Z4-Forum INSURANCE scheme with CHRIS KNOTT :: 0800 917 2274

Wow! 37 years old, 9 years no claims, clean license, no accidents, previously driven a Mini Cooper S, driving my Z4 for a month. Chris Knott wouldn't even entertain me for my 04 30SE (worth £6 less than my Mini was).

'Have to have been driving a performance car over a year'. He didn't even ask what Z4 it was! I think the Mini was more powerful than a 2.0 or a 2.2 Z4 (170 bhp to 150bhp). In fact if I was going to have an accident it would have been much more likely in that little nutter of a car.

Apparently it's because "it's a rear wheel drive." Gee, thanks! Hadn't noticed till you pointed that out. So is every flippin BMW, even the 1 Series. Don't see burning hulks of them around the road or road safety campaigns against RWD cars. "Rear wheel performance cars are a lot more difficult to handle" If you are putting high power through the front or back it's equally as dangerous, I think you could convincingly argue the reverse. I'd rather deal with over-steer than under-steer any day.

I hate to be negative about a service on a forum, but I have to agree with the comments above, this lot shouldn't be official insurers for this forum. That's shocking. But hey, you guys obviously don't want my hard earned!

A quick 'Confused' check shows a whole load who are willing to insure me for around £600. My current insurers (those performance specialists 'Admiral) did me a £560 deal with £250 excess.

One positive, I feel like an eighteen year old again desperately trying to get insurance for my 1.8i Cavalier and not getting passed saying what my age is!!

Unfortunately, RWD vehicles have performed badly for the insurers and it's just not profitable for them unless you're aged 30+ and owned it for a year. They're just losing money hand over fist on those outside this criteria.

One RWD car model on another forum has been completely withdrawn so bad was the claims loss ratio.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, your a broker right? So what you do is get deals from other insurance companies? You dont actually underwrite the insurance yourself?

And (if that is correct) in your search of companies apparently no one would touch me with a barge-pole? Because I'm so high risk (just to remind, good postcode, parked on drive, 37 years old, driving since 17, 9 years no claims, clean license, had a fast (but FWD) car, yadda, yadda).

I spend 5 minutes on a price comparison website and get 15 reasonable quotes from normal companies, not mad 'specialist insurers'. Who are you asking? The deals must be magnificent for the 5 people you insure.

Don't worry, I'm not bitter. Got insured for a decent price and I don't even have to move my details. Your loss.

And just a thought, if you are struggling to insure RWD vehicles, might be an idea to avoid BMWs rather than set yourself as a specialist insurer for them. Might be a tough one that.

I think you've hit the nail on the head there.. as they're not specialists in anything.

For example, this is a list of car forums I know for sure they're advertised as having a "scheme" on:

Corrado owners forum
Honda Civic Forum (CivInfo)
MIG Performance Vauxhalls
Skoda owners forum (BriSkoda)
MX5 owners forum
Astra's owners forum
Rover 200 owners forum
VR6 owners forums
VX220 owners forum
Ford Mondeo owners forum
VAG owners forum
R32 owners forum
.....

The list is endless.
Basically, it's just generic insurance and they're hanging on in here for the slim one or two who they will quote for.

axa have been best for me on both the zed and the golf, still dear though, post code urghhh

I just thought I’d try and explain a little more about the insurer’s decision to amend the criteria for our insurance scheme. Please believe me when I say that we would love to insure everybody and I’ve enjoyed reading people’s feedback when they talk of our prices, customer service, claims handling, etc. However, the insurers have been hit hard this year and when trying to find out why, they have discovered that, in general, there are certain elements which are causing the problems. Hence the reason to only accept modifications with cosmetic changes and modded bhp increases of no more than 20bhp.

Also people must have at least 1 year's NCB – no introductory discounts are allowed, no more than 1 SP/PC/PL conviction offence per driver and minimum premiums are £250 for Comprehensive & £200 for TPFT cover.

It seems that people outside of this criteria are losing money big-time for the insurers though of course this is a generalisation as they understand not everyone claims in these ‘areas’. It’s just that once bitten, twice shy.

It only affects new customers btw.

May I reiterate that it’s not us who have made this decision but the insurers. Let me point you to this article which tends to sum up the market at the moment - http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/Business/Car-Insurance-Premiums-Surge-Ahead-Over-Past-12-Months-Consumer-Intelligence-Research-Finds/Article/201001415534529?lpos=Business_Second_UK_News_Article_Teaser_Region_8&lid=ARTICLE_15534529_Car_Insurance_Premiums_Surge_Ahead_Over_Past_12_Months%2C_Consumer_Intelligence_Research_Finds

Hi

If your car insurance renewal is due in September, please feel free to ring us for a quote on our scheme!

The parameters have changed in that the scheme insurers don't accept bhp increase mods by more than 20bhp or people with more than one conviction or who have had a fault claim in the last 12 months.

I'm due a renewal do I qualify:

26 - I know u say 30 but what the hell
Previous cars boxster (£27k) leon cupra
9 yrs driving - 7 yrs ncb
0 points
No mods
3.0 53 z4

Leon - nope, you wont. It's 30 and no concessions.

I'm 29, 12 yrs driving, 11yrs no-claims, no points, no claims, decent post-code, garage, several years experience with high-performance rwd, no mods.

My renewal from (.........) was £413 a year. Chris knott a bargain £318 a year.'

So try us on your home insurance as well!

Roger,

Details and pics of your Zed would be good in the 'Newbies' section......

It’s fair to say premiums are increasing this year due to the increased cost of claims rather than the increased number of claims and these premium increases are imposed on us by the insurers.

Even though there is obviously negative reaction to this, our renewal retention rate has only dropped by 5% from 81% to 76% so it seems that approximately 3 out of every 4 people still renew with us.

I’m also hoping that after a period of time (such as 12 months or so), the criteria will be relaxed somewhat but we will see.
