Z4 2.5i in desperate need of love - new wheels p. 2

Hey!

So I went ahead and bought a Z4 2.5i (manufactured in 2003, but hit the streets in late 2005) with 112.000km on the clock. The car didn't see enough love from its previous owner, but I plan to turn that around. The car is good at its core but needs a lot of polishing around the edges to get it into the pristine condition it deserves to be in.

Here´s the birth certificate:

As you can see on these images, it doesn't look great. The alloys are, in my opinion, an insult to all things good and nice. However, the "to-do" list is of a demanding nature that puts new wheels on the shelf:

  • Brakes - It needs new front rotors and pads. Getting fixed this friday.
  • Control arms - The right side control arms are worn out, but I'm having both of them replaced.
  • Bushings - New bushings to go with the new control arms.
  • Sway bar end links - Driver side end link was worn out, so they're both getting replaced.
  • Springs - Classic Z4 problem, I've heard. Both of them have snapped and they'll be fixed ASAP. Most likely going with OEM Sachs springs, unless someone could suggest a better alternative.
  • Soft-top motor - I'm not sure what's wrong with it. I'll have to remove my top and take a better look, but as for now it doesn't open. Unlocks and locks the top (when manually operated), but doesn't move it. It *sounds* fine though, but that might not be an indicator of anything good. Going to look at the drains ASAP.
  • Fan drive belt - Starting to make annoying noises at low rpm's.
  • Ash-tray - Someone managed to break it, I guess I'll be scrounging eBay for this part every now and then. The interior trim is a bit shabby, I'd like to change it ($$$) but I might go ahead with wrapping it. Have heard that removing the trim is a pain in the rear to accomplish.
  • "Glove" box - That tiny thing had its handle snapped off. I have a new handle, but it seems like the entire box will need replacing.
  • Powered mirrors - I can align the mirrors to the left and down, but not to the right and up. I believe it's something in the controls (perhaps water damage?) that's off, but I don't think it'll be too serious.
  • Seat belt - The passenger side (this is a LHD car, of course) seat belt has torn a bit, so I'll have to get that changed out ASAP. Sadly, they seem to be a bit hard to come across and the US part dealer (Pelicanparts) that I've been doing business with for the last years doesn't seem to supply the EU version of Z4 seat belts.
  • Trunk brake light - The upper one. I'm debating whether or not I should get a clear light or a red one. Would eventually like to change out the head- and taillights to clears, since I'm not much of an amber man. That remains a low-priority at the moment though.
  • Air-bag mat /belt tensioner - I think that is the cause. Just noticed it this morning, but it complains that my apparently hidden passenger needs to fasten his seat belts while I'm driving. My mechanic said that the seat-belt tensioner was broken, and this might be the cause of the air-bag light as well.
  • No sound from the radio - I haven't tried a CD, but the radio is silent so I'm thinking it might be the amplifier. I'll have a radio technician look at it. From what I've read, I've got a more expensive HiFi sound system that has a DSP amplifier. I'll have to remove it and take a look at it.
  • Polishing - It needs some polishing love. A lot of it. Previous owners used dubious methods to clean the car and it really, really shows. It pains me to look at the car, to be honest. I'm a nut that uses two buckets along with a mitten to clean the car and I've kept mine relatively scratch and swirl free. This one isn't.

Quite the list. Thankfully, I knew all of these fault before I bought the car (had it thoroughly checked). The biggest items on the list will be changed in less than a month or so, and that leaves the non-essential factors such as the soft top motor and audio system. Some might (and have) call me daft for taking on this project, but I'm determined to bring the car to its former glory, if you will.

My plans, after the to-do list up here, aren't fancy but as follows:

  • New wheels - I'm an OEM man, so I'd love to get my hands on a set of 107s or 108s. They're not readily available in Iceland (with only 4 - 5 Z4s here, I believe), so I'll have to get them from the motherland or the UK. Either way, it'll be expensive!
  • iPod integration/AUX plug - This'll probably be the first thing I do after I get the amplifier fixed.
  • Clear corners / light conversion - I'm not an amber man. Eventually I'd like to switch out my old lights for a set of clear ones.
  • Hardtop - The car came with the preparation kit (I'm not sure if its still there), and if the cost of a new soft top motor is similar to that of buying a used/new hardtop, I'll go with that option. I might even take a trip to Germany in order to save money in shipping.

That's all for the Z4. This isn't my first BMW, I'd like to list some of the other cars I've had through the years:

E39 M5

Great car. It wasn't so great when I bought it (much like the Z4), but today I'd like to say it's one of the better M5s on the streets of Iceland (and we have quite a few, per capita).

E24 635CSi

This car is a hobby that me and my father have had for the last years. We bought it in its original condition and have simply maintained it since then. The car was imported from Germany in 1997 from an estate where it had stood unmoved for a few years after its previous owner passed away. The car is in mint condition and is a blast to drive, and quite the headturner. We're the third owners after it rolled out of the factory.

E46 320ci

A lovely car and my second BMW. It didn't have any power to speak of, but it was a fantastic looker and a great ride.

Taken during night outside the capital area. I love that road; always vacant outside business hours, long and straight. Also a great place for photographs!

9.jpg
I sold the car a few days after I took this shot. I see it every now and again and it always manages to bring up some regret and a longing to have it back. Who knows what will happen in the coming years?

E46 318i

My first BMW! A very basic car that got the job done, and I like to think it did that in style. Certainly not a BMW powerhouse, but one of its building blocks to be sure. I sold it to an older couple who still have it today and it still looks great.

Taken at the same place as the coupe, just outside the capital. It's an ancient lava field and a 20 minute trip down this road will leave you at a geothermic hot spot.

So, I guess that's it for now. I'm sorry for the wall of text I've laid on you, but hope you enjoyed some of it. Take care!

Nice write-up - glad someone will love that little Z4 - and I have to agree they are probably the worst alloys I've ever seen fitted to one of our babies.

Loving the 635 too

Great write up - hope the Z$ work goes OK. Nothing sounds to major. Keep us updated as you go

Thanks all for the kind words and compliments!

It might be appropriate to call this car a Z$ for the next few months. I've ordered all the major parts I need to get the car into a decent condition, soft-top motor and amplifier aside. Next step is to get the parts installed by a garage and then I can look into sprucing up the exterior of the car!

I'd like to add another car to the list. While it's not mine, it was bought (in the middle of the night) as a training car for my younger brother who is getting his license this week (avoid Reykjavik for the next month or two). The car is an E30 316 (notice the lack of an "i") and was ... rusty, to say the least:

11.jpg

Doesn't look too bad from this point of view. Shows signs of improper treatment, but not at all unsuitable for a student driver.

Then you take a closer look in decent lighting and see things like these:

14.jpg

Well, here it is a few weeks ago:

1.jpg

Every speck of rust has been removed by an expert and the car resprayed in its original color, Lapiz blau.

4.jpg

E30+__+lei__+__+ry__v__rn.png

Here it is going to the shop, where it'll be treated by anti-rust chemicals. Next step is fitting the interior in along with the bumpers and it'll be ready for the road in near mint condition!

And back to the Z4: I'll be sure to post updates to Z4-forum. It's an awesome community and very helpful, and stuffed with content. Keep it up. :)

Thanks!

Took the car to a garage for new rotors and pads and I've just finished an order on new control arms, bushings, sway bar end links and springs along with a new fan belt. Once these parts have been installed the car will be in good working condition apart from some non-essential equipment that'll take its time to get fixed (soft top motor and amplifier, as an example). The car is remarkably good for all its fault and an absolute thrill to drive, despite its relatively small engine (this coming from a previous M5 owner). Loving every moment of it!

I admire your hard work and dedication - well done!

I definitely echo that sentiment!

+1 - proper love lavished on your cars, I cannot believe how much you stripped out your brother's. I hope he's paying you...somehow :D always nice to have your sibling in your debt

I am looking forward to photos of your Z around Iceland - you must have access to some truly awesome roads

Thanks again everybody.

The work on the E30 was done mostly by my father and a good friend of his, who also was an expert mechanic and could do anything he set his mind to when it came to cars. The results were staggering, really. The little engine only has 112.000 km on the clock if memory serves me right, so it's an excellent car to restore to its original condition and maintain it in that state! We managed to procure original 14" style 5 wheels that have been driven about 100 km since they came out of the factory in the 80s - even has original factory stickers on it.

I just got the Z4 back from the shop, and what a difference good brakes make. On my way from the shop, I stopped by a local Mothers/1z dealer and got a hold on some 1Z Gummi-Pflege (I'm hoping to reduce wind noise generated at high speeds, will look into aligning the weather strips and resetting the windows as well) along with a Mothers Headlight Polishing kit (similar/same as this one here) as the headlights have hazed quite a bit, although it isn't very apparent on the photographs up there. We also have an E61 530xi and a E70 X5 that might do with some polishing as well!

Now I'm crossing my fingers that my parts will arrive before the 4th of June, as that's when the Z4's next appointment with the car doctor is. I have a roadtrip planned in the car which I'm very much looking forward to, despite the car being radio-free at the moment!

I got a call from the shop just after I wrote my previous message. They told me that they had a new amplifier that they thought might fit my Z4, so I rushed down there (with my old one) and, against all odds, it fit like a glove and was a very rewarding plug-and-play job! The car finally has sound and I couldn't be happier, just weeks before my roadtrip which would be very silent without it.

The source of the amp surprised me. It came from a Land Rover Freelander, of all cars.

I'd like to keep those interested about the car posted on this forum. Should I remain in this thread or start a new one in a more appropriate category?

Oooo! Road trip in a Zed in Iceland! I'm jealous. I've had a few Icelandic road trips in some stupid hatch and had a blast. In a Zed, I can't imagine. You may find the lack of an audio system is actually a blessing, just stomp the skinny pedal to make music!

I hope you're mostly avoiding unsealed roads, they can beat you up a bit in a Zed. That's probably how the suspension had gotten so worn. I'd love to know more about your plans if you don't mind sharing. (Living vicariously through other's adventures  )

Non-Z4 related info starts here:

The plans for the roadster road trip aren't too fancy! I'll be driving ~400 km or so to a town in the north of Iceland (I'm in the south-west) called Akureyri where I'll be staying for about five days in a house that I've rented.

After I've settled in at Akureyri, I'll be taking a long drive around the fjords that cover it. The roads there are very scenic. I really wish I had better alloys for the car, since I believe I could really snap some great pictures of the car and country once there. Some things I can't wait to see and information for those interested:

800px-Godafoss_Pano.jpg

Goðafoss (is about 50 km away from Akureyri) which is Icelandic for "Waterfall of the Gods" and has been called that after Christianity was made the official religion of Iceland to save Icelanders abroad and home from massacre by the Norwegian king Ólafur Tryggvason. At that time, a pagan priest threw his idols of the nordic Gods into this waterfall.

px-Aerial_View_of_%C3%81sbyrgi_21.05.2008_15-39-42.jpg

Ásbyrgi (roughly 160 km away from Akureyri) is a canyon formed after the last Ice Age (~10.000 years ago) by glacial flooding and is said to be the hoofmark of Odin's horse. Pretty cool stuff!

There's an interesting aviation museum there as well. The sights aren't all that spectacular when compared to other museums in the world, but it still houses some interesting aerial vehicles such as a Douglas C-47A which came to Iceland in WW2, a Klemm L.25eVIIR which was flown to Iceland in Nazi colors in 1938 and an Icelandic Coast Guard helicopter that recently fell prey to the sea. The museum houses mostly small airplanes, but will be interesting to scour all the same.

Apart from that it'll mostly consist of driving through some great terrain! :)

Z4 question starts here

So I've given a lot of thought on wheels lately, especially today after I bought the new Land Rover amplifier. I'm uncertain which set I should buy, but right now I'm set on one of these three: CSL replicas, style 107s and style 108s. There are two other black Z4s in Iceland, and I'm pretty sure both of them run on style 107s and I'd hate to mimic them. A friend offered me his 18" E39 M5 wheels, but I believe they are far too big for the Z4.

Seems like the UK is the most viable country to buy from, since it's easier to get the sellers there to ship outside the UK and the shipping is cheaper than it is from the US (we pay customs and taxes of everything that enters Iceland ((Price+Shipping)*1.1*1.15*1.255)=final price). The Germans I've encountered are really stiff on this.

Of these three, which one is the easiest to come across over here?

You want 108s all the way - Check out Leon's thread here. Does a great job on refurbed wheels at very reasonable prices from what I have seen.

Love the scenic pictures

Those are very nice! I spoke to Leon earlier about a set of 107 but I had to back out of that deal prematurely. Thankfully we hadn't gone too far but I'm sure I'll start talking to him again once wheels move up on the priority list.

I've also been looking at eBay for wheels, mostly because at times I'm able to get a perfect price estimate. I stumbled across these CSL replicas. This being eBay, I take all descriptions with a grain of salt, but I'd like to ask you guys if this store Mad On Motors is any good and how their wheels are? Are they okay or should I avoid them like fire?

Don't use this company!! Don't buy these wheels!!

My first set were from them and from brand new one was completely out of balance, needed something like 230g of weights which no garage would fit as they said this was dangerous incase it few off and hit someone.
Anyway kept phoning them up and they were really awkward about swapping the wheels and also kept saying they had none in stock even though they were selling sets on eBay.

In the end I bought a set from a different company and still have the first set in my garage two years later
