Z4 is no longer in garage

I guess it's all down to setting personal expectations, I always knew mine was not what I'd regard as a sports car (sdrive30i), and when I bought it, it was almost completely down to me wanting a posing car, and I'm happy to admit it :) it does the job of looking nice very well, and it gets me from A-B. it's definitely not without it's faults though, my previous z4 coupe was much more reliable.

Your comment on the reliablity of your Z4 Coupe is interesting. I had the E85 roadster and the coupe and both were completely trouble free during my ownership, were v economical to run and had a far superior build quality to the current Z4. As you will know they were built in the USA then BMW decided the new E89 would be built in Bavaria - goofed on that one didn't they.[/quote]

Sorry completely disagree with you there :)

The E89s build quality is well on parr and above the old models IMHO, just look at the interior for starters. Every model regardless of make has their archilles heel. Don't forget the E86/86 has had its fair share of build problems and the E89 is no worse. Don't forget also the N20 engine is a new powerplant and has won this years engine of the year award. Personally I'm not a great fan of the engine but I've had no problems with mine and is smooth, responsive and reasonably economical. Compared to alot of other non BMW forums I frequent theres alot worse out there.

If you like the Jags then I can see the Zed isn't for you

Tim.

My e85 wasn't trouble free either but I've had far more issues with the build of the e89

Having said that the e89 is a much better every day car than my e85 was.

Just nipped over to jag. Still love the F type but that boot is a no no for my only car. The XK was beautifully built but at 16mpg urban that's a non starter too.

How did you find the dealership experience compared to BMW Maniac?

Quite impressed by our local one , for me JLRs archilles is the engine .

Well its hard to say, I was only there for 20 minutes. Guy was nice, helpful, you got the impression it was less corporate and more caring, but then I've had that with BMW dependent on the dealer. This was 'Guy Salmon Jaguar' in Stockport.

Yes, the F's boot is virtually useless. The XK's is huge but I agree the fuel consumption is worrying. My daughter lives in the Western Isles and we usually visit 3 times a year. It's a 1500 mile return trip which in the 28i costs me circa £220 but that would probably double in an XK. However, I'd probably arrive in better condition which at my age is a significant factor! Fantastic drive though in any car with a bit of grunt. When I had the E86 Coupe my wife wouldn't drive up with me - she used to fly and I'd collect her from the airport!! Good system actually.

Gary your Z looks amazing, not as good as mine, but still amazing  :poke:

There isn't anther car out there for me yet

And sorry to they guys who have them, absolutely no disrespect, but the SLK is far too feminine....

Thanks for your thoughts Tim - all good stuff.
I think I've probably done my time with BMW or maybe it's just an age thing - having got fed up bouncing around in numerous BMs' it's time to head for the peace and tranquility of a Jaguar. Whatever happens I''m determined to avoid M-B.

Which is interesting as Guy Salmon is the Sytner group- but my general impression from JLR dealerships is they are more individual than BMW although I was really impressed by BMW Batemans when we visited at the National. Dropped by the local Porsche centre and I thought they were exceptional ( no plans to get rid of the Zed more thinking about the RRS replacement)

With regard to reliabilty I had 2 e86's the first had no issues , the second one the CD changer failed on second day of ownership but was replaced under warranty , I have now had 2 e89's the first one had a rattle pretty much from the the first month of ownership but previous exprience of a dealer destroying the inside of your car fixing rattles (not bmw) made me live with that and at 2 years in the electronic handbrake failed once again fixed under warranty so not perfect but not that bad.

When it comes to other cars well nothing I can actually afford , like the the aston V8 but having driven a used one think it would ok if I could afford to have a new one as second car , Jag F-type love the way it looks but the pricing, hoping that when coupe comes along it will be cheaper although im guessing it would still be too much for me

As an owner of a Z4 and Jaguar I can see why people would look over the fence at that brand. They do seem to be on a roll at JLR. Several new models out and coming, too of JD Power and much better dealers. I know as I use both.

Comparing F type to Z4 is difficult as it's way superior. I've driven all in the F range, but £100k for a specced V8 is out of reach. XK is nice but a dated tourer, again up to £100k for an RS.

Shame my Zeds only worth £6k

The basic F Type is £58K with a very good spec including nav etc, so the Coupe should be down on that. A new Z4 like yours is near £50K list with a similar spec.
I will probably end up with an XK, assuming I do change, and would go for a year old car which currentlyare sub £40K which is not far from what my current 28i cost just over a year ago!
Importantly, Jaguar have just announced that they have got the top spot in the JD Power survey for 2013 - second year in a row!
Having said all that have you seen the new BMW i8? Not sure what it's all about but it looks good.

The list on mine was in the region of £53K but thats still quite a gap to an F-type

Car prices are an obscenity especially at this end of the market and what really concerns me are the trade-in values. I think I'll be lucky to get much more than £20K for my 28i if I decide to get rid of it early next year at which point it will only be 18 months old!
I bought my first new car in 1960, it was a Morris Mini-Minor and I paid just under £400 - the heater was an extra!

For this reason I sometimes wish I was born 50 years earlier so I could have enjoyed the era of more simplistic cars. Secretly I'd love a 2cv or metro, sure they'd go wrong at some point but they were so much easier and cheaper to fix.
