z4 no.10 Carbon black 2.5i

so , catching up to Mr Wilks, but I could even overtake now he's in fancy beetle territory :oops:

This one is a 2008 (58) Late car - a 2.5i Sport in individual Carbonscwarz with traumrot (dream red) leather, I have had the debate about the facelift 2.5i many times now being that they arent that quick, but having had 3 of them now, i know how to get the best out of them, they are certainly no rocket ship, but make a nice noise and it was cheap which is my main criteria when buying any car :P

it has :

Heated seats
MFSW
passenger isofix
brushed ali dash (bleugrh)
standard sport spec so M sport seats, Chunky M wheel, M sport suspension.
MV2 alloys

The car was cheap as it has a few faults, the ones ive descovered so far are;

the reluctor rings on the driveshaft have failed at the rear, meaning the ABS / Traction kicks in at low speeds even under normal driving , due to the bulbous abs rings which have been pushed off the driveshafts by rust - this also activates the 4 dash lights after spirited driving which are ABS , Traction control, handbrake in yellow and flat tyre indicator, this isnt really a big issue for me as i fixed the last z4 coupe i had using a washer in between the sensor and the hub, as is well documented on youtube, isnt a permanent fix, but even taking the reluctor rings off and changing them isnt the worst job, its just a bit labour intensive.

The car makes a weird noise when driving, it sounds like a brake disc after youve just washed the car scoring along, but its constant, doesnt change in pitch or loudness, its just there constantly whilst driving at any speed, think it could be diff related, also, there is a horrendous vibration from anything over 80mph, which gets worse the faster you go, i think it might be the prop donut breaking down as i've had one before which did a simmlar thing - I thought it was odd when i asked the seller whats the car like at speed his response was 'i dont know, ive never been on the motorway in it... he also said that the brakes might be sticking on as i havent used for a while, but then went on to say that he went to get a puncture repaired in it the night before :oops:

The rocker cover gasket has been leaking for ages, its covered in a thick film down the side of the engine, but it doesnt smell so i'm going to leave that one till it does, as on an N52 its not the most pleasant job in the world.

The interior was the grubbiest thing ive ever seen when i got it, it looked like its been on a farm, there was thick dog hair and straw in between the thigh support when i got it, various bits of stuff down the sides of the seat and the steering wheel was in a terrible state, somthing that can only be described as snakes skin?

centre brakelight is falling out and LEDs broken, OS indicator flashes fast / sidelight is out

slight hole in drivers bolster

So, since i got it on saturday , i have done the following;

Machine polish car - needs another going over as there is still some areas which are a bit dull from previous repairs, maybe a wetsanding session is on the cards

interior clean, a good scrub of the seats using neat TFR and a harsh scrubbing brush

retrofit bluetooth - hardwired behind the dash with a remote control on the dash next to the heater controls - looks good and was only £7

sanded down steering wheel (using 120 grit!!) i have bought some leather filler to get it back to a uniform finish, should be here soon

Leather dyed seat bolsters using furniture clinic dye

Jobs to do are;

investigate diff(?) noise

find out which sensor is playing up with the DSC Fault, pack out using washer

investigate vibration at speed (prob prop donut)

fit LED headlight bulbs, find out why drivers side indicator is flashing fast even though all bulbs work

paint brake calipers black

deep interior clean, seats out wet vac carpets etc

maybe some H&R springs - possibly coilovers

deep clean hood -its a bit mossy & algae forming, not terrible but needs doing

Style 108s refurbed in grey centres with chrome outer lip & 15mm spacers all round

fix rocker gasket

heres some pictures from this morning;

Think I was also emailing with the owner of this one on eBay. Looked like a lot of car for the money :thumbsup:
yeah, it seemed it on the face of it, but lots of undisclosed faults sadly :thumbsdown:

some non exciting purchases made;
C110 scanner to find faults, dead handy these for 30 quid can clear fault codes BMW specific ones aswell
s-l1600.jpg

3.99 centre caps, cos why not!
s-l1600.jpg

£5.66 ZHP knob, i've had one of these before, and aside the weight, youd be hard pushed to tell difference!
s-l1600.jpg

leather filler £4.99
s-l400.jpg

So in total spent about 15 quid on it so far, not including the c110 as i need it for my e92 aswell and will keep after selling the car

£27.99 3rd brake light
s-l400.jpg

Awesome thanks, worth a punt for the money!

so some more progress tonight on the interior,

removed both front seats, hoovered out years of crap, scrubbed carpets with APC, cleaned down sides of seats with a brush and some APC, then refitted and cleaned all plastics using APC, i like a matt finish on interior plastics, not a big fan of silicone based products inside.

Disappointed with the ebay brake light. Wouldn't recommend might aswell get proper one for sake of 25 quid.

Fitment is a bit s**t in the corners
