Z4 2.0 Tickover lumpy

Hmmm i dont see it as being a problem with the car
It just does it

There are alot worse issues, for example Rear springs made from twigglets

Thanks i'll try anything not a big issue but annoying more than anything and wanted them to sort it before end of warranty

Reading a few other places it would appear some people have had success by removing and cleaning the Idle Control Valve. Looks like a bit of a potch to get at it and get it out, cant find a specific guide on how to do it for the Z4 but have seen guides on YouTube for other BMW's

Anyone tried this?

I've uploaded a video of my idle to compare to others.....

I'm getting mine checked by an Independent BMW specialist tomorrow, they are running a diag and checking cylinder compression for £30 so cant grumble at that. The mechanic said they do hunt a bit at idle but as the car is under warranty im getting it checked for piece of mind...

How did the compression test go? Ive got mine booked in with a specialist on Tuesday next week. I must say Im learning to live with it but needless to say I will get it sorted if at all possible !!

All tests came back ok.... still no wiser :(

I guess in any other circumstances that would be good news !!

Like I say - Mines in on Tuwsday with a guy that is a BMW expert (30yrs) and is a friend of the family so I will get a straight answer one way or the other. What a saga eh!!

Car looks amazing....this only takes off a little gloss !!

Did the garage have any other ideas? :headbang: :headbang:

Hi

The garage said they would try changing the coils checking the plugs etc, but they didnt think it worth taking out the idle control valve and cleaning it. However to my shock, the recent diag highlighted the cat wasnt working on the exhaust!!!!! At just 39,000 miles!! Thankfully the car is under warranty but this is the first car ive ever had where ive needed to have the cat replaced!

Will be very interested to hear how you get on Tuesday!

Hi Gary

Good job its covered under warranty eh.

Must admit im slightly aprehensive about taking it tomorrow - Im not overly optomistic based on everyone elses efforts so far but at least if Im sure nothing is actually gonna fail then its some comfort. New Coils and Plugs did nothing for mine but like you, the garage paid for mine (£285 all in) so better to have them done anyway - one less thing top go wrong !!

Will update you tomorrow night either way

I'm still betting its the idle control valve needing a clean.....

Hi Gary

Yippee !!! Its sorted - running like a sewing machine !!

Had car on diagnostic and it showed that the tickover was actually lower than showing on the revcounter. No codes or faults (Using genuine dealer quality diagnostic equipment) but he reloaded a throttle map to the ECU and slightly advanced the timing. It now idles smooth as silk at an indicated 900rpm - though its actually only 850rpm when hooked up to the diagnostics.

And the cost sorting this super annoying issue ...............£50 !!!! What a bargin !! So new coils and new plugs (c£300) did nothing....but £50 spent with someone who has the right kit and experience and its sorted. Why BMW main dealers can do the same is beyond me - maybe beacuse they are just fitters (Old part off....new part on) rather than propper mechanics.

The mechanic who sorted mine is in Bradford....Alec Morton - New Lane Garage BMW specialists. (let me know if you need the phone number but its on Google) Dont know where you are based, but if its anywhere close its worth the trip - transforms the driving experience.

Im seriously chuffed - and its good to know that nothing serious was wrong. Id try a specialist and tell them what fixed mine - a few hours and yours could be silky smooth too....who says you need a six pot to have "Z" happiness!!

Let me Lnow how you get on.

Hey thats excellent news, unfortunately im down in Devon so quite some distance from Bradford! According to the computer they attached to mine it was running at 800rpm on idle, and varying between 780 and 815. Hmmm, wonder if my dealer can reload a throttle map on mine! Will have to ask them. Glad you got yours sorted though, wish Bradford was closer lol!!

Give my guy a ring....find out exactly what he did (I was too excited to take it all in !! Ha !!)

Mine was "Hunting" like yours....make the call...whatever he did it must be easier to get full details and pass them on to a local expert in Devon....Let me know how you get on mate

Good luck

Mark

Hi all, just had my rough idling 2.0 sorted by New lane garage BMW specialists

It had the same rough idle as described and now runs perfectly, the ECU was recallibrated and now it's great!, :D

Thanks for the heads up it was worth the 50 mile trip!

Nice one !! Alec is a top bloke !! Been a personal friend of the family for years !!

Always works on mine and my dads BM's

He sorted mine out after someone else diagnosed coils and plugs - both replaced at great expense (By the selling garage - not me ! ) to no effect !!

Alec had the car no time and then it was Sweet !!

I will let him know he owes me a beer !!

PS - What did he charge?

Yes its amazing what happens when a PROPER mechanic actually looks at the car, rather than gawping at a computer screen and spouting"computer says nooooo".

He Is top dog - A dour Scot but good none the less !

He has a Mint Sierra Cossie 2 door (Whale tail) and his son drives a stunning E39 M5 - he works there too

Even his Mrs has a Mini Cooper S - Hero ! :D

Hi,I had a brake fluid change and coolant change at the same time, the bill was £175 all together.

The chap was called Ian who I dealt with and yes the M5 and cossie were rather nice from what I saw.

I think we owe them a beer!!
