Thinking of buying an rs4 saloon(b7)in the new year,as i need some more seats, has anyone switched from a Z4m?or gone the other way?

Be sure to warranty it , these things are notorious for ripping mammoth chunks from your wallet at regular interval's  only for the brave or the clued up as they get older & leggy but WoW to the noise & the capacity for motion

Mr Wilks, I see you had a a 645 with some problems, I've got a real lust for one and would appreciate your opinion, would you have another?

Yes most definitely the best all rounder ive owned .
For £10k (3yrs ago) the gadgets + kit, noise, torque, comfort, cabin , V8 just had it all , unfortunately mine was a 54 / 66k car & suffered a category of what i would class as component failure which for that level of car i found hard to stomach  my indy reckon's the " facelift "07 onwards cars are a different game so would have to be one of those if i did buy again

Yes, another forum member just bought one of those (645). Major failure within a couple of days or buying it (54 plate). The expansion tank exploded, denting the bonnet as well, fan needs replacing.

Brave car to own.

Another +1 for the B7 RS4. I have regularly considered what would be next after the Zed. Trouble is that I have owned a b7 A4 in the past. The build quality is fantastic on them. there are some common faults to look out for (I am sure a quick google search will present a buyers guide or someone who has bought one). Low milers are holding their values well. If you get one from an Audi dealer with warranty expect to pay a premium. As with many modern engines they also drink a little bit of oil at varying rates....so something to watch out for.

Oh yeah - if you need the need the space the boot is brilliant!!

Would have to be a sepang blue estate...

I'd actually just be too scared to leave it parked outside at any point in time given the demand for their seats are stupid.

is there any warranty available on these like we do via Mondial?
I have always been a fan..

I went the other way (sort of). I switched from this S8 (D3 shape for those in the know) to my E85 in the summer as I've never owned a convertible before...

Completely different car to a Z4 in every way of course, but I've driven the B7 RS4 a fair bit and love the look of them, very masculine with it's stance and flared wheelarches and the quattro system is simply unbeatable! In snow you will just sail past any 4x4 which is struggling. I even managed to pull a DHL van out of a ditch a couple of Christmases ago. But any twitch of your foot and you are pinned back in the Recaro seats and the noise is addictive. And that thunderous sound when you accelerate makes you tingle.

Are you thinking of the RS4 in addition to the Z4M or replacing it?

Would the BMW M3/M5 not be an option then? Might be closer to what you are used to in the Z4M?

Yep i had the cooling fan go , £440 the cheapest i could source new , also had timing chain gaskets weeping & cam cover gaskets (engine lowered to get to those £180 for gaskets/£350 labour) auto box housing split (£300) alternator goosed which in turn knackered the new battery i fitted (£450 ) & i was "lucky" apparently as no sign of electrical gremlins which they are also plagued with , it was actually my Indy's advice to shift it & look at buying a Zcoupe  at which point i had never even seen one & the rest is history

On of my close friends has a real thing for them and has owned 3 B7 RS4s (2 saloons and 1 avant). He's not had a single thing go wrong with any of them and a standard service cost the same as a bog standard A4 rep mobile from the main dealer in Glasgow (big service is about £1k). However, I do remember him getting 1 scary bill for new discs and pads on the avant so i guess RS4 specific parts are pricey

Compared to M3s and M5s of the same year they have fewer potential problems. DRC suspension is an issue on anything Audi fitted it to. You can just replace the whole lot with Koni's or something for about £1k. Timing chain rattle is a thing, most rattle for a second on start up, if it goes on longer worry. Trouble is the tensioner is made of plastic and falls apart due to slack until the oil pressure builds up. It can be upgraded but it's an engine out job so scary price. Expect to average either side of 20mpg.

My next door neighbour had a main dealer supplied £30k car ,56 plate around 30k , in 10months it was away from him around 6 weeks total as they had to shuttle it South for much of the repairs as no main agent in Lancs could fettle it , he sold it with 1 month warranty remaining & said it had around £14k of warranty work done in his ownership
A local business contact i use also had one similar age that mirrored the above , can't all be the same but would worry me to the point of paranoia :(

I had a play with a B7 RS4 in my old Cerbera and it impressed me very much and I have always lusted after one ever since...although I have read a few posts of owners really wanting one but then when they had one they were left a little disappointed by it, I would still like to try one though. :driving:

Corrected that for you Lee ... :P

Thanks for the replies fellas.
Im gonna be replacing the z4m unfortunately, was gonna keep it,but I just cant see me driving it that much when the rs4 arrives, plus cost is always an issue.
Will be test driving some over the Christmas period,if I can find any in the local(ish) area.
Have been doing my research over on the rs246 forum,& will be buying a forum car I expect, lots of things to look out for,as with any car I suppose, drc suspension, vac leaks, engine needing a clean/decoke,apparently most of them suffer from this, meaning much lower power output from the glorious 4.2 v8.
Ideally would like one with an mrc stage 2 map & miltek exhaust, but I'll be paying a premium for one in that spec.
Prices seem a bit here & there, but I reckon £18k-£20k should bag me a good one.
