Z4 Retrofit - Cruise Control, OBC, Multi-Function Wheel

Hello everyone,

Hope I posted this in the right forum...

I wanted to get a post going along the topic of retro-fitting features to my 2003 Z4 2.5i. I have done quite a bit of searching the various forums on the topic and am yet to find any definitive answer other than for the cruise control which appears is an easy retro-fit.

Cruise Control - I seem to see that for cars with a pre 10/04 build date that installing a cruise control is simply a matter of installing the cruise control stalk and the lower cowl trim piece which will be needed to fit the stalk. Can anyone confirm this to be true? My second question wit regards to cruise is that my dealer quoted me $155 for the stalk and $163 for the cowl trim. Does this sound odd to anyone else that a simple piece of plastic trim costs more than the switch? Could he have been quoting me the wrong part?

Multi-Function Steering wheel controls - From what I have gathered the multi-function wheel can also be retro-fitted. I have found a kit on eBay that comes with all trim, buttons and wires for $299. My dealer says there may be more to it than that but it seems I have read elsewhere that it is pretty straight forward. I actually have located the controls & trim. What I am lacking are part numbers of the three wires that connect everything. One is a small harness. The other two are single wires with pins on the end that you add to the existing radio harness which has empty slots in it. Can anyone give any insight as to what wires are needed? I can get the trim and buttons for around $100 so I could save a lot of money over the 'kit' if I could figure out what those wires are.

OBC - The on board computer also seems to be 'in the car' already and I have read that simply adding the OBC stalk will allow use of the additional functions. Can any confirm this?

I would be VERY appreciative if anyone could provide me with information about how to go about retro-fitting these items in the most cost effective and closest to a plug-n-play as possible.

Thanks for taking the time to read my post! I look forward to being an active user of this forum.

Best Regards,

Drew

My cruise part came with a replacement trim - all under one part number.

That was UK though and I installed it on my 04 2.5i

And yes its a very easy retro fit - maximum of 10 mins

As you can see I am a new member and new owner to my much beloved Z4. I am trying to find my 'place' in the Z4 forum world and I appreciate the quick replies... shows this is a nice active board.

Hopefully we can gain some ground on this Z4 Forum AMW. Sure would be nice to have those features!

Thanks for the reply too Senwar. I read another UK user that mentioned he bought it in 'kit form'. My dealer knew nothing about it and tried suggesting it was far more complicated. I have gathered it will be a direct retrofit and as easy as you say. Now if I could just find the right part numbers it would be 1 retro down, 2 to go. I am NOT paying $163 for a plastic lower cowl though. That seems out of line... Do you have a UK part number or could you possibly help us locate one?

Hopefully others gain continue to give us some input.

As mentioned above, in the UK at least and I'm sure it will be the same in the USA, the kit for cruise includes the cowling.

About £140 as I recall for the lot. You even get the wiring for if its a later (non-M) build car (although this is a lot more tricky).

For Cruise Control ? - for me that p/n was 65710153114, you'll find a picture on realoem.com complete with the new cowling if you search.

The fitting is really easy if you have the loom in place. Flip down the steering wheel adjuster, there are 2 (or maybe one) screws that hold the bottom of the steering cowling in place, then it unclips.

Then plug the loose black (as I recall) plug from your loom into your new cruise control stick, and slide the stick onto the steering wheel column via the rails.

Take your nice new cowling, clip into place, reinsert screws, and clip steering wheel adjuster back up.

I am not a 'modder' in any way, and it took me 10mins in the dark.

Is there anymore info on the OBC? Would be nice to get some more info up if its there hiding away :D

The OBC is very simple, there is a button on the left hand indicator switch that cycles through:

Clock > Outside Temp > Avg MPG > Range Left > Avg MPH.

If you have SatNav you gain a few others like a second trip, but no a lot else.

To be honest I thought all Z4's had the OBC

This has got me interested as i do a lot of motorway driving and it would be great for me, however i have a facelift 2.0, so i don't know if this is different. Why is it it tricky on later cars? :?

we dont have all the wiring on our post facelifts, bit of a bugger otherwise it would have been a no brainer

Does that mean ripping the car apart to get a wiring loom in?

Here are the instructions - looks like a bit of a pain on a facelift car - I'm trying to decide whether to do it myself; I don't like the idea of having to cut wires and all that sort of stuff!
