Z4M 1500ft, 5am and pretty icy! ;)

Got up at 5am this morning to go over to Coniston, to what I hoped was going to be a fantastic sunrise to get some pics etc. Everyday has given a fantastic sunrise this week, with frozen fog, mist and lots of snow. But on my day off it was not to be... and the weather was very grey with not much colour. So ended up bailing at about 8.30am.

Anyway to get to Coniston Water from Penrith you either go all the way to Keswick then back on yourself toward Ambleside and Windermere. Or you can follow Lake Ulswater and go over Kirkston Pass, it is the Lake District's highest pass, has a gradient of 1 in 4 and is at an altitude of 1,489 feet (454 m). It was about -8 last night and it is pretty inhospitable in bad weather. We call it the struggle ;)

But thought bugger it and took the Z4Mc and had a good slip slide all the way up, was great fun. On the way back was disappointed with my lack of photographs so thought id stop and take a few pics for you fellow Zd'ers.

Loving those car pics  Youre a lucky man living so close to that scenery and selection of roads.

fantastic pics tom! colour of your motor really suits the background and all! what settings do you use when taking the likes of the photos with your motor in them or is it a photoshop jobbie? just intrested

great pictures... your skills with a camera are amazing... i'll have to get some pointers off you!

You have snow tyres?

Also how is your car so clean after driving in those conditions?!

Tom, once again amazing pictures. Very impressed.

Secondly, done that road a couple of times myself, it's epic, and god knows it's probably one to get the heart racing in the ice!

Thirdly, slightly off topic, I'm almost set on ordering that spoiler, for the bargain price of £280 :).

:D .

Very Brave .... but the photos are stunning. we are in the lakes quite a lot and the struggle is certainly some road .

Photo 3 or 4 wins Photocomp for me this month :!:

Have you adjusted the colour/lighting for the last two or is that how they looked?

Apart from a contrast & saturation adjustment its as it was out of the camera. I used a Polariser with an ND grad filter to produce the accentuate colour. Means when the sun rising & is bright the ND grad will reduce it by 3 stops so it gives a longer exposure for the top third of the frame allowing foreground to have and extra 2 stops. so the foreground and background have an even exposure. Means you don't have to shoot too exposures and put them together in PS, the amateur way ;). Also with the warm sunrise with the ND grad and polariser produces the fluorescent colour cast which is what I was after. If would have been better if the sunrise was more intense, but you have to work around the conditions.

I am really fortunate makes owning the car much more fun! Getting it out on the roads it was designed for.

Cheers, well I shoot 90% of the time in manual mode and 10% in Aperture priority. Always shoot RAW so if I make a mistake then it is possible to repair it, then just make a good RAW conversion to give a good canvas to work with. I make my own effects and turn them into editable Photoshop actions so I don't have to re-create them over and over. Then apply and edit them to suit the image. I also use a lot of layer masks with layer adjustments to paint in areas I feel need adjustment. Means you have incredible control and then blend the effects together.

No I have some Pilot Sports on these wheels.. really should have put some on but this is the first bit of bad weather we've had so far this winter. I think its the colour of the car... its definitely not clean but the colour doesn't really show dirt!
