Z4M or 3.0 si?

Ill be getting a top up loan of around 9k.

Im happy to do the hard sell when i test drive it and put the deposit down there and then.

The M is going to cost me £20pm more in tax, £30pm in petrol, £30pm in insurance. Probably be able to find a car thats a bit older than the 3.0si for the same money - 27-28k ish.

I do think the M would keep its value better but when you take into consideration the fuel/ins/tax/servicing costs are more its probably overkill for what i need. I only drive it at the weekends see!

OK, ive decided to go for the 3.0si coupe.

Theres a 57 plate with 3k miles on it in nottingham for £28750. Im going to approach a local dealer this week to see if they can get the car up from nottingham (i dont want to travel there) if i agree to buy it. They have a car near me i can test drive but its the wrong colour. So guys - what should i be paying for this car? Its got sat nav, red leather, 108's on it. I dont think an 8month old coupe is worth 29k though?

More like £26-27k? What price should i go for? Im not paying silly money only to have it depreciate like a rock.

Ideas?
You don't need to go through the local dealer, I've bought my last two cars without seeing them, and had them delivered to my house instead.

One thing to bear in mind - even though the car has already depreciated a lot, don't think it's over - it has still got a fair way to go over the next few years. At 2 years old you'll get £18k for it tops, so losing £10-11k in 16 months, obviously this will even out a bit more if you keep it for longer, but expensive nonetheless.

I know i dont need to go through the local dealer but the garage the car is at is 70 miles away! I need a test drive too. So thought i might as well get the local dealer to test their demo car (not the one i want) and then get them to bring up the car from the other dealer... if they do that.

They will try and get the other car to sell to you but they won't be over keen as there's not a lot, if any, room for a profit for them. That and the fact that you will struggle to get any discount doing it that way. My advice is to leave the local dealership out of the equation altogether and deal with the selling dealer only. I agree with Mike, be prepared to buy the car from anywhere in the UK and you will get a better deal, the cars are much more keenly priced in England particularly in the south. My last 2 BMW's have come from Yeovil and Bristol. I collected my M3 from Yeovil but the Z4M was delivered to my house from Bristol and they picked up the M3 as part exchange.

dgm I have heard similar, particuarly Aberdeen way? Apparently M3s fetch alot more up there thanks to the oil rig lads?

I did what you did, I.e. test drove locally, but then searched nationally. As above, the local dealer can source other cars in the AU network, but you may not get the best deal. In my experience some (and I stress not all) tend to hope you aren't to clued up and don't do your homework. SOME take the p***. Example....

I was looking at a 335 Sport Manual and my dealer 'found' the only one in the network. I found it too in minutes on the AUC website the day before. The pushy salesman gave a price, and I asked if it was the same one I had found. He said no, this was 'special' and 'only dealers can see it'. He then phoned back ten minutes later to say the car was now reserved and I could only buy it through him anyway, so was I ready to give a deposit. I said forget it, because I knew for a fact he had only put on what was called a 24 hour hold, and I could get the car direct from the dealer that had it for £1k less....didn't buy a 335 in the end as you can see, but wouldn't deal with that guy again, but I see he no longer works there LOL

If i phoned the dealer miles away from me should i barter on teh phone with them? I mean i just dont want to travel 70 miles if they arent going to discount etc.... and i wouldnt expect them to do it over the phone...

?

You can barter with them over the phone no problem and, depending on how long they've had the car in stock, you may be surprised at the deal you can engineer. If they want to sell the car then they should be happy to negotiate on the phone, I've done it myself and have heard of many others doing so as well.

Same here, last three BMs I have collected after doing a deal on the phone.
