I need to select 2 options.

  1. Yes, as they failed @ 140k miles (on that engine, previous engine was replaced @ 23k miles under warranty, and I’ve had the car since 9k miles)
  2. Preventatively on the replacement 40k mile engine

I need to share the Triggers M Coupe title with you - albeit mine just for the engine
My roof and stubby are original :P

@PDJ that's a very smart setup - have you got any more pics, and how did you find the install - fairly easy? I assume you diy'd it?

Which bit
If it is just the gauge
Remove centre vent blank off I used a bit of carbon glued in place
The gauge tapping into the oil gallery on the engine (don't think I have a picture) but It goes in at the same point as the oil sender piggy back with an adaptor nylon pipe just runs into the car behind the dash.
Made a plate to mount the gauges oil press water temp and a time clock

Well it didn't take long to spot the flaw - I'll try to tweak it.

Where is Poll King Marlon when you need him? Even if he is driving a Porker!

I will bung a thread up once I've had the assessment and decided the route forward, I'm sure it'll be of interest to some, and it'll give me an outlet too I guess  heyho!

Definitely do Ed, always interested in the mechanical side of things. Be interesting to see if James finds something out of the ordinary that caused it what with the low mileage between the bearing changes.
Best of luck with the news next week, hopefully as you caught it quickly then it'll be not too bad at all.

Ideally if you have any more pics of the take off point - and routing of the feed to the guage into the car. Did you go for the mechanical kit or the digital one? I wss just looking at them on ebay. Keen to avoid losing the vents so will probably sort out a mounting hole in the dash somewhere - will see!

@Andy cheers will definitely update once I know more! Reading back at the bmw receipts it does appear they tried a few different bearings - I do wonder if they put the wrong ones in by accident.... Who knows - we'll see what James finds - everything crossed in the meantime!!

PS if someone would be so kind as to purchase my wife's M135i, I would be forever indebted to them - all proceeds to the engine fund

Mechanical as the stack sender units fail
Pipe just runs Under the throttle bodies and through the bulkhead near the steering column
I would have to remove the plenum chamber to get a picture if I don't find one
Picture shows the water temp sender

Used one of these to tap into the oil system https://www.competitionsupplies.com/aps-oil-pressure-tee-pieces

I purchased my MC early June and had it booked in imminently to get the bearings changed as a precautionary measure. My car was on 77k when I had the bearings changed.

A big thank you to e40sht from m3 cutters who did the work for me, he is an ex BMW Park Lane technician who is very thorough and knowledgeable.

Mine were changed at 104k and showed similar pitting in the bearing surface but upper bearings 4 & 6 were much worse with chunks of copper missing. Changed after oil analysis showed high copper levels. Car was used as a daily drive for 6 years covering 15K/annum sticking to the BMW service interval which arguably is too long. Now a weekend car with the occasional trackday and frequent oil analysis to monitor bearing wear.

Some copper wear there.

Looks like you did them in good time.

What garage does e40sht work for?

What bearings are people putting back in

I used King Racing Bearings these can be fitted either way round the BMW ones have a top and bottom half and come colour coded so you get them the right way round, they made the top half tougher, the King bearings are tougher top and bottom.

As an engineer that has worked on power station and other big plants oil analysis is good when you run the oil for a long time (years) and trend the condition off the back of the reports and then treat the oil

But when you are changing the oil every 6 months and know the bearings are due around 80,000 miles I saved my money and just changed them

I have done almost all of the work myself so known what has been done (kept a record as well).

As has been said already if you are going to keep the car and drive to the full just change them job done.

Also remember the oil relief valve two way to make sure it is up to the job fit a new oil pump as it is part of the pump, or fit as I did an external relief valve and either way fit an oil pressure gauge

Here's how mine looked after ~55K miles. Most are seeing similar wear at about similar mileage (under 60K miles). See this if you want to read more details about oil analysis and additives => https://www.zpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1461006&highlight=oil+analysis

We have a Z4M roadster in this coming week Iain for preventative rod bearings, engine mounts and valve clearances which is on 74k miles so will be interesting to see the condition of those. We also have another booked with 53k next month. Both going for ACL bearings and standard bolts.

Thanks Ross, I'd be very interested to see what the bearings out of the 74K miler look like - seeing as mine is now on 77K!

My MC is on 53K and they haven’t been changed, I bet I don’t do 2K miles/ year so will be a while before I get to the 80K mark, my MR was on 48K and they haven’t been done on that either

Why is 80K the magic mark? Look at mine at 55K

Lots of pictures of shells, none of them look too bad at all, the wear shows they have been doing the job they were designed for.
I would be more interested in any comments on shaft / journal condition, surely of more importance?

Discuss........

Likewise. Just over 50k and doing 2k a year. Indy suggested doing them around 70k.

I get oil analysis every 2 years/4K so I think that’s my plan unless the oil analysis says otherwise.
