Z4 3.0...wrong choice

I`ve had loads of cars, and bikes (including an R1, a few `blades, Gixers, ZX`s.........all sorts), and IMHO, especially riding as you will at 21, you`ll never get the same rush from any car as you do a bike.............

Yeah same here. Totally agree, its nice to have a happy medium though, which i think the Z is, Z4M or 3ltr.

i bought the car under the impression the insurance was going to be 1500 quid (which is the quote i got before going to pick it up) after taking it for a test drive and dumping a large wedge on notes in the blokes hand i called up to pay the 1500 pound for my insurance and forgot i had not declared my 6 points.....bang there it goes up to 2700 quid, couldnt be assed with messing about with not buying it so just went for it.

Im not going to pay 5k for insrurance! I think what i really want is something that is neck snapping sit you in your seat fast, until i can fund a Gallardo/911 turbo its not going to happen and I will stick to getting my speed fixes/track time from the bike!

Even so i have emailed a few tuning garages to see what they can do with what i have :)!!!

ESS Supercharge it maybe? But then your insurance would still be stupendeous.

I doubt you're going to get anything "faster" with your insurance problems (age, points).
but, tbh, you've shot yourself in the foot by buying the R1 as your first proper bike - you're not going to get faster than that for a long time

Do what I did, and stick with the bikes.
Eventually you'll get bored of straight-line speed, and you'll start finding the better driving/riding challenge - corners.
Doesn't matter what you can do in a straight line, the real fun is stringing some complex turns together quickly - and you don't need a //M or a R1 for that :D
For example, on all the forum runs I've been on, the //M drivers only pull away by any measurable distance when we hit a bit of straight road - through the tight twisinty bits, I'm right with them throughout!
I'm sure if you've been out on a few tracks with the R1, you must have noticed the lighter bikes (R6, kwak 6, Gixxers) all catching you on the corners - when I had my R6, it was piss easy to pass the R1 riders on the corners, and watch as they rage past you on the straights :poke: :P

but seriously, good luck with the quest for MOAR POWAH! :)
Hope you find something that's fast enough for you,

Yep, i have had 3 R6's(2000@17, 2005@ 18, 2006@19) 3 WR450's and numerous moto x bikes since i was a child. Been on some tracks on them including most recently the nurburgring on the R1, which was awesome! not many R6's coming past me there i can tell you that for sure! :P...but plenty of locals in some crazy GT3's!!

I ride the r1 in sun, snow, rain and sleet as its my daily commuter and toy so there is no chance of me stopping biking!

ETA: the next bike is deffo going to be a BMW S1000RR mmmmmmmmmmmmm

how the hell did you fit 3 R6s, 3 WR450s and an R1 into a maximum of two years of riding?!

Either you fall off way too much to be considering a faster car, or you're a competitive rider, in which case you shoulda known no car would come close lol.

hang on - re-read you post.
As you had an R6 at 17, you must be a competative rider, as you couldn't have ridden it on a track day, nor on the public road.
What competition do you race in?

I had a 2000 R6 on the road at 17, I have had WR's along side having sports bikes..... :driving:

ETA: Touch wood never put a road bike down the road. Ate the floor regularly off road as expected.

How could you have an R6 at 17 then? Was it restricted? Can't remember when it changed, but I did my bike test in 2002 (22) and the restriction was on then.

my license was restricted to 33bhp. :poke:

I could ride anything when i turned 19.

I would say i have done over 100,000+ miles on various motorbikes since i was 17

I think the 'problem' with the 3.0 is that it doesn't *feel* fast. Many a time I have been driving along, looked at the clock and been going a lot faster than I'd thought I was. It's so well built and smooth that when you're doing 60 it feels like you're doing 30. It gives Scoobs/Evo's etc. a good run for their money but in the Subaru or Evo you can really feel it when you put the power down. Whereas in the Z4 you don't really. It's a car with two personalities I think, it can be sensible and smooth, but you can also challenge it with speed and twisty roads.

I have driven an M, and the difference is noticeable enough to make you think "Yeah, I want an M". But being a young one myself the insurance is ridiculous really. Most people won't even touch me. I had it hard enough trying to insure the 3.0si when I got it 2 years ago. So I reckon your looking at a good 3 - 5k with 6 points. Which in my opinion is not worth it, unless you really have money to burn and don't care.

I also think another problem for you is that you already have a hell of a lot more speed with your bike. So anything else is going to feel really slow compared.

You have had a busy couple of years. Did you manage a trip to the moon along the way ? If so you are always going to be dissapointed by the speed of cars :D

But seriously,...if you are already spending £2,700 on insurance I think that is ridiculous, and any more would be insane. Unless you are extraordinarily wealthy you might look back in a few years and wish you had stuck that money in a savings account.

Apologies for being negative,
Dad.

if you want a proper buz, get a turbo car and chip the living daylights out of it.That'll give you a thrill, but will soon piss you off and become irritating as driving them is a pain when not "in the zone". I quickly grew out of my turbo Renault 5 when in my 20's,it was proper fast but a handful and positively lethal in the wet.Changed to a Celica which was as fast top end and much nicer to drive.Pulled more ladies in the Celica too. :D Also, if you want a car to regularly do the ring, a Z4 isn't really it.The brakes aren't good enough. It handles well enough, but you'll run out of brakes quite quickly.

Cheers dad :P

Nope im not extrardinarily wealthy, i have worked for everything I had had/have! and yes spending 2700 quid on insurance is pretty mad, i dont intend on doing it again!

Ive spent a lot of money jaunting about and doing lots of things! dont want to look back thinking "well i could of done that but i put some money in my savings so i can buy new bathroom when im 40"

I have some savings so im OK :) Cheers for all the advice. Conclusion is that my insurance is stupid on a Z4M so will be sticking with this for a bit!

Like Lucy said, Z4 deceptively fast. And Z4 is cool, not just fast. At 21 with 6 points your insurance is cheap imo. Taken any extra training?

Re MPG - there really is nothing to worry about. There is very little between the 3.0Si and the Z4M.

About 10mpg on average is the difference between them, which is quite a lot imo. Based on doing 10k pa that would be adding roughly £50pm to your fuel bill.

But based on current valuations the Z4M still gives you a lot of bang for your buck!

Totally agree with this, the 3.0si doesnt feel as quick as it actually is, its so refined and quiet you dont realise how quick you pick up speed..with the wacking big turbo of evos you'll feel like you are going loads faster but not really as much as you feel.

Your getting a bit of stick here matey with the whole spending a lot of money of insurance thingy etc..I started off paying 3200 when I was 19 working my way down to 2200 this year being 22 (and an accident unfortunately which stopped it coming down further) but my passion is my car and whats wrong with puting money into it when you enjoy it so much! If people like to put money into houses and enjoy that, well then thats all good for them. But I (and you) would rather put into our cars so keep puting it in

As for the topic of the thread lol , I would say if you can afford the M to buy and run then why not go for it, just make sure you get a good long test drive in one first. I bought mine private and was driving it out and about with the seller for almost 2 hours!

I was just going to ask the same thing.

If I had a spare £2,700 lying around then I would spend it on petrol. :driving:

Not to mention how do you get to do all this sporty driving, spend thousands  on insurance and have savings spare at age 21. When I was 21 my annual salary was £9k !

Forget my advice. At the rate you are going you will be retired at 30 !
