My biggest concern at the moment is how this effect the life of the N52, all this extra power is it really sustainable. Mines on 160k with 40+ track days.

Yes, a concern.
Didn't their development Z4 throw its chain recently?

Yeah it did. Although that car had over 200k with very bad service history. I’m waiting to see the final numbers on that coupe, will be an eyebrow raising number that’s for sure. I’m keeping an open mind so we’ll see. I’ve just got my coupe back from them after being there for 2 months, powder increase is noticeable but only at the top end, I’ve lost a bit of drivability so will be leaving it with them for some more tweaking.

All part of the development I guess. Interested to see how Sonny’s develops, for me who ever can deliver those solid results can take my cash.

I completely agree. For me though it’s proof in the pudding

I have gone through the BDS video on MILVs again to get it right in my head what he is explaining . I now get it and realise that it wouldn`t really make any difference if they were real MILVs or not as it is the principle of the engineering used in the valvetronic . However it is hard to explain the amount of times MILVs have shown an improvement on engines that have been tuned before and after fitting MILVs not just after . If it was just after fitting MILVs then you could say it was just the tune that was making the improvement . I didn`t have a before and after dyno done just for the MILVs so I can`t comment on that but I know [ref]Liam22[/ref], did and he said at first he lost power and has just posted that he has removed them . I look forward to seeing the progress BDS make going forward and it would be good to hear a response from Marty at Bimmermilvs but if what BDS are saying is proven to be true then it might be a very bitter pill for him to swallow . I will happily remove the MILVs if proven not to work ( which it looks like a strong possibility ) and go with the BDS arms but would want to stick with Josh@Severn Tuning so not sure if they will supply them separately ??

Next stage is a weight saving one when I get round to it . When I did the carbon roof one of the photos showed two polystyrene packages .

This is what was in the second one.

and I also ordered a polycarbonate screen which I am sure I will have fun fitting . The blue tint is just a protection sheet which will be removed . Bit of a shame as I quite like it :)

Very nice, is that from Goeke? It'll be interesting to see total weight loss, guessing a good 25kg or so?
I've been tempted to do this in the past, trouble is I need to lose weight from the front not the back :headbang:

No actually it`s from Geoff Steel and yes I think it comes in around 25kg for the original tailgate or there about . They apparently did one to show photos on their site at the same time I asked if anyone had ordered one in Carbon . Long story short I ended up with it . I need to lose weight in the front also but that`s just on me

Lol. Not much I can do about the big iron donk up there, everything else around the front is marginal gains :(
Interesting, I didn't know they did one, just had a chat with them :)
Assuming with that finish you're not painting it? Should look pretty cool with the roof, good luck with the install, let us know how it goes

Nice touch with the carbon hatch! Will you be painting the exterior part, would be cool to leave the inner unpainted with the carbon showing.

Has it got all the mounting points/any threaded sections installed or is it going to require some work?

I was talking to Geoff Steel about the tailgate 2-3 years ago as there were no photos. So I think they did the carbon one based on my interest. Ultimately I couldn't figure out how to make the wing mounts work so didn't purchase.

I did replace the glass with polycarb and I was able to remove and repurpose the rubber seal. BMW want a fortune for it!

I am undecided about painting it or not as I`m not keen on the join lines which you can see at the bottom corners of the tailgate . I will probably leave it as it is . I asked them about a M style carbon bonnet but haven`t had any response .

As above I think I will leave it for now . The inside is not a carbon finish unfortunately .

It only has the threaded holes for the strut and the rubber next to it plus the hinges . The rest will need cutting etc to fit the lock and I am in two minds whether to fit all the trim back on . In fact I am in two minds whether to do it myself or get a bodyshop to do it as it may be more work than I was anticipating . Any thoughts ????????????

Some photos of the inside of tailgate .

Shame it’s not carbon inside but that’s not really important for a part like this. Would have been bonus tartiness only :D

I have no real experience in doing this kind of thing so can’t help I’m afraid. I can’t remember how the hinges attach but I assume you’ll have to drill then bond something in place. Strangely, the Geoff steel site says it includes threaded holes for the struts and hinges but later goes on to say they leave them blank!

The lock and badge might be easier to understand once you take the original apart, I’ve had the interior panels off but never looked at how it’s fitted.

If it were me, I’d try calling a few places and see what they say and might charge.

I have just updated reply as there are threaded holes for the hinges and struts plus rubber stopper next to strut . Same as you I have removed the trim before but not the lock mechanism . I will have a search on the forum and internet to see what I can find . I am normally quite happy to do stuff like this myself but just have a bad feeling about it for some reason . I know of a couple of places local to me and will visit them tomorrow to see what they say and take it from there .

Ah, if the hinge holes are there then that’s good.

Cutting an opening for the lock should be simple enough as you can template it/eyeball it from the original. Once you have the new one open and side by side with the original I’m sure it will all make sense. Drilling a couple of holes and putting in some ‘non critical’ fixings for the lock shouldn’t be too bad. :)

That`s what I need to hear

Removed the tailgate yesterday . Only bit that was a bit tricky was removing the third brake light . It didn`t want to budge after removing the nuts and springs . There are also 2 clips holding it in but even with them squeezed together it still didn`t want to move so I used an extension piece and a small hammer to gently tap on the end of the bolts moving from the outside edge in and they gradually started to give until it finally came loose. Today I weighed the tailgate without the trim and all hardware removed and it was 21.45 kg . I don`t know how much the spoiler weighs but lets say 1kg ?? so a total weight of 20.45 kg . The new carbon tailgate was weighed and came out as 7.9kg . The polycarbonate window weighed at 3.0 kg . Total weight saving then is 20.45kg - 10.0 kg = 10.45 kg . Not as much as I was hoping but still a fair amount .

Next to work out where I need to cut holes to fit the lock and how I am going to fix it all back together :)

Nice work that! Still quite a chunk high up gone. Would you be able to bond the original window back into the carbon?

I could do but I have got a polycarbonate one which is part of the weight saving .

Makes sense! In my case, I’d replace the rear hatch at some point to “future-proof” my car, so it’s less about the weight for me
