Z4 2.0 Tickover lumpy

Hi
I have a 55 plate 2.0 z4 with 23000 on clock. Its still under warranty and I have had it in because I noticed that when standing ticking over the engine was slightly lumpy and if you watch the rev counter you can just see the needle jump slightly. You can also feel it when you have your hand on the gear stick. The garage BMW Chester said they could not find anything wrong no faults listed etc.
It is only slight but its still there. The car runs/starts fine accelerating its no problem. But its just annoying and spoils the car
Any thoughts would be appreciated as I'm going to take it back to them before the warranty runs out

I have a 55 plate 2.0l with 73,000 0n the clock, same, very slight miss, took it into my local garage no joy, there have been a few threads about this and no one has got to the bottom of it. If you are taking it back, I would be interested in the outcome, don't let it spoil your enjoyment, still a great car (albeit some would say the reason it's like it because it is short of 2 cylinders) good luck.

We don't get the 2.0's over here, but have any of you tried doing a carbon cleaning of the intake + manifold? A product such as Seafoam for example.

Thanks for the info fellas
Makes me feel a bit better that others have the same symptoms with the same result from Stealers
I will look into the manifold suggestion though seems a bit early for that sort of problem at 23000 miles
I'll live with it as you say great car
Thanks again

There have been cars with less miles having the manifold replaced. Somebody on here had theirs changed 3 time IIRC due to splitting.

Hi
Just to let u know they said the same- nothing wrong although the mechanic who I insisted come out to the car agreed there was a slight pulse or miss and a slught rattle under the car(that was another issue)
Overall not impressed with BMW so rang their customer service dept. They tell me the dealer cannot replace any parts under warranty without the machine telling them there is a fault. Apparently even though their staff agree there is a miss fire. Anyway after argueing with them I am putting a complaint in writing to them in case something goes wrong in coming months. They said they would record my complaint but could not guarantee to do the work under the warranty if a fault is later found
They then had the cheek to ask if I wanted to extend my Warranty!!!!!

Hey keep us informed mate,i made sure they made a written record of me taking mine in -just in case the problem worsens.

Mine is the same, picked it up yesterday 56 plate with 38k on the clock, idles around 900 and then jumps and and down ever so slightly at idle. I read a post on here from igniter ego had the same problem and it turned or one of his cylinders was knackered.

Hoping its a common thing with these engines and not something serious.....

Mines the same and my Sisters 1 series has done it from new, don't worry though its just a characteristic of BMW's 2.0lt engine.

ive a 07 2.0 sport with 17000 on the clock and mine dose this

thought about bringing it back but as said it is very common with this car

Thanks for all the posts
It does appear to be a problem on some 2.0 but not all. As I said to the dealer BM don't send cars out like this so they need to sort it out. Going to write them a letter of complaint to cover this as I took it in with two problems(rattle underneath) which their technician agreed were there and took it back out with them both unresolved. If it doesn't show on the diagnostics machine they don't seem to try anything else ie swapping coil plug/ plug/ lead etc. like you would yourself

PS The customer relations rang me the following day asked was I satisfied with the service so they got it. Said someone would ring me .....still waiting

Hmmm i dont see it as being a problem with the car
It just does it

There are alot worse issues, for example Rear springs made from twigglets

I've been driving mine around all weekend since picking it up on Friday and the lumpy tickover does annoy me. Coming to a stop its ok for a few seconds, the idle is smooth, then it starts to jump about a bit, like I said, not much, but its noticeable. I filled the tank with Shell V-Power fuel to try the higher octane, but it didnt make much difference. Will try running some fuel cleaner through the system.

Think I may take it to the BMW Specialist down here in Devon, ask them what they think, just the car has come with the usual 3 month dealer warranty so any problems I want to identify now and get them fixed! Otherwise, im loving the car.

I've uploaded a video of my idle to compare to others.....

I'm getting mine checked by an Independent BMW specialist tomorrow, they are running a diag and checking cylinder compression for £30 so cant grumble at that. The mechanic said they do hunt a bit at idle but as the car is under warranty im getting it checked for piece of mind...

Had mine checked today, all ok. The mechanic said it's common for these engines to idle like this and is nothing to worry about.

Those of you on here who have mentioned their idle is lumpy too, do you also find that when the engine is cold, that acceleration up through the lower revs is also slightly hesitant? I'm finding it on the colder mornings. I had the car checked over last week but i'm sure something isnt quite right. Wondered if other 2.0 owners were finding the same with theirs??

I have exactly the same Lumpy Idle tickover. Had new Plugs and coils fitted - still no better !!! AAARRGGHH !! its so annoying. There is no way BMW would develop a car with this "Characteristic !! "

Having mine checked by a speacialist this week. A colleague at work as one that purrs like a cat so it can be all 2.0's suffering. Spoils what is otherwise a great car.

If I get to the bottom of it I will share with you fellow sufferers !! Im gonna try the super unleaded thing tho !!!! Though I will be amazed if its that !

:x
