z4m crash....

Just looks like he turned in too much rather the letting it run to the outside. It is a slightly disconcerting corner that one, I'm never really happy I've got it right. Though most people crash at the next one due to turning in too early.

In days of old (80s) I would be sideways all of the time in my Mk2 Escort, I was pretty good at it and confident to drift around roundabouts etc.

However lack of practice and in cars such as my Z4M having so much grip I dare not these days turn off the clever stability control.

Did some rally driving last month in a Sierra Cosworth, was great to be in control of overstear; got back in the Z4M and... Left the stability on!! It was tempting.

Maybe this chap was someone who turned it off for the first time, without practice it was only going to end in tears???

It isn't too uncommon a sight at the 'Ring, but always sad to see a fellow Z in the barriers. Pretty standard sadly for the Carfreitag crowd to cheer the car's demise.

If you watch the video a few times you can see the back is already starting to come around as he leaves the apex... too much throttle and didn't catch the slide early enough (and then didn't wind off the lock fast enough).

Interesting whether he had DSC on or not. I always turn it off on track. Far better to respect the performance of the car and stay finely tuned to what the chassis is telling you than just rely on a computer to sort out your hamfisted attempts IMO.

Here's a similar one from last weekend when we were there, watching at Brünnchen.

Although it looks like he's spun up on some freshly-painted graffiti (wasn't there the day before).

I'm not worried about the entry, but I always feel I've braked too hard, or turned in too early on the exit and compromised my speed for the climb into Eiskurve and Pflantzgarten.

Here's another 'nearly' crash from a Z4M...(10 seconds in)...

50,000 Euro excess if you crash it though!

Oops. Overcorrected and then tried to power out of it ? Not a great way to end up your 'ring trip that's for sure...
Wet track = keep the speed on the ring down… It can be really slippery in some corners. We don't know the exact tyres and suspension on this red Z4M. I know this car (seen it before on the ring)…it's a stripped to metal track day Z4M… so; I'm guessing semi slick tyres and a tuned suspension.

Although it's not just the damp, greasy, or wet days that catch people out. Here's vidcap from last weekend...
When I was there last year, an Aston Martin had a big smash at Mutkurve in the dry. Ouch! I'd rather drive within my limits and drive 500 miles home. I experienced bearing shell failure there in my Z3MC and had to get the car transported home and that was bad enough with the silver lining that I got a brand new engine FOC from BMW.
What does FOC mean?

Probably not the car for a first lap anyway ... though my first driven lap was in my 993 Carrera. Actually it was my first lap on *any* circuit ... ;)
