Z4 winter project

Hi All,

I had an issue over the christmas period with the engine making a load clattering on startup for about a second before it dissapears. I check the following before turning the issue into a winter project.

Checked:
Vanos
DISA
sparkplugs
water pump
pulleys
ICV
Hydraulic lifters

So in the end after not finding the fault its an engine replacement!!

So now whilst the engine and gearbox are out I'm replacing the following:
Water pump
Thermostat
Hydraulic lifters
Cam chain & tensioner
Timing chain tensioner
Duel mass flywheel
Vanos unit as my original i had recently changed the O rings
Clutch
Exhaust manifolds
block & head (using my cams) paint engine
oil pump nut drilled and wired
sump & gasket
clean engine bay

That's a shame, but after all that TLC it should run better than ever when you have finished!

That's some undertaking! Hope you still have that smile at the end?

Cheeky ask................. what are you doing with the old vanos assembly?
I'm looking to change one on my 3.0i project and it would so much simpler to have one prepped and do a straight swap.

Really?
Just the opposite of what you do really.
He keeps the car and changes the engine.
You keep the engine and change most of the car.

So what was causing the clattering that lead to such radical action?

Looks like you didn't get a picture of my best side Neil

Is the crank scored?
Only took a couple mains off shells on one does have some marks on it but crank looked OK. Big end of the crank for piston 5 has some pickup and wear on it.
