Z4-forum weekender: Skye, 14/15 May 2011

May have been mentioned already but the Applecross road (just north of the Skye bridge) looks like it'd be too good to miss.....

It's really just too far for a quick trip up and over the Bealach Na Ba pass from Skye - due to the standard of the roads it would need a full day to get there and back, although it could be an option for the Sunday for anyone who wants to head north before heading south again. I've driven it in a few different vehicles and TBH it's not a road you can hoon along due to the width and number of blind corners and summits. But it's worth doing purely for the experience, the views and the drive.

Put me down as a probable please!

Are nets the best defence against these midges or can sprays be just as good?!
Excellent :)

Midge nets are the most effective but they can be a pain if you want to eat/drink! No spray is completely effective but they do help - "Avon Skin So Soft" is the best thing to use, technically not a midge repellent but it's what most folk up north rely on. I tend to use Skin So Soft on exposed skin, e.g. hands, etc. combined with a midge net. There is the chance that the midges won't be around in force at this time in May, but I wouldn't risk going unprepared. And also the slightest hint of wind means the midges get blown away

i can't see so many of us hair backed Z4 owners going into a shop and asking for Avon Skin So Soft

if thats what you use up in Scotland, i dread to think what the southerners use lol

Right, I should be free to make this weekend, as should the other half.

That's as long as they don't change my rota yet again without telling me....

Picked up this thread when Kyleakin was mentioned.

Just to let you know, there is NO filling station in Kyleakin anymore. The filling station n Broadford does not sell Super Unleaded either. I have checked and the garage in Kyle of Lochalsh does, however.

Be warned Unleaded is £1.36 a litre up here at present.

Also, in May, you should not have to worry about Midgies, they don't tend to appear till June/July time, but of course they may make a special appearance just for you :)

cheers, Ray

Nice one Ali, I've added you to the master list in my first post. Around half the folk stayed in the hotel last time so you're not the only one who needs to MTFU :)

arealhighlander, thanks for the heads up. Due to distances etc it's pretty much a sure thing everyone will need to top up their tank somewhere up north, so there's not much that can be done about the price!

Put me down for this I've just booked the weekend off work. Never camped before but I'll give it a bash.

Good stuff!

Camping should be OK. Unless it rains. But the pub is only a 2min walk so we're sorted either way :D

Updated :)

Looking like a good number of Z4's for this again, but the more the merrier...

I must be mad!!!!!!I've just had to turn down 3 months work in the Phillipines to try and make this run.
Hopefully there will be no midges, for those torn between camping and the Hotel, get a tent it won't be as far to walk from the huge BBQ just start praying now for good weather. :)
oh and the small matter of a family weddingto attend and a Rugby Club reunion  . Looks like I'll have to settle for 8 weeks in Brazil. It's a hard life :D

Ally, just to update you - should be camping. Kirsty has agreed to give it another shot as long as I buy an airbed

Good to hear, but buy 2 single airbeds rather a double it will make for a much more comfortable night.
