Z4M Coupe and 1 Series M Coupe - Road Test Figures Added

I personally would have done the opposite and go from Coupe to Roadster as you get much much more from the 3.2l Straight Six. I had similar problems making up my mind for the Z4M and am absolutely relieved now that I made the choice for the Z4MR and now i drop the top at almost any opportunity even during the winter (just switch on heated seats and heating). Having nothing between you and the aural viscera from the bonnet and exhaust elevates the driving experience in the Z4M to a whole different level. you really get addicted to driving the car and rev range becomes a musical keyboard.

as for looks, the coupe probably gets the thumbs up with the roof-up on the roadster but with the roof down, not a lot of cars get close to the Z4MR.

On the 1 M Coupe, its probably going to be a great handling car and so on, but I think it lacks a crucial ingredient which characterizes all the previous M cars and that is a "charismatic engine". I haven't test driven the car but was let into a sneak preview at Stephen James last week and find everything great about the car until i started the engine up. Its quite a lack-lustre experience as it sounded no different from the 135i apart from a slightly louder exhaust and there is literally no engine note to speak of other than the faint turbo shish..... You immediately noticed that the exhaust volume is tuned up to compensate for the lack of theatre from the engine. mind you, i actually think the exhaust sounded a tad "noisy" after a while but it might be due to the car being parked in a warehouse. The sales manager who had one on order keep saying he is going to put a straight pipe in first thing when he gets his car and i think that suggests something. Overall though, the car is absolutely stunning in metal especially in white and there is definitely 100% no mistaking it for a regular M sport 1 series with those angry wheel arches, bumpers and those gorgeous rims. Am waiting for the invite to go for a test drive soon and hopefully, everything else good about the car compensates for that lazy engine.

Great edition this month.

Really, with the coupe vs. roadster nonsense am I the only one who is tired of every thread degenerating into this pointless yawnfest

I must admit that since I've been on this forum, I'm lusting after a convertible, especially in red imola with a Gruppe M intake and a CSL wheels! :D To enjoy that nise must be great.

This will make yu all laugh. My girlfriend HATES my car. She went to a mate's Boxer S last weekend and said it was much better ( as in comfortable) and on that basis suggested that I get a convertible version of mine. When I told her it was unlikely it would be much more confortable than mine and certainly would be noisier she replied: " Oh, I know that, its just that I could puke out of it easier"!

Cause for divorce me thinks. :headbang:

Could someone scan me that article pretty pretty please? I'm not being a cheapskate its just that we don't get it in Frogland.

All this boll### about future classic/investment, it's a sports car FFS, buy it, drive it, wash it , drive it, enjoy it!! If you want an investment get an ISA :)
Indeed; it's sports car and not somethings that holds value like a house. A house is a far more better investment then any car they made in the last 10 years. I don't get it when people say to me; I'm keeping my M3, Aston Martin, 911, etc on low mileage for the future resale value. What's the point of buying such a car if you don't drive it and enjoy it. Also; you only get the return of your investment if you sell the car, otherwise it is only worth it on paper. I will get other cars in the future... But I love the Z4M roadster so much as sun and fun car that I'm probably never going to sell it. For me it's one of the last pure BMW M cars with a natural aspirated engine and it's a keeper.
But who know; if I have a Vantage roadster and a Gallardo spider in my garage...maybe then I would sell the Z4M...? Now back to reality

My girlfriend is used to driving roadsters and loves the Z4M. She drives it more then me... (I don't use the Z when I'm working). She thinks a Boxter is a boring and ordinary car

Yikes that hit a note didn't it.

Wasn't meant to cause anyone any offence.....

Like other's have said, your choice of car is exactly that....your choice!

I'm in no position to worry about future classic status because I'm too busy racking up the miles using her as a daily driver, and having recently tipped over 50k can't see any reason to stop doing so. Still pulls like a train, and is a match for pretty much anything on the road in the 'real world'.

Lucky you! I must have the onlyb German girlfriend who does not like cars  She's from Frankfurt and apparently they look down at anything from Bavaria :x

Interesting. I was wondering if it would look awesome. I have an allocation from BMW leicester (deposit down) but am awaiting the test drive on their demo before I commit and want to see it in the flesh. I can't imagine it to be better looking than my silver Z4mC........ Can it?

As you have said, it probably is a better driving experience, but I doubt it'll be better than my boxster spyder in terms of feel, so looks and presence will be key for me....
You think it has that much visual impact, considering the base model is so ugly?

well, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I won't judge since i also drive a Z4M lol. However, if for comparison's sake, your boxster spyder looks sleek (one of the cars including the M3 CSL and 1 M Coupe which i am considering buying), an aston vantage looked elegant then i would say the 1 M coupe looked muscularly imposing. Imposing in the way its almost offensive but i think it will help clear the fast lane quicker.

no its never going to match the driving feel of the boxster or the Z4M (although i haven;t driven it yet) since the 1 M like the M3 and M5 ain't a clean sheet sports car. You seat higher up for instance and i think one will have to get use to the size coming from a 2 seater. But for something that can seat 4 average size adults, cost less than £40k and produce the kind of performance, then its almost as good as as one's gonna get.

I don't consider the 1 M a proper M car but must admit they've grown on me a bit. I still don't like the mandatory halfords orange stitching in the interior though and feel the interior looks cheapo/hot hatchback, but these arriving on the back of the lorry look pretty hot, the exterior anyway! Looks great in all three colours.

It's not mandatory mate, it's a no-cost extra according to the BMW.co.uk configurator.

Tried that and can't seem to remove it. It's not highlighted on the Interior Upholstery tab but if you go to the Trims tab it's already selected and if you try to deselect it you get an error stating that it's standard equipment.YOu usually have to select something on each of the tabs so even the orange upholstery I think is standard, if it isn't, then the orange on the rest of the trim is.
I suppose if one walked into a dealer with the ££££ and demanded pure black upholstery and trim it probably can be done.

You're right, i saw it on the first tab and thought that was it.

In any case i like it. Lifts up the interior ambience a bit. Dont like an all-black interior.

In the artlcile it suggested those that want to keep their Z4M for the long term should consider sealing/proofing it (can't remember exactly). Has anyone done this and/or know what it entails. I plan to keep mine for the long haul and is a daily drive come rain or shine (or snow and salt).

sealing/proofing it
What do they mean with this?
The article was referring to people who plan to keep the car long-term. They recommend rust-proofing to prevent surface corrosion and corroded underside pipes, which the older Z3 suffer from. HTH

Just thought I'd mention: this article was recently re-released in the US on Edmund's Insideline web site: http://www.insideline.com/bmw/1-series/bmw-1-series-m-coupe-genesis-and-evolution.html

But the Z4M is cut from a different cloth to the Popeye muscles of either the E46 M3 that was on sale at a similar time, or today's E92 M3 and 1 Series M. It looks fantastic: the best, we reckon, of all the controversial Chris Bangle designs. Just be sure to get the hardtop.
