Xenon lights. Is that a big job to replace?

  • An OEM set up won't be simple to retro fit, but it is possible. Most expensive option by a lot.
  • You could replace the halogen projectors to aftermarket bi-xenon ones. Less expensive than an OEM set up and the only complication might be wiring to get the bi-xenon shutter to work (high beams).
  • You can just swap the halogen bulb for an LED or HID conversion kit. 5 minutes job and cheap. Worst results, but better than OEM.

Only an OEM set-up would be legal as any other alternative wouldn't have self-levelling or be E-marked.

Are the seats heated? It’s the later engine which my old one definitely wasn’t so maybe it has xenons? It definitely needs finding out and advertising as such if so but I thought only the si got xenon but you never know...do they self level?

Judging by the photos, no heated seats, no xenons.

It’s a lovely looking car and cruise and electric fold in mirrors, later engine all nice additions for sure so it must be time of year and price as looking around 10k should get you a genuine si with heated m seats, and xenons and wbac are quoting 7.5k for the si so if people are using that as a guide they are going to be sceptical spending 10k on an SE private without the two most popular items....I was interested in an SI in a dealers at 10k with heated sports seats, full history, xenons but I’m thinking I’ll wait as i think they have peaked they cannot continue to rise everything has gone abnormally expensive in a short period of time it cannot continue, maybe others think a similar way?

It is an SI, the sport/SE varieties are just trim levels.

Someone who knows more will help you out there as I know there is more options on lighting, and I am presuming it doesn’t have xenons as my se of the same vintage didn’t, you’ll know if it self levels and can actually see in the dark as the xenons are really a good improvement my last sport had them and it was fab at night, even better bulbs don’t help much in non xenon...yes I did try. The seats I quite liked but many want the sport seats but I’m such a slow driver I don’t need holding in.

This car has halogen lights, you can see in the interior pics it has the adjuster wheel for their height

thats how Im thinking , but I certainly could be wrong , I started out wanting a 130i , but they have just about doubled in price in 6 months ,,, now a z4 is nearly the same price ,, well a low price z4 is about the same price as a top ish end 130 , so if the same happens to z4 coupes Ill kick myself if I dont buy one ,,,, its that 20 20 fog again.
Its crystal clear looking forwards , but the mist always seems to lay ahead . I think the price may just stay where it is for a while yet , then along comes summer ,,,, buy now I think.

I think it’s safe to say well looked after good spec E86 SI’s are only going to go up in price. Every car I see advertised is always missing something like heated seats or M-Sport seats when you finally get a car that ticks all the boxes and has the right history they can charge a premium for sure, I purchased a well looked after E86 with a great spec and I still had to spend nearly £1500 sorting that out simply because suspension components were tired they are an old car now unfortunately and need looking after.

Wow quite a few comments about my car.so according to those comments the se trim reduces the price by approx 4K. Same car except possibly xenon lights and sports seats missing. Seems hard to believe but hey ho.
Cards on the table I have been offered £9000 from a dealer against a gr Yaris but can’t collect for two weeks. Was hoping to get more as that is what I paid for it. Unless mine is the only car in the world not to have gone up in price or perhaps I paid too much. All I know is that the more comments the more I am tempted just to keep and enjoy. I get positive comments and stares when I do take it out and have people looking around it when I come back. I even had a couple looking around it whilst at lotus. Maybe I do need to try autotrader or eBay as somebody mentioned. I think everyone here is looking for the same car .
Dam you Chris Harris for your top gear gr Yaris YouTube video ( loved my zed until seeing this)

I think that’s a very strong offer from the dealer and would be sorely tempted to accept it for a no hassle transaction, unless they’re giving a good discount on no trade in. I never got any reduction for no trade in against the G29.

Is it an option to keep the E86 and buy the Yaris? If so I’d do that and either keep the E86 and enjoy :driving: or keep it until a better time of year. This couple of weeks is possibly the worst time to be trying to sell a car privately.

Anyway GLWTS whatever you decide to do

Yes agree mate. Just thought somebody on here would have appreciated a forum car. Don’t have enough space for both.

People always have opinions on value and cars specifications.
I don’t believe you will struggle to sell that car just because it does not have M Sport seats and xenon headlights.

Value wise these cars peaked around August, prices have soften slightly but that’s more down to the time of the year.

I agree with the chap above £9000 is a good trade offer.

I would imagine if you advertise it at £10,000 on Autotrader or EBay at £10,000 you will get offers off £9000-£9,500 it may be worth trading in to avoid possible time wasters and hassle.

That being said some may just turn up and give you the full asking price hassle free, you can never tell with selling 😄

Good luck with the sale 👍

I'd agree with that too based on my experience 2 years ago!

I got a great deal on my MC in December 2019 but had very little interest in my E86 3.0Si for over a month. If I had waited a few more months it would have fetched much more but that wasn't a realistic option.

This is definitely the wrong time of year to be selling any car, unless it is a cheap runner with a long MOT.

Good luck anyway.

In the last 4 years I have sold two coupes for a combined total of 9.5k ...and no not more fool me at all...nobody offered more a car is worth what someone is willing to pay for it no matter what book says what ...I definitely wasn’t helped by certain people on here talking absolute horse that’s for sure, my last sport was sold to someone on here speculating but also able to bring the car up to scratch to sell on for decent profit and why not he earned his money straightforward bloke caught the rattler up to Leeds paid his Money and drove home yes I was a bit sick but I needed a new van so needs must.

The car for sale here is a lovely looking motor and a lot of this chat has arisen from the sellers surprise at it not selling so a bit of feedback is been given and everyone has an opinion to give which can be interpreted as non helpful for a sale as it can be seen as negative by the seller which I totally understand after selling on here myself and been extremely not happy with a couple of people that will remain nameless .....I wish I had gone down a different route with the sale ie eBay, piston heads, auto trader, car and classic....forums are great places to buy from you can get a great deal but selling on a forum can be an absolute nightmare as like on here now we are all openly chatting about plus and minus’s of the car for sale potentially putting people off buying but I see plenty of positives on this thread too and no hiding the fact the car is very nice in the pictures and it’s history....I can only imagine the excitement of moving to a GR Harris

I think most agree it’s a nice car, the two things that go against it selling in my opinion is the time of year, and as far as I am aware it is only advertised on here

EBay classified advert allowing ‘best offers’ is definitely the right way to go if you want to try and maximise return and are prepared to put up with the nonsense that this will entail. You’ll have lots of numpty’s with ‘last price’ etc, but filter them out.

Have to say, I mirror other comments, £9k is a strong dealer offer and if you want the GR and can’t store the E86 I’d be tempted to close that deal.

Personally, Stratus is my favourite colour on the E86 by a country mile but, as others have said, I do think the specification, time of year and limited audience on this forum are holding you back.

Most on here will want MSport seats and will know how hard it is now to find a pair in any colour, let alone a specific colour, for retrofit (and they are circa £1k for properly decent heated/electric ones)…. The general public maybe less so though!

Headlights, not a concern for me at all… I’d suggest the majority of people looking at these now are buying for weekend use and not daily drivers.

Things like lack of phone kit, no MFSW and basic audio might also put forumites off, but again less of an issue possibly for Joe Public.

The other observation I would make is that if you bought 6 months ago, most of the price inflation in the 2nd hand car market had already occurred and typically prices fall at this time of year. If you want out quickly, that dealer offer looks pretty tempting as you’ll basically have enjoyed an E86 for free for six months

Thx for the replies guys.agree with all that has been said. I suppose offers over the £9000 must be worth a look then .

I personally do not see why you could not achieve at least £9500 if not closer to the asking price

True-blue mentioned forumites being put off by the spec. I agree. I think that “enthusiasts” generally, i.e. people with a good knowledge of the Z4, will be much keener to get a top spec car which has been looked after. They will be less worried about mileage and/or modifications because they know the engine is very capable and they know which modifications improve on the original. It is also worth remembering that most forumites have their own Z4s already and are unlikely to want another one unless its an upgrade. I also think this leads to some of the less generous members to talk down lesser cars.

On the other hand, someone who has never owned a Z4C before but appreciates the aesthetic and “just wants one” will be less concerned about spec and more concerned about low mileage, condition and originality. I was in the latter camp when I bought mine. I bought the lowest mileage (50k), lowest owner (1) example I could find at a reasonable price from a dealer. It was only when I joined the forum that I discovered my pride and joy was considered “poverty spec” by forumites. Notwithstanding that, it is still as beautiful as the day I bought it, so I am happy.

My advice to you is therefore:
- you will get a better price advertising this spec of car away from the forum, but be prepared for idiots and tyre kickers. Find out why they want a Z4C before you let them see it.
- 9k is a good offer from a dealer, but be aware they can afford to offer you generous terms if they are off loading a premium priced new car to you at full price. Would you still consider it if they offered you £2k off the new car but only £7k trade in?
- WBAC is the worst place to sell a car like this, it’s simply not their market. The going rate seems to be about 7,500-8,250. You should try some of the sites where dealers bid for your cars. Motorway and Cazoo are worth a try.

Or . . . Keep your beautiful car and appreciate it for the amazing machine that it is.
