Z4 steering wheel replacement and piano black interior

Hi all! I'm thinking about changing the steering wheel on my '55 2.2iSE - it's pretty thin and puny and even my girlfriend's Fiat 500 has a chunkier feel to it :driving: . Any thoughts on this and where I could source a wider rimmed replacement, preferably OEM BMW or from a dismantled salvage? I've not got cruise or connections to hands-free phone or radio so don't need a wheel with any functions other than for turning!

Also - I'm thinking about retro fitting a piano black interior trim 8) - BMWMstyle provide kits for around £500 - again has anyone done this on the forum or is it a professional job?

Finally - any thoughts on how I could squeeze a little more power out of the 2.2?

The answer to all of this would be to go out and buy a properly specced 3.0 but finances won't permit :( and my 2.2 has done sterling service so I'm trying to get what I want by a little bit of expenditure and some retro-fitting rather than visiting the st(d)ealers and having to rely on finance.

Thanks for your help! :)

Re the steering wheel go for an M non multi function thats what i am going to do its a straight swap and you can buy from the stealers no idea of price but not a fortune.

I have replaced my interior trim with the Carbon leather which I got of ebay for £180 :D

The dashboard trim is easy and done in around 30-60 minutes if you know what you are doing.

The centre console is a different story, as the trim is held in place by 30 screws which can only be removed by removing the entire centre console. It will take at least half a day to do this and the dashboard properly I would say.

The price of £500 seems cheap, I though it would be nearer to £750

Steering wheel to a new non-Multifuntion is very very easy. Adding multi-function should be easy but is casuing me some hassle!

Piano Black trim - would love that, tell us how it goes! I would love the carbon leather too but haven't seen any for a reasonable price!

Most of these trims are rare to find second hand, as most people are normally changing the standard brushed aluminium.

Fox some strange reason the guy thay sold me his changed to Piano Black and wouldnt ship the parts which limited his market, helped me a lot though. :D

Initially I wanted Piano Black but after getting the sun reflection on the Brushed Aluminium thought the Piono Black would be as bad, plus it's easy to scratch, Carbon Leather is best IMO.

Hi Hizza,

I thought the same as you and treated mine to the piano black dash and steering wheel. The centre console section I picked up from US Ebay for about £30 but I had to drill the hole for the sport button. It took ages and even longer to fit as you have to remove the whole centre console. I got tired of searching for the two dash trims on ebay so ordered from my local dealer. These were a couple of quid short of 500 notes, you can negotiate the price, be tough, 10% off is the norm I think.
The wheel was another ebay purchase, easy to fit, even the retrofit wiring for the steering controls was straightforward - something you shouldn't need to worry about with a 55 plate.

Go for it, as long as you have patience and somewhere bright to work, it's all good fun. If you need any advice, feel free to PM me.
