z4m sprint championship on going times/progression..

I think sprinting is a really great way of measuring your driver ability too, we could run a league :D

To be honest, i'd probably go budget semi-slick. cheaper than burning through PSS im sure! How do you find the AP kit on the road, any noise/squeeks.. extra dust? trying to think of downsides.

Oh and christ - that R500 shifts! I definitely think some time spent there would make you much more confident when it comes to bigger tracks. Really pushed it on the final lap too, Nice.

loving the Landy v8 doing a track day. Was that just one of the organisers having fun or a competitor?

Not sure I agree with your logic for the roof. :?

His TVR broke down so he used the tow car, the tuscan steering rack epic failed!

Lovin it, bet it sounded epic too.

Did a driver instruction day at prodrive, a few years ago. One guy failed the noise regs, on has viper exhaused. He spent the day in his Shogun tow car, rather than waste £400 quid.

They Make a scary sight, on a skid pan.

And on the weight theory?? yeahhh i agree to a certain degree and have always believed the same, but i think the 2 tonne GTR kinda blows out the argument/ laws of physics alittle! The guy posted that time in bone stock GTR on stock run flats, i have no doubt with proper tyres and a big brave lunge he'd nail a 1.22.. no doubt at all, it made it look effortless.. ...

Ah but a GTR has got a couple of aces up it's sleeve that no matter how much you wring out of the Z4 you'll struggle to keep up with - 4WD being one and a very sophisticated electronics system keeping everything in check being the other.

Having had the skin off my hardtop for repainting and seeing how it's metal frame is braced together and its mounting points for the car and how they lock into the mounting points.... Their is no one on this forum (unless they are an engineer) that can convince me that it won't a) have an impact on rigidity of the car however small it may be, and b) have an aerodynamic benefit with the spoiler on top.... Hell even the PDF for it says their is an aerodynamic benefit ....

With how this is clamped in place , and where it's clamped it WILL be twisting with the chassis .. BTW are you aware Porsche have 2 figures for rigidity for the boxster? one with the hardtop in place and one without.

I'd love someone with an engineering back ground to pop in and give some actual facts.
Where's Jon ???

interesting for sure either way.

Well I did a bit of digging and found an interesting article.

http://www.sportmotive.com/evochassis.html

However the MR is pretty stiff to start with. By any car standards. 14,500 Nm/deg Stiffer than an 360 for example.

Plus having a small chid above your head, in the car, has to slow the acceleration and increase the roll in the corners. So I'm still not conviced. Where's that engineer. :D

It's also possible that the addition of the roof gives Byron greater confidence to drive harder with the belief that the roof offers him some protection if the car were to leave the track, and from what he says, I think that might well be part of the story. I know that I certainly wouldn't have the same confidence driving a MR like I do my MCs. Yes, he should've got a MC! :poke:

If Byron keeps the hard-top on the car permanently, then how about removing all the soft-top parts to get some weight loss to counteract the weight of the hard-top?

The old adage: "To go faster add lightness".

Was also thinking this. It can be quite interesting at high speed, with the roof down. I've never done a track day, with the roof up, so I can't compare it.

I can say that there is a lot less distraction, due to buffeting , on a track, at 140mph, wearing a full face helmet. Than on a road doing a similar speed, with no helmet.

What about removing the hard top and the soft top and the passenger seat. :) Any one care to guess what that lot weights?

If the hard top is really 65kg, then about 120-130kg total. Getting on for a 10% weight saving.

weight is weight my friend!! the GTR defies it!!

65kg??

if this weights more than 30kg id be shocked!!

I've ametur boxed for many many years and train 6 times a week to this day, so i pick up heavy weights everyday, that top does NOT weight 65kg.. not a chance in hell.

65kg for a hardtop....feck is it made of lead?
Sounds like a great day Byron! Get those carbon seats ordered

turned into a really interesting thread btw....

removing the soft top is you guys taking things wayyyyyyy to far lol!!!

The car is performing very well, I'm back in 3 weeks so, that'll be my second bash at the new layout, the tyre supplier has also offered me 50% off my next order due to the fuckup..... so i'll burn through these tyres, and move to the track compound.

my seats will be swapped out at the end of the season, thats a huge chunk of weight to drop however, i just don't want to do it know as it seems it CAN cause issues, id rather do that when the car isn't in use and use winter to trouble shoot.

Lastly i need to brake deeper and carry more speed in the corners, both definitely lacked that day, i just didn't feel confident to push any further, for a first go... I'm happy.

that figure seems to be doubling each time we look, Real oem states 35kg..... :-)

Wow this thread moves too fast!

I'd say 35kg is about right. I reckon I could notice the difference between having the hardtop on/off in my old 3.0i roady. It just felt a little more willing with the hardtop off

Lol, hence why I said "really" - I thought I'd read that weight in this thread, however, looking back I see it was 68 lbs not kg.

The new Courborogh layout does offer some better choices as the old 2 lap clockwise route was over far to fast to be honest. The WSCC used to run a sprint here, possibly still do, that i used to commentate on for them, and some of the special westies were very very quick. Supercharged S2000 lumps in a purpose built westfield for example. Glad you enjoyed the thrill, try hill climbing as well, as that is quite a buzz.

Tyres wise, and this may be no use to you what so ever due to wheel size, but we used to run used wets and slicks from the formula renault chaps, about £15 a corner with plenty of life in them for a track day for us near mortals. Just a thought if there is a race team with your size wheels close by?

For truly mental sprinting, watch this for balls and confidence.

What are your times like against the r500's on bigger tracks ?.

Mucho money can be spent getting that 1 second off. Better off focusing on smiles ;-).

i promise, no chasing times.... never have done and never will, I'm just enjoying putting the car to work, for a first attempt i was very pleased, a simple tyre change and swallow of the bravery pill is where my time loss will come from.

I've never really come across an r500 before to be honest and never tried to enter into a battle against one, ones a racing car and ones a highly modified road vehicle that can still be enjoyed with "some" comfort left.

one thing i can say..... i never need to focus on the smiles, this car has provided countless smiles, its been a blast. However i will openly admit, if my financial position was alittle different right now id have moved on i think, business is tough so I'm making sure any large spends are sensible and measured and a new track type car to run around in on the summer days definitely is neither of those

Hi mark, I've run the car up shelsly before and that felt rather insane , their appeared to be a large drop right in the middle of the track that caused my arse hole to pucker!
