Z4 + Snow

Guys,

snow tires make a huge difference. My Z has the BMW standard Bridgestone Blizzaks. We had some 10 cm of snow on one of mountains here and I drove my Z there, police had blocked the road to the top and redirected everyone onto a small road that was not cleared of snow, with a relatively small gradient and I had no (traction) problems at all. Only prob was that I had to drive with the right a few times off the road in full snow to pass other cars (that is coming from the other directions, I wasnt overtaking the slow ones 8) ) and even then no traction problems (and no DSC/DTC taking over), just my lower spoiler eating snow.

I can definitely recommend the snow tires and am planning on going skiiing with the Z

Cheers

Rudd.....

A686 from the A69 @ Haydon Bridge through Alston/Hartside to Penrith..... what a road!!! Seriously cant wait to get the coupe along that road when off to the lakes over Xmas! Thats if its not snowing

+1 this, also the road from middleton-in-teesdale to alston has got to be one of the finest in the land.

Us northern boys should get together for a drive at somepoint, i know some amazing roads around that area due to biking.

I took my mate up my fav road which is basically from the A66 near barnard castle up the Stang road, he was driving a clio cup, when we stopped at the top his comments were along the lines of 'f###ing hell, i didn't know they made roads that stupid' recomendation indeed.

yeah we should all have a get together! i didnt think there were too many people about from up here....

anyway, snowing today at mine so i thought it might be eventful on the way to work on my nearly bald tyres. not a single drama...apart from when i got into the work carpark and decided there was enough snow and ice to kick the back end out a little :D

it is the first time iv seen the zed with snow on the roof and it made me feel a little guilty for being too lazy to get the cover from the garage........it will be on tonight

Plenty of snow here just now, not usually a problem as long as you plan in advance. Try to park so you do not have a uphill start and take a bit or a run up to any hills and keep your momentum going. Once on the move the stability and traction should keep you going but only if you keep some throttle or brake on, lifting off stops the system being able to divert power or slow a spinning wheel. One press of the traction control button enables the dynamic traction control that will let the wheels slip to keep your momentum going forward instead of cutting the power, useful if you are being careful but once you are moving I would switch it back to normal. Better to have something heavy in the boot (bag of sand can be useful if you need to grit the road where you get stuck too), and reverse up a hill is going to be easier if you are stuck you can roll down. Roof down for added visibility and reverse is the best way to try and get out of trouble if you get stuck. Other than that put it in a higher gear, tickle the throttle and always go slower than you think you can to give you more time to react and avoid other people who think 4x4 give you more grip not more traction.

well snowflakes trying to turn into a blizzard. Reckon I'll be a hockey puck on the way to work today. :driving: If I get too scared I'll invest in some blizzaks.

*edit 2hrs later*
Damn snow stopped. You'll rue the day you crossed me mother nature

Its snowing in Nechells Birmingham :chophead:

Just saw the rolling storm heading our way from Tamworth. And then it was a full blown blizzard

Z4 stays on the drive when snowing! Trouble with driving in snow is it isn't always about the way you drive!! It's the way others drive that can damage your car! :o

Agreed never use my car in the snow see people going by my house still doing around 50 if they can crazy :x to be honest my Z will stay on the drive till after xmas now to many assholes on the road worrying about xmas prezzies etc not wtaching what they are doing had three cars in our family hit on xmas eve and have already seen more than avarage prangs this week.

Handbrake turns , wheel scraps and J turns are a great laugh and really easy in the snow......... Shovel and blanket ?????? What the !!!!!!

In my exprnc the zeds are ok in snow, just be sensible in it,lol
I was driving in havy snow the 1st yr i got it(2007),and wasnt as bad as i thought. So just pull away in 2nd gr,and get inti 3rd/4th asap ,and drive at a steady pace/sensbl speed and you wl be fine.
As lucy said/its not as bad as u wld think/fear

With decent tires they all work fine as long as the driver knows what he or she is doing. I don't drive mine in the winter because of all the sand and gravel on the roads, plus the multitude of idiots driving the other vehicles.

I took a snapshot of our parking lot at work, it doesn't look much worse then the field with the lonely zed in it :D

Happy xmas

I likely have about as much experience as anyone on this board with winter tires on a Z4. This is my 7th winter in a Z4. You do need dedicated winter tires and today's winter tires are really very good. The biggest problem with a Z4 is snow that is much over 10cm in depth. Once the roads are plowed with pack snow and ice remaining a good set of winter tires will get you around just fine especially if you are experienced at winter driving.... :driving:

Snow day at work! Of course the base's roads weren't cleared, so I got to see how much traction those PS2's really did have. After I stopped messing around and started driving sensibly, I realize hockey pucks have about 300% better traction than PS2's in the snow!
So yeah I went really slow and was smart about driving around and didn't have any problems. Well except that one spot where I was dumb and used my brakes instead of letting the engine decelerate me with wheel turned at a roundabout, came within a foot of that SUV. :? So slightly too fast and heavy braking not good :P

We've got a couple of inches here - with drifts on the side of the house of about 12 inches.

Only managed to make one snowman yet though...

I'm supposed to be heading from Slough to Tring to Colchester to Liverpool today

I wonder how many days that's going to take

Well i made it into work in record time today - but then got near work (Bracknell) and it took me double the time due to snow - by eck the Zed is twitchy - even in third!!!

It's amazing what the snow can do... I bet with a light covering Bracknell looks quite picturesque this morning!

I've taken a day off as my family are visiting... well now they're not. So, only reason for me to head out would be recreational! Currently obsessed with other cars skidding down the road... do I venture out for a December Photo Competition shoot and risk one of those dim-wits hitting me? :?
