Z4 coupe - which HID kit?

i need to take my passenger side headlight out anyway as i need to repair a broken tab (ive had the kit from BMW for months but not got around to it yet) so im thinking i can remove bumper, remove both wheels, take head lights outs and give them a good clean and repair broken tab, see if i can find why the passenger side is foggy inside (suspect a crack near the broken tab) and seal it up, then while its out im guessing it will be MUCH easier to fit the HID kit before putting it all back together and also.... i can fit the fang protectors while im at it...

ill wait for a couple of photos from you but im pretty sure im going to be doing this upgrade next week!!

how much better is the light output at night then?
 
I didn't manage to get out last night and test so the real test will be driving home from work tonight. I'll update the thread this evening.
 
yes please, im looking forward to doing this now as i thought about doing this before but read it was illegal and a big no no so just gave up on the idea. and for £60 its a really good upgrade!! (providing it works and does actually give off a much better output)

look forward to some pics/reviews :D
 
These are a couple of pictures taken during the day so you can't really tell. Annoyingly in the second picture there's no comparison as it was the offside light that had gone and stupidly I changed the nearside first.
 
oh what, shame u didnt have a comparison of the 2 types both installed, when i do mine ill try remember and hopefully i can put some photos on here aswell so others can see for themselves.

u need to change out the side lights now as that would annoy me lol.

pretty sure ill get these as they do look better just from that pic alone but will wait for your review on your drive home :driving: :thumbsup:
 
Yeah, side lights will be next as they now look like tea lights more than ever.

I went for 5000k in the end, what about you?
 
As promised - a terrible picture.

Pretty happy with the colour (also 5000K) but would rather it whiter (warmer) as I still think it's bluer than my tastes.

The Philips LEDs are a good match but work out relatively expensive (£25) once you've included the Canbus devices. However, they are the best looking when the lights are off (you can't see the SMDs mounted etc.)

both pics even in daylight look much better already. looks like ill be ordering a conversion set in the morning after your drive home review :thumbsup:
 
Wow! JINGLE this is a must mod. I don't know why I didn't do it sooner. I can actually see when driving at night. No more having to slow to an almost snail pace when anything with headlights comes towards me. I think I've put one bulb in upside down (ops) but its still 300% better. I'll swap it round tomorrow.

That is a fantastic improvement but are these road legal and will they pass a MOT?

I was always under the impression that HID conversions in Halogen lamps were illegal, is this not correct?

It's a fantastic mod that I'd definitely consider if it's totally road and MOT legal.
 
My MOT man said he's happy. So that'll do for me. As long as they are set at the right height etc.

Lol, yeah. I only thought about checking after the installation as I didn't see anything in the guide. Turns out that the bar thingy on the bulb should be at the top. Think I've put my offside in upside down. Hey ho. The projector lamp keeps it focused until I get around to swapping it round.
 
woah that looks so much better than the view from my drivers seat with my lights on haha!

what makes u think yours has 1 upside down? does the light output not match or can u see in the housing?

You can see the shadow on the ground caused by the metal bar.

I never realised there was an upside down :lol: though I think both the metal bars on mine were at the top.

That is exactly it. The shadow. Still much happier even with a shadow. :driving:

Yeah that's the kit I bought. Nothing else needed apart from some dexterity. If you look back through this thread you'll see the side lights for £5 that were suggested. If you don't want candle type side lights I'd get these too.

Do you have H7 projector lamps?
 
Just had a look back through your posts and it seems so. When you pull the old bulb put you take the connector off of the back and use this later. You'll need to remove the little metal attachment from the plug as this will be used to secure the HID bulb. It's a bit fiddly getting the connections through this opening but with a bit of elbow grease it goes through.

I cut off the rubber seal thing as I was installing the kit within the headlight.

When it arrives it all makes sense really and is not as technical as one would think.

I did mine with wheels on etc but it does get cosy. Might be easier without as you'll have more room to fiddle.

Hope all that helps and you will soon be one happy zed driver when the sun sets.
