Z4 airbag module plug causing Kbus issues and IFH-0009 connection error on INPA-- Solved

Hi everyone,

I have a 2005 Z4 E85 who's central airbag module went out due to water. I ordered a module and got it installed and went to program it following this forums instructions https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=115539
Unfortunately I hit a major snag along the way and am reaching out for help. When doing the step using WinKFP: "Edit VIN and Flash Module" I was using the physical module for both the original and the new module have a model number of 6939810 which I believe correlates with selecting 6962766 in WinKFP. I selected Sim85 in ECU family, then selected the ZB number as 6962766 and kept Unverbaut selected for integration position. I proceeded to enter the full vin and click program. I was met with an error code which is attached as a photo. Upon evaluation, I found that I no longer had communication with a few other modules on INPA. and a different code reader shows me only the last 7 of my vin when it originally showed all 17 on the reader and only talks with around 5 modules instead of the normal 10-12.

As of current I am assuming that the programing failure and error caused a different module to have communication issues but I don't know enough to not cause greater issues trying to diagnose and fix the issue.

I am almost ready to take it to a mechanic but am concerned that it will be very expensive and I don't have a ton of money to go around.

Welcome to the forum.
Firstly, don't panic! If the SIM85 has issues it very often upsets other modules which are all connected to the K-Bus.
You may find if you unplug the SIM85 then the other modules will start communicating again.

Once you get to that point it is potentially a duff replacement module.

Hi enuff_zed!

Great news, after unplugging the module, I believe that I have all the modules back that i previously had. This is a major relief because I thought that I had messed up a main ECU/module and did not know how to find out which one I had altered.

This is the settings i had in WinKFP. Could it be that my port/ecu address is not correct?

also here is the info from INPA that I was able to gather after the airbag module was unplugged. Is control unit: bordmonitor related ?

finally here is the errors i receive when on NCSexpert when try to access SIM85. It appears like the last 7 of the vin is correct but it has added characters before and a C after the correct last 7 of the vin.

I am based out of Indiana so its a little far to drive to Norfolk

Yup that’s a fair old trek!
Start again, making sure you can see the module in INPA. Then use the alternative method in WinKFP as it usually won’t pick up on the ZUSB number.

I have done a little more digging at it appears as if I cannot see the module in INPA and get the error code IFH-0009: no response from control unit. It still is able to cause the other modules to go wacky as soon as the new airbag module is plugged in.

Is there a way to tease apart it being a wiring issue, module issue or compute to car issue?

If plugging that unit in causes issues elsewhere I’m pretty convinced it’s a dud sadly

SOLVED

I figured I'd write up what was wrong with the safety information module.
first off, I started thinking about checking the plug more in depth when I came across a similar write up at https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=141430
Turns out enuff_zed did a write up about how a fowled plug to the safety information module caused kbus issues and cause other messed up modules.
I took a tiny probe the size of the modules prongs and checked each socket for good ohm connection with a little wiggling. Turns out that the 12V power that turns on with the ignition was fouled in the plug but the 12V all the time was still fine. The wire was ok going into the crimped part but the crimped part was what had failed. Thus I am assuming parts of the safety information module worked in an impaired manor causing Kbus issues. I fixed the crimped portion and it was relatively smooth sailing from there. I did have to track down a few airbag codes but finally I was able to get the dash free of lights and all the airbag modules and the safety information module free of errors. :rofl:
