Z4 crank no start

Dear members of the forum,

TL;DR: crank no start > replaced crankshaft sensor, spark so starts on brake cleaner, replaced fuel pump relay and MAF (found that was also defect), without success.

I have a problem with my BMW z4 e85 2.0 from 2008. It started with a flashing (orange) engine light on the highway on a trip. Then I stopped and got a crank no start. Got it towed to a German garage that only found a plug of one of the coils wasn’t properly connected. Then I could drive it home again. Only after a day I had intermittent crank no start again. It only started sometimes and that got worse and worse.

Reading it at that time gave P0370 so I replaced the crankshaft position sensor, without improvement. He also had a spark at the spark plug then. After that the suspicion grew that he was not getting fuel because it did start with brake cleaner in the intake. It also didn’t really have consistent pressure on the Schrader valve on the fuel rail, sometimes it would squirt meters and sometimes nothing at all. Then I checked all the fuses and replaced the relay of the fuel pump. Again without success. Then I arranged access to INPA through a friend and read it out. The three things that stood out were the error codes 2F08 (Intake air temperature sensor), 2F44 (EWS preventing start) and that I did not get a value for the MAF. Replaced the MAF immediately, again without improvement. I did notice that if the battery is disconnected for a while, it starts better afterwards for the consecutive 5 attempts. The battery has a good voltage of 12.4v out, charging 14.4v and does not dip below 10.7v at crank. I deleted the error codes and since then have often had failed start attempts and driven a number of times. The error codes have not returned.

My suspicions now based on the situation and knowledge gained from the forum are the EWS and the fuel pump. I can do EWS-DME synchronization with INPA, but that does not solve it for me. I did read that after making changes in INPA you have to turn the car off and remove the key for about 10 seconds before starting it again, I'm going to try that. I can also turn on the fuel pump manually with INPA and I can sometimes hear it (?).

Does anyone have a clue where I should look next?

Thanks in advance,
Stan
