Z4 3.0 Coupe market watch

Heres a nice car for someone.

I spec’d my Coupe as an SE as I’d read at the time it was better for B road driving. In practice the SE dampers are soft so don’t lead to much control. I put B6 dampers on the SE springs - whilst much better it didn’t seem perfect. Put sport springs on the B6 dampers and it felt much better suited. For a road car it’s now a good package - excellent control but retaining suspension travel for a B road bash. Put a sport rear roll bar on, leaving the SE bar on the front and it’s taken the vast majority of understeer out with camber pins pulled on the front. For a pure road car it’s now a strong package.

Then engine is a peach. I’ve got an Eisenmann race and trimmed off about 2/3rds of the sound generator foam. Sounds great all in BUT I do long for the induction noise of the M engine ITBs. But the cost to change is too large to justify.......

That's really interesting. It sounds like an SE with the optional M-Sport seats like yours might be just as good a starting point as a Sport, as well as potentially cheaper!

You must also be one of the longest-serving Z4 owners.

I did have a gap between 2011-2018! Just bought it back! 8)

Well its slim pickings out there right now for anyone wanting to get into a Si sport coupe  just 18 on AutoTrader & over half of those look tired leggy examples or lowly specced Se so little to chose from for potential buyers , prices also noticeably up on the values seen in last 18 months .
Right now it looks like a £8500/£9k budget is needed for anything decent & under 100k , good times for owners though

I have owned a few S54 M3s, including the CSL, and maybe 8 or 9 N52 engined cars as well over the years.

Couple of things I have noticed. The N52 in the E86 is the best yet imho, it feels like it has more torque down low and just wants to rev and rev.

The S54 is magical when it is on song, however, you do need to wring its neck a bit.

The difference between the E86 3.0si and the M is no where near as big as say the E46 330i and M3. But I think that is a combination of them both being over damped, where the 330i was always a very comfy mile muncher, and the N52 si just working so well in the smaller E86.

I have to say I have been shocked at how well the 3.0si performs.

The s54 actually has similar or more torque at every point in the rev range compared to the n52. The n52 peak is earlier than the s54, so that makes it feel torquier (plus lighter weight), but in reality there isn't much difference (I've owned an M3, z4 si and z4m also btw)

The si can feel pretty much as fast as the M on the road imo. As has been said, the M has to be really pushed to over 5.5-6k revs to feel faster than the si as this is where the curves really start to majorly diverge on the dyno graphs. Before 5k they pretty much have the same torque and power. The M rewards hard work, leave it in 3rd and 4th everywhere and you might as well have a si.

Sorry, I meant the si 3.0 'feels' far torquier and just wants to rev compared to the other N52s I have had. The N52 in my 130i also felt a bit like this as well to be fair.

I think weight plays such a huge part.

The CSL was only what? 18hp more than the regular M3? But it felt far, far more and you could really feel the reduced weight.

I love the S54, to me it is pretty much the perfect example of what a fun car should have engine wise. Quick, revvy, sounds pretty tasty, and has to be worked. There is a sense of reward with the S54 that is missing from the B58, in fact missing from every FI engine I have experienced, sure it is effortless, but that is not what I want from a 'fun' car.

Problem for me is I am not a fan of manual gearboxes, well most of them anyway, or rather most clutches I should say.
Having said that, I bought an F31 320d ED Touring a week or two after I bought the Z, it was really to get me out of a pickle as I had sold my 5 series and needed something quickly, it was local, priced right and while not really doing the miles thought it would be fine for a few weeks. The thought of a diesel and manual makes me shudder. But...I have really liked it, removed the CDV in the slave cylinder and bled it properly and have a really nice, quite light, clutch. I did Norfolk to Dorset yesterday and with traffic on the M25 and M3 it was fine. Also, even with 3 of us and the dog, and roof box it used under 1/4 tank of fuel. So reckon I will just run it into the ground. I had been considering swapping the Z and the 320d for an F31 Alpina D3 Touring. Now after getting the geo done on the Z and getting tyre pressures right and finding the 250 miles yesterday with a manual OK I'm having a change of heart.

Maybe it will be a Cayman or Z4 M and keep the 320d. We shall see.

Ah makes sense. I forget how many variants there are, the one that made it to the si and 130i seems to be the sweetest.

That's had some money thrown at it with the M bumpers

Yes, but look at its MOT history, very obvious signs of it not being loved. I wouldn't bother personally.

I never got that far, the bodyworklooks poor too. Why go to the expense of sourcing and fitting the M bodykit if you don't look after thew car mechanically...

Question on that - what about it stands out to you? The 3 fails, or the fact they didn't replace the offside front tyre despite 3 advisories in a row?

The details of the fails/advisories. Why would you drive around with the pad warning light on permanently never mind on tyres that are considered unsafe. Why would you not replace worn bushes from one year to the next? We all have months where you say "can't do it this month' it'll have to wait" but two years?

Hi all,

As I’ve recently purchased a Z4C, I thought it was worth sharing my market research for those interested in current values. Obviously these are asking prices and I can’t comment on how much they actually go for. Data was collected from various sources including Motors, Autotrader, CarGurus, eBay and Pistonheads during a July this year. To be honest I’m surprised how many Coupes there were for sale given their rarity.

That's some pretty thorough research Zedebee.

Even if it does make me wish I could have kept the one I sold in February until July! :(

Just checked autotrader - only 15 coupes for sale at the moment. Pretty sure there were generally around 60 pre COVID at any one time
