Z4 3.0...wrong choice

The youth of today 21 and never satisfied! 2700 on insurance, your nuts. Why not just get a hot hatch then upgrade when premiums are more sensible. I love my z4 3.0, it has more than enough poke for British roads. Can I ask what your mates drive??

I personally don't think you'll ever be satisfied, you'll get a z4m and go well it's not as a fast a veryon...

Enjoy the car for what it is - a great roadster!!
 
I doubt if you will even get insurace at your age, with 7yrs NCD and at 31 i struggled to get insurance, what i mean is a decent deal. Most of the companies quoting close to 1k. finally got one for about 560.
 
The insurance costs are going to be the killer for you on the M but if you can afford it then why not? Ignore the condescending replies that some have made, there are plenty of people who get used to the power their cars give them and feel the urge to seek out something more exciting. With some it's after a couple of years, with others it's a couple of months. I was happy with the performance of my Z4M until I made the mistake of driving a 997 turbo which put things into perspective. Having said that I've had the M for 3 years now, which is a long time for me, and it's still keeping me interested. There aren't many better cars out there for the money and if you can work out the financial side then I would suggest that it would keep you interested for a bit longer than your current car.

I dont really want to wait until the insurance premiums are low, im still in my youth and want to enjoy myself :) i have had the 106gti etc when i was 17. My friends all drive fiestas/306's/205gti/207 and things.

Thanks for the more positive reply! Im getting an insurance quote run today so will find out the results! really liking the sound of a 911 996 aswell, lot of bang for your buck, but im guessing the insurance will be stupid.

Not o nly that I hae a squeek coming from the dashboard of my car and its drving me mad!!!!!
 
Good luck to you yammyfan. I'm 37 and had all sorts of slow-mobiles back in my early driving days. If you can afford a Z4m/911/996 and a trip to the Ring then I say then go for it mate :thumbsup:

(and get your mate to take your R1 too!)

Re MPG - there really is nothing to worry about. There is very little between the 3.0Si and the Z4M. It looks oworse on paper but on daily commuting I get about 300 mileas out of a Z4M tank, the same route but much less fun would get me 330-340 out of a tank.

The Z4M is cheap to buy and not expensive to run. It certainly is a practical daily runner.
 
M insurance is alot higher... I have never had a Z4 3.0 but I went from a 330 Sport to an M3 when I was 24 and it more than doubled to £1200. That was with 5 years NCB; 4 years ago but don't think it's changed much. A lot of insurers also won't cover an M car for under 25s. The M is quite a leap in performance and is certainly a quicker car, but it's a bit heavier to drive too.

Personally I don't think a Z4 3.0 is worth £2700 a year for cover...but I guess the bonus is that if you are spending that much on insurance, higher servicing costs aren't going to make the slightest bit of difference! MPG difference compared with a 3.0 is pretty negligible.

I think it is fast enough, the M// is a totally different animal. Possibly you just don't drive it correctly... :poke:
 
im 22 and i couldn't get a quote without it being ridiculous on a m. so if your paying 2700 now your be looking to pay nearly 4 to 5 grand but if you have the money do it :D
 
Or possibly he does drive it correctly and it isn't fast enough for him. Just because you personally like a car doesn't mean that another person might find it less satisfying.
 
Anything that can crack 0-60 in under 6secs and bang on a 155 limiter is not slow in the car world..

I'm 23 years old dude, so not far off your age,Lucky enuff i know a few insurane people and get mine for £1500 full comp in my name.Z4M..M3 where about £2500 odd for me.Buy if your paying that much for a 3.0 your looking another £1000 for a M

The 3.0 is a beaut of an engine smooth,Power everywhere..free revving good engine dude and very nice to use.depends what your looking for really? Out and out speed?.

Use the car for a nice quick ride.I owned a fair share of bikes myselfs SV650,CBR600RR,2006 R6..and now a RSVR1000 Factory..I use them for my pure speed craving and trackdays..for more fun and dangerous than cars :P

Yammy totally agree with enjoying yourself while you are young, I just spose it seemed a bit mad spending sooo much on insurance when you can blow it on other passions! (I am only 26 so the age dig was a bit unnecessary on my part :wink:)

I asked the question about your mates to see if it was a compeitive thing, but quite clearly isn't!

I will be suprised if you get a quote for the M that is any where near reasonable (considering what you are willing to pay now), but you never know and its your hard earned dosh!! . Good luck with the search :thumbsup:
 
I didn't think that 3.0l was that quick to be honest.

It's not definitely not slow, but it's not that fast either. I've still got my Mk1 TT that's had a few choice mods and I'd say the TT was slightly quicker.

The M is different entirely.
 
Well if he can afford a FEW trips to the ring a year, plus a Z4M and 4-5k insurance he must be doing something right! Especially at 21! I had a Supra when i was 21, but that more than amused me :D

If your track orientated and want pure power, why not something like an Aerial atom then? The 300bhp supercharged one.

You had Supra at 21 hes got a Z4 i had a push bike or the bus :( :rofl:

Agree on the Atom or one of these bike powered kit cars then just buy a cheap runabout for everyday use

I personally think £600 is the max i would ever spend on insurance per year, or near that. But im now married with a gorgeous daughter so cant complain :D Done my whole young thing ten years ago :thumbsup:

I assume the "...choice mods" were performance enhancing?

Otherwise it's 1st time I can recall anyone here rating a standard Mk1 TT as faster than a Z4 3.0L ? :wink:

Was looking at a Supra TT around 4 years ago but a good UK car was around 12-13k add a few K in mods your looking at 15k so decided to save a bit more and buy my Z glad i did although the Supra still looks a beast when i see one and with a decent exhaust they sound awesome
 
yammyfan: I don`t know if I`ve not read the post fully, but is it a Coupe or Roadster that you have ? If it`s a Coupe, it will be 265bhp, and should feel fast enough for the road, at least, maybe ?

I`ve had loads of cars, and bikes (including an R1, a few `blades, Gixers, ZX`s.........all sorts), and IMHO, especially riding as you will at 21, you`ll never get the same rush from any car as you do a bike..............so; in view of that, I`d stick to the 3.0 and save on the insurance/running costs, etc...

I`ve never owned, or driven, a Z4M, but I have owned an E46 M3, and although it WAS quicker than the 3.0, it didn`t feel appreciably-so, in most real-world driving situations, until you start to head into licence-losing territory, and I don`t know if the extra performance will still leave you feeling a bit wanting in the long run (again compared to the bike) ?

Do you drive with the Sport button on, or off, by the way. I`ve found that the Sport button makes a major difference in every day driving, as the engine is so much more responsive. To me it`s just how it should be all the time, and if I`m honest, I don`t really see the need for the Sport button at all.........it should be running permanently on this map in any case ! :P

Just my tuppeny`s worth mate, but it may just be a case of accepting the Z4 for it`s strengths, AND it`s weaknesses, as the adrenaline`s never going to flow the same as it does with a bike. Good luck with your choice anyway, and all power to you for being able to afford these toys, and their associated costs at your age.......
