No stripes on road cars, it's the law. :rtfm:

But seriously, besides being highly subjective, the look can change drastically by fairly small changes in the design. The fact there are endless variations in weight, proportion, color, number, etc. makes it very difficult to determine the 'best' design. You need a good illustrator to try out some variations to have any hope of getting something that will look good. Even then, something on paper or monitor will look quite different at full scale and in 3 dimensions.

My observations on some previous examples in this thread: M color stripes only work on white cars. Stripes are supposed to be bold; quiet, subtle stripes achieve nothing. Center stripes on a Zed don't work because it accentuates the bulbous bonnet that the Zed's designer did a decent job of disguising in the first place. Off center stripes have the same problem, maybe even worse.

I tried to envision what would look good on a track car. It would be something that accentuated the car's character lines. Black or white on a colored car, or color on a monotone car. I had to stop there because my head started to hurt from all the possibilities.

The rear end is a little Shelby Daytona-esque, and I don't completely hate it!

When I bought mine a couple of years ago there was a IL blue coupe with white stripes for sale for less money, but I decided I didn't own enough Argos gold jewellery or cut glass earings to pull it off...

Another ad for an e85 with that non existent option of a sports button that tightens up the suspension. I love car dealers!

I've seen plenty of track-spec Z4s with front splitters, rear diffusers and big spoilers at the back, a racing stripe on them wouldnt look out of place... On an otherwise stock car it looks a bit too much.

Either way if anyone wants to give it a go it's your cars, you can do what you want with them.

Personally i could only have a 'go faster' stripe if first i had done significant engine mods

i think viper stripes should be left to...............oh wait a minute, er vipers!

however i do like what porsche did with the cayman which was a black stripe on a black car, nice and subtle.

Agree with easty, I have black decals on black paint and most of the time I can't see them, but every now and then it looks like the design has been scratched into the paint. Not everyone's idea of cool, but I like it anyway ;)

Sorry to dig up a very old thread here...but I am putting M stripes on my Z4 Coupe (for Le Mans purposes only they will be removed after a week!!).

Anyway - has anybody actually put stripes on their Zed? I am wondering how difficult it will be to do? A colleague is making it sound like rocket science because the Vinyl is curved but I don't think it should be that tricky?

Any experiences please let me know :)

(Also feel free to PM if you have but don't want to confess!!)

Cheers,
Alex

If you're only doing for Le Mans does it really matter if it's not absolutely perfect? :)

This is what I thought - but my colleague (being a bit of a doom merchant) is telling me it will look shite because of the curves and that it needs doing in three sperate stripes, heat guns etc etc

I was just looking for any experiences of somebody who's actually done stripes rather than somebody who just thinks they know the answer (and seemingly is getting kicks out of winding me up...) :headbang:

I wouldn't suggest it! I like it on certain car models (viper and cobra clear examples), but on the Z it might look cheap! Just my humble opinion.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Not sure if you read my original post but it's just for Le Mans and will come off after a week so not too fussed I it looks cheap etc as it isn't a permanent mod! I was just trying to canvass opinion on feasibility.

Thanks anyway :) (but I'm still doing the M stripe!!)

I'd say do it yourself, how hard can it be. Definitely no need for heat guns etc. IMO.

Have you found the stripes already? Presumably you can buy all three colours on one stripe.

Yup!

Dan from Hollographics has been very helpful - he can cut the one into three if needed! I still don't see how it can be that hard?!!

If its no hassle removing, go for it! Just share some pics before you do remove them. :)
