Z4M vs 997 S

OK, it was a few months ago but I only just got around to posting.

I took the Z4M on an Andy Walsh driving day at North Weald (http://www.carlimits.com). It's not the first time I've done it -- I took the TVR there when I had it. The conclusion is that the Z4M is a proper car for a hooligan. I was coming out of hairpins sideways and holding sideways halfway down the main straight, looking out of the side windows the whole time!

In the final part round the coned-out track, you get one of the other participants as a passenger. The other three people had brought an MX-5, an Elise and a 911 S (997-spec) to the party. All were most impressed with the sideways controllability of the Z4, even with numpty me driving. And all agreed the noise from outside was fantastic. I went out with the 911 driver, and his car was perfectly smooth on the limit, drifting out to the edge of the track pointing forwards all the time. But it wasn't much fun, although I think quicker around the track than me. He also had the yellow-caliper carbon ceramic brakes, and my god they're impressive. I reckon he was braking in about half the space that I was.

So the summary is:
1) Z4M is the perfect car for hooligans, and really controllable on the limit even for numpties, as long as you like going sideways
2) Porsche carbon ceramic brakes are amazing -- I've been investigating if you can get them aftermarket for a Z4
3) I don't really want a 911, although it is an amazingly accomplished piece of kit
4) I have confidence in the Z4M in a way that was totally unachievable with the TVR (it was, and still is as far as I know, a 4.2 Cerbera)
5) carlimits.com are highly recommended by me for exploring the limits of your Z4.

A quick confession: half the reason I bought the Z4MC was that on my previous Andy Walsh day (with the TVR) there was a guy who turned up in an M3 CSL. The sound was fantastic, and I thought "I must have that" :)

Carbon ceramics are available from Brembo on the aftrmarket, but they're pretty pricey - over $12k USD iirc.

Z4Ms seem to post impressive times on tracks generally when in the hands of the likes of the Stig. Personally I love the 'hooligan' element of these cars. It's the antithesis (If that's how you spell it :) ) of the Nissan GT-R and all it's high tech wizzardry.
Off topic why have Porsche got involved in a playground squabble with Nissan over the Ring times of the GT-R??? Well done Nissan for standing up to them and even taking the p**s :poke:

Hey good job Carl - Andy is amazing isn't he. Got a day with him and the owner of Nitron (Andy uses Nitron) later in the month.

Did you have any wheel/tyre issues? Were you on 18 or 19's?

Standard 18s. Ended up pumping them up to 50psi. At 45psi I was still running a good few inches up the sidewalls on the high-speed bend.

Thanks for that Carl.

My plan is to re-fit the OE 18's with original tyres and take the 19's with new tyres for the drive home. Did you get close to wrecking the rear tyres? (If not then I can probably forget taking a spare set of rears with me.)

We have a GT3 on Nitron, a standard GT3 and my Z4M going next week. Your post has got my juices flowing now and I will try to take some video. Just need to find a camera mount now!

Not even close. Andy always says that if you're doing it properly you will get 1mm of tyre wear. Mine ended up with the tread blocks looking pretty ragged, but still plenty of tread depth. Now after a couple of months of ordinary driving they look fine again.

Of course, you have to have some mechanical sympathy. When you do the circles bit, do half a dozen one way then half a dozen the other. If you just keep going round and round in the same direction then you'll overheat the tyres on one side.

TBH I think the fact that there are pauses between each bit of hooning allows the tyres to remain relatively cool. It's when tyres overheat that they start unravelling like swiss rolls.

Any update from your day?

I have driven 997 so many time .. if compare to the base 997 cab .. then MZ4 should hv a chance .. but 997S ? not even close.

By the end of the day, Porsche 911 is still awesome car, and I have to agree it is nicer car then MZ in general, esp the 911S.

I agree the MZ is a bit more exciting to drive .. and after you drive the MZ for years, and jump into a newer 911 .. you will find the 911 is a bit too civilize .. but after driving a 911 for a day or 2 .. you will love it!

The new 390 HP 997 is even nicer ....

Hey .. but MZ is only 3/5 price of a 997 S cab! :P :P

(between MZ Roadster and Boxster S, will be tough call ... )

Piano I think the 997S would not be as fast as you think compared to the M. I have driven both lots of times and there is very little in it, especially on a track.

:P 997S is quite a bit faster then ZM coupe on the track too, esp on straight line .. we are talking ~ half a second 0-60mph time ...

Again, both are not super fast cars, but both great cars, however, they are not in the same league ..

:? If M Roadster vs 997S Cab (up to 2008) then they are pretty close ... and M Roadster only cost 1/2!!! :P

I want to ask this question before, somehow, every magazine, has better performance result on the M Roadster then the M coupe ... yes, the M coupe is around 50lb more, but shouldn't make any different, in fact, I can "feel" my M Roadster is a bit faster then my M coupe too .. :driving:

:P still . 1 M Roadster +1 M Coupe = price for 1 same options 997S cab with Hard top! so .. not bad!! lol

(but after having the new 390 HP 997S cab for the weekend .. I want to trade both M to 1 997S lol  )

Did I say anything about whether it was faster or slower around the track? I just said the Z4M was more fun.

Oh .. sorry .. for that then I agree M Roadster is damn fun to drive .. I found more fun in M Roadster then Boxster/Cayman .. and almost as fun as 911 ... (newest one is too civilize)

Same as E92 M3 ... I found E46 M3 is more "fun" to drive .. :| (E30 M3 .. is "too much" fun to drive .. :P

Ive never been in a 997 but i can comment that after 8 years with Porsches... 964 and a BoxsterS my Z4MR is waaaay more fun and so addictive :D

Thats very subjective, one persons fun is anothers hell, all u can really say is that something is more fun to you...and I agree the M is more fun...although the Turbo, well thats a different story :D

Hi Carl,

Yes it was a good day and I certainly kept up my rather high tyre wear rate. The day before I went to swap my wheel back over to std but completely forgot about the AP brakes. Fronts have so little clearance the balance weights foul the calipers so I ended up with CSL wheels on the front and std 18's on the back.

We had a standard GT3, a modified GT3 and my car. I did not think I would be able to drift a 911 but that worked out real nice at low speed.

The last time I did a Walshy day was in a VX220 Turbo so I did need Andy's expertise in fine tuning some aspects of my technique but what he can make a car do is just amazing.

All in all great fun and I would be happy with either a 911 or a Z4M!
