‘03 3.0i auto CRANK/No start intermittently

When my Z starts it does so flawlessly. It barely cranks and fires right up. Runs and drives flawlessly.
Slowly it developed a crank no start that has gotten progressively worse.
When it just cranks
• There is no digital gearshift indicator (completely black) on the dashboard
• The temperature gauge rapidly climes to full overheating and then the red light goes out.
Never know when it will start. Tried multiple keys, door locked, wait times etc. Nothing has been repeatable. The closest to anything repeatable is the car doesn’t start, then it starts, then I roll the car by putting it in either reverse or drive (which I don’t think I should be able to do) and then the car will only crank. I’ve never been able to restart until it’s sat for hours.
When she just cranks, the 6301 Fuel Pump Relay IS NOT BEING INITIATED. I have removed the relay cover and manually activated it and the fuel pump activates,
Once—just once—while I was rocking the car against the Park stops, a relay clicked (not sure where) and the gear select indicator lit up and the temperature gauge went to cold. I knew then it would start flawlessly and it did. I do not get any significant codes. It always cranks vigorously upon every key turn.
• The lights next to the gear selector always shows the correct position
• I have only an airbag light and error code
• The doors do not unlock well and the passenger door only attempts to unlock. Sometimes the driver’s door will unlock. The door lock button near the handbrake worked when I brought the car 6 months ago, but hasn’t worked since.
• Only one key worked at purchase, the other was dead. I revived it. Reprogrammed the keys myself. Never saw a difference in which key is used since then and during troubleshooting I frequently try both and I flip them over.
• the under front end is destroyed. I’m missing the front 1/2 of the passenger fender well. All the underside plastics from the rear of the front tires forward and the passenger side behind the fog light plastic is missing with the driver side cracked at the bottom.
The car rarely starts now and can go days and many cranks w/o starting. I quit trying to turn it over if I see there’s no digital park indicator and the temp gauge pegs, as she always just cranks. If I see the digital gear indicator and the temp gauge NOT pegging, she always starts flawlessly.
I do not have a BMW specific code reader and am using a bidirectional scanner that has had bmw added. I’m saving my pennies for the right one and would love recommendations as to what one to purchase.

I’d look at the gearbox position switch. Maybe the car thinks it’s in gear? Wouldn’t normally crank if it was though. Try starting it in neutral and see what happens.
