z4M to E93 m3

Ewwww.

I dunno...

That S55 is turning into a right ball of crap.....

Turbo's-Smoking and rattling.
Cam ledge wear and misalignment .
Cam wear
Hydraulic lifter failures
Crank hub failures

Another S derived failure IMHO..
Still very few cases when compared to production numbers.

Either way as I said if you have warranty there is no reason for concern.

To be fair they are not a massively popular car,so when they engines are corking at under 10k miles and in warranty then i call that a crap show.

Its ok saying buy one in warranty,so under 3 yrs old or AUC... Either way pay the BMW premium.

There are a lot now out of warranty,so what happens to them... Just have a £10k bill on a 4yr old car and think thats acceptable,no thanks..

Wouldn’t recommend Z4M to E93 M3.

They are too heavy and are quite ‘boaty’ when compared to the Z4’s chassis.

A better car to upgrade to would be the F83 M4 Convertible. Again a heavier car but has a lot more low down torque, which makes it easier for pottering around town and driving fast on B roads. The sound of its twin-turbo S55 engine gets a lot of stick by forum members and owner clubs and doesn’t sound great on YouTube videos. However in real life, when paired up with the likes of an M Performance or Akrapovic exhaust they sound pretty good under full load and have a rasp characteristic that is similar to that of the S54 engine.
I was pleasantly surprised when I had a test drive in a M4 Convertible regards the noise. They do get plenty of stick noise wise(some of it is warranted to be fair though), but it wasn't as bad as I was expecting with the roof down. I do quite fancy a M4 Convertible because I do appreciate torque, and I never felt that my E92 M3 really had enough of it for its 1650kg kerbweight. It would feel very flat at lows revs but it did have a mental top end that made up for it though.

Get an extended warranty...

Pretty simple if you ask me.

So pay for an expensive car from a dealer

Then pay again for the privilege of it not breaking down every month .. BMW really have got the fanboys brainwashed..

This isn’t a Ferrari or Porsche

It’s a rep mobile with a turbo engine ... nothing special to command it’s high failure rate and extortionate repair costs..

1. £25,000 for an M4 isn’t expensive, considering it was a £60,000 car brand new.

2. It’s more financially viable to pay for an extended warranty than to chance it and end up with big bills for the aforementioned failures.

3. Taking out a warranty doesn’t make one a ‘brainwashed fanboy’ it’s a way of protecting oneself from financial detriment.

4. It’s a repmobile that is faster than your Z4M on the Nurburgring :P

5. ‘High failure’ is a hyperbolic claim based on what evidence exactly? Cross reference production numbers with failures and I’m sure you’ll find the ‘failure’ rate is reasonably low.

6. I’m pretty sure a low mileage M4 would cost a lot less to run than a 10 year old E9X M3 which will need rod bearings, throttle actuators, subframe rust, bushes and brakes attended to. Oh and cheaper than any Ferrari or Porsche for that matter either.

And get the added bonus of driving a 2 series Active Tourer for a week or two each time something goes wrong :P

How many of your cars have extended warranty?

You say £25,000 isn’t expensive for an M4, when it’s a £60k new . Yea it’s £60-£70k for a 3 series coupe .. are you insane ???
The reason they lose half there value in 3 years is because they are grossly overpriced and the market corrects there value .

Paying £100-£200 a month to ensure your £60-£70k 3 yr old car doesn’t break is good financial sense??
Yea.... ok... if you say so... I think that’s absolute robbery and unjustifiable.

High failure rate ... this shouldn’t be happening at all in cars with low miles.. it’s an engineering disaster. I can accept failure rates when an engine is 100k into its life.. but not 10 or 20k.. it’s poor engineering at BMW’s end and penny pinching, pure and simple.

A newer car should be a lot cheaper to run shouldnt it than an older car ... What’s your point? Neither are great cars and I would suspect that over the years and miles they would cost similar..
The E9x M car at least has some longevity in its engine repairs.. ie, you know you should get the rod bearings and throttle actuators done at xxxxxx miles ....with the F series the engine, turbos etc can crap out at any time with no prior warning due to poor design. Age or mileage has no bearing on when a colossal bill is heading your way.

I have owned Porsche’s in warranty ... fortunately they never went wrong and extended warranty was £650 a year ,costs buttons to run as a daily, service every 2 years and sold for more than I bought it for

Let that just sink in

I had my M coupe in for paint warranty and drove one of them Shyteboxes for nearly 3 months whilst BMW got the paintwork incorrect on 4 occasions.

Truly a hateful car, probably the worst new car i have ever driven... For the price they are atrocious

you're comparing two completely different generations of car. One is from the analogue era and one of the great all round packages - the other is a much more modern motor with a belter of an engine. Yes it's heavier and bigger but you get mod cons like adjustable suspension, plus other toys and modern infotainment system. Really depends what you value and what you want. Don't step into an E93 expecting it to be as raw as a 2 seater sports car from a previous generation. But if you want a stonking V8 which is so rewarding to rev out on a B road then go for it.

As for reliability - the S54 isn't exactly the most reliable engine ever made. head gasket, vanos hub tab etc etc. however there are many S54s still on original head gaskets.

look at the classifieds and how many E9x M3s are there driving around with 70-100k miles still on the original bearings - lots. As for actuators - well it's a £700 fix. Same as an inspection ii on the S54.

The E9x M3 is a weird car..

Feel heavy and ponderous and feels 200bhp most of the time, unless you thrash it to death, then it breaks.
What shocked me when I first got mine was how sluggish low down it felt(not helped by the fact I'd had a E90 330d previously). It just didn't seem to have any torque in comparison...but I guess that it is unfair to compare a forced induction engine to a NA engine though.

I loved the E92 M3 on the test drive...but I quickly went off it using it as my daily. The specialness of it wore off almost immediately, and the engines characteristics just didn't suit my commute and I just got frustrated with it. Plus when I was sat in traffic it didn't feel any different to the 330d.

I'm glad I tried one but I wouldn't recommend one as a daily...but I would definitely entertain the Convertible as an occasional/weekend car though.

I think E93 M3 is a decent option if you have a young family. Pretty good rear space and boot with option to hoon on your own when the chance arises.

This is what i meant, but you put it a lot better than me..

I don’t understand how anyone driving around in an s54 can complain about lack of torque in the s65! The s54 feels so sluggish low down and only comes alive around 5-6k rpm. At least in the low revs in the s65 you still have the rumble of the v8!

I’ve had 2 m54 engines cars 2.2 & 3.0, a 330d which is epic low down and have an e46 m3 and e92 and the e46 M3 is by far the worse car low down in the revs!

I think its just the way it produces power....

There is a lack of torque too..

When its compared to it rivals of the day (RS4 and C63) then it just seems lacking where they arent.

BTW,Im no S54 fan but it does the job fine in smaller cars.
