Been on the bmw website and it says my car has a software update, and to download it, pop it on a usb (FAT32 formatted) and to plug into the car. Trouble is, I can’t seem to find a software update option in my menus. Car is a 09 reg, manufactured December 09

Can anyone enlighten me as to where I can find it or what I haven’t done? Thanks

I may be wrong, but I believe it is not possible on 09 Z4's to update iDrive software / firmware from USB.

You can however, update maps from USB.

Try putting the usb drive in the glove box socket then turning on the ignition and the car should automatically see the update and install, make sure you only have the update on the usb drive and not in a separate folder

Telephone s/w updates are done from the USB port in the central armrest , map updates are done from the usb port in the glove box.

There is some ambuguity as to whether yoir car can be updated thsi way, since its free try it!

This thread shows the update process..

Have a look at the following picture:

If there is also a marked "i" on your screen, you should be able to update the Navi by an USB stick.

Does the map update ability coincide with the telephone s/w update?

They are two completely different sub systems..

I don't know. But the multimedia/phone update is completely independant and can be /should be done at home.

Just had a look at this, my car is also available for the update. However if I try to open the .pdf for the update details nothing happens, just blank pages! Tried the right click and select 'save target as' but nothing there, not even the 'save target as' message, unless that's a PC thing?

That is my understanding as well.

If the software update option is not available from iDrive, I believe the only way to update iDrive, other than maps, is via dealer, ista/p, etc.

Try with a different web browser? Working ok here with Chrome / macOS Mojave.

I remotely performed the multi media\phone update just the other week. i.e. downloaded the s/w over the air. Worked pretty slick and didn't take long. I had trouble reading the pdf with Chrome\Win 10. Worked ok with MS Edge.

Your car appears to be supported by BMW according to their web site...so it appears that you are/have not followed the correct procedure

So..

Get a usb stick ....1gb-32gb in size
Insert in pc
Format in fat32 format
Create a label “test”
Copy the bin file you’ve downloaded from bmw software site to usb drive..just the file no extra folders..
Go to car insert usb stick in central console
Switch car on / start engine
Go to sub menu where software update should be shown

Hmm. I’ll give it a go again with another usb stick. I can’t seem to see the “software update” option in the settings menu though, unless this only appears once it detects the usb stick correctly? Mind you, it detects the usb stick right now when I go to media.

There might not be a an update if what you have on the USB stick matches what is currently running. If I go to https://www.bmw.com/en/footer/software-updates.html and type my vin it says there is a s/w update but I already instlled that s/wversion over the air a week or so ago.
