Hi
i Have a problem with my roof. I pressed the open button the windows go down the roof unlocks moves about 1.2 inch and stops the led then flashes any ideas gratefully received.............

The motor is dead. Happened to me recently exactly the same. I did find someone to replace it for about £600. Sadly thats a good price.

Its a 56 plate only 20k i have an extended warranty, would it be covered?

It's the first time i tried to use it this year!

Give it little shove then, but my guess is its dead. If it's under warranty you should be able to get it fixed, but be ready for BMW to try to wriggle out of it.

Brought it from Big Motoring World not main dealer only had her 9 months grrrr. I'll give the shove a go thank you!! :driving:

as ferrel says it may need some assistance if not used for a while, joints may need lubricating also, but should be covered under warranty.

ferrel - sad but true that £600 isn't the worst out there. Mind if I ask where you got this done?

I have a 2004 and for now the roof is fine although wines a little, but is there anything you can do to prevent the motor failing or at least delay the inevitable somehow ?
can the mechanism be lube'd in anyway ?

cheers

I think having a hardtop for the winter months really does help, as it sits over the channels so that no water will pass by the motor

Would be interesting to see what ratio of members with failed motors don't have a hardtop fitted during the winter period.

The pivot point of the roof behind the seats, don't use WD40 a light cycle chain oil would be better and one not in a can so to reduce any risk of getting oil everywhere.

Three quotes I had to replace motor from independents last week ranged from £450 to £650 all in.

So it's not always as bad as you expect if it is the motor thats gone.

As it's a 56 it's a facelift.... So with the better sealed motor.

When the light flashes it it red or orange?

If orange it could be the boot shelf sensor.... Or maybe even the boot shelf not fully down.... Preventing the roof opening.

The OP says the roof opens an inch or so, so this can't be the issue.

Arghhh!!!!!!!!!!! flashing Orange i think i'll check that too thanks :)

When my roof motor died there was no flashing led. So maybe there is a different perhaps less expensive issue. Have you checked the fuses ? Also I don't know much about it but you might have disturbed the shelf that the roof packs into in the boot,..or maybe that red cord pulpy thingy near where the boot hinges onto the rear if the car.

How on earth did somebody get a quote of 450 for motor and fitting ! The part alone is 300, and anything from 3 to 6 hours labour. Please give us the name....I expect he will be very busy once people try to go top down post winter.

Roof naturally opens (springs open) an inch once released from catches...but not necessarily under power of the motor. So Srutch's suggestion still stands for me.
