yes when your engine vibrates the f**k out of the car or..... crawl underneath and do a detailed visual..... worth it imo!!!

My engine has started vibrating the f**k out my car at idle and low revs, it's a really deep throbbing rumble, and with the bonnet up I can feel that it's just not right... So I think I have this problem :(

Gonna see if I can have it booked in to my indie early next week for a looksee. Sadly I don't have the toys to get the car up for a visual inspection of my own.... Which is currently doing my nut in TBH :headbang:

What mileage are you at Bing.? Hope it's just the mounts and you get it all sorted.

It just ticked over 50k on Monday, so barely broken in :D

The car is booked in on Monday for my indie to take a look. No idea when I'll be able to pick it up though.

Hopefully it's not had time to do any damage beedub, but we'll see. I guess I shouldn't drive it this weekend either :-(

Right then, an update. As suspected, driver side bolt failure. One not present, another sheared but still in place, and another with half not present, the other half sheared flush with the block. So the engine is supported by one bolt on the driver side, and it's sitting on the ARB. No damage to the ARB. The car is sitting with the engine supported on a jack to relieve stress in their workshop. The mechanic said it was lucky I know my car so well and brought it in, as if the other bolt had failed something catastrophic could have happened

I have asked them to take some photos if they remember, though TBH I'm more concerned about the car being fixed.

Because of the stress on the gearbox and other engine mount bolts he's going to replace them all, and probably put new OEM mounts in too whilst they're in there. Happy with that as I want to feel the car stock when sorted before buggering about with anything else.

I've no idea how much it will cost yet, mainly because they don't know if they can get square on to the bolt sheared in the block yet. If they can't they will have to drop the engine and transmission out to sort it. Just saying that makes me wince. I've not even thought about the 'I told you so and you told me everything was fine' conversation yet, as it's possible the bolts looked fine the last time they looked. Though he did say it was exactly what I expected.

On the plus side, it's been caught in time and can be fixed.

Don't forget that this car has not been abused either - yes it's been driven hard a lot of it's life as a pleasure car, which is probably a contributory factor, but it's never been tracked or crashed and is always warmed properly... Yet this has happened. Definitely something for everyone to check.

I'll let you all know how things go over the next few days.

tell the to check the ARB mounts too.... the engine weight could easily cause damage to that area or crack the weak mounting lugs ( they crack and pull out with a thicker ARB) especially with the vibration, hope this isn't too painful cost wise.. like said... seems like all of us old timers have had some rough luck recently :-(

At least it happened now. Not much consolation I know.

I ordered one of these a few days ago, checking the mounts is going to be my first job

Those bolts look very small considering the loads going through them ,and due to their size can only be set to a low torque. :headbang: .BMW should be made to cover the cost of repairs and issue a recall as it is a safety issue.

Mines going in to bmw for an MOT next week, think I will get them to check.

You need get it up on a ramp and take the undertray off to see them, you can't just visually check them from the top. And I had asked for them to be checked before when the car was making a clunking noise over rough road surfaces and was told they were fine...

As srhutch says, just as well it happened now and was caught early... Rather than when hooning season starts. In a way I'm glad it's this, and not some weird unidentifiable problem. Also, I know that nothing I have done has caused it, it's a 'design feature'

Gonna pit a halt to my wheel refurb plans for a bit though :(

Hopefully this will be the cause of the other noise that you couldn't find. If so might act as premature warning for others.

Mines in at BMW being lowered and decatted

And thanks to post they're going to check all mine and all suspension:)

Ta for heads up

Let's hope they check them properly - my guys claimed to have checked them about 4 months ago, and the were all fine apparently. Not sure they checked the correct bolts...

Hope it all goes well

If they need to change them then they'll be OEM for now DPG, but that's because anything else will feel different to stock and I want to feel it back to normal, if that makes sense. I think they are £60-80 for two after a quick check online. No idea of the rough cost of the whole job yet - I'm still waiting to get an update today...

No chance!!
Whilst I do have stands and a jack, it needs a ramp and one of then tall jack things - forget what they're called (transmission jack?) - too difficult for me. Got it done, along with the preventative vanos overhaul, at Insp 2 in January. They are nice and shiny aren't they?! Proper fistful of metal and massively different from the big block of rubber that comes as standard. Small money imo for peace of mind.
