 2K RPM until restarted, but you don't want to restart until there is a bit of heat in the engine, so that it is easier to turn over. Seems best to leave it for about 2 mins befere a restart and drive off, if this condition appears in very cold weather.
