Z3 project...no going back now!

Looks great - it’s a shame that every step is such a struggle, it must lessen the pleasure of the process considerably. It’s odd that such an expensive kit was so poorly designed and not then refined as the problems became apparent.

I was naive. The kit was bought from a dodgy bloke who thought he could make a few quid by copying the original kit (badly), then had it sat in his garden for a long time because he couldn't get shot of it (because he wanted too much money). Along came muggins here. :|
As it turns out, it was a 'perfect storm'. Badly moulded, badly stored and now badly built. :o
I found out this week (when my boot lock didn't line up anywhere near) that my bootlid was moulded for a pre-facelift Z3. Mine is a facelift! :x

No-one mentioned that in the past 12 months!

It does, yes. It is more an expensive chore than a pleasure now. I look at the Ferrari badges on it, but don't think anything, as I know what it really is. Hopefully soon I can start to forget all the pain and frustration and see it for what it is supposed to be. :?

Spent the last weeks begging specialist bodyshops to come and assess the car and give me a price.
It has been a real struggle, as they either can't be bothered, or are just badly organised.
I have finally got three prices for prepping and painting.
As it turns out, my preferred painter is also the cheapest by quite a lot. It's not exactly cheap but a lot cheaper than the other two.
Downside is they can't do it until March! :headbang:

I can still spend the Winter carrying on with the interior, or as much as I dare before it is painted.

If they’re booked out until March I’d take that as a good sign, if they can squeeze you in soon probably not the right type of paint shop for something like this.

I was thinking exactly the same thing.

If a garage can take a car in next week there's usually a good reason why they aren't busy!

The bodyshop I am using only do one vehicle at a time, hence the long lead time. Many take in multiple cars and do work as, and when, they need to, so they can be there for months.
I have been quoted around 4 weeks for the work to be completed, whereas the others can get it in sooner, but won't give a finish time. I like the former better. My bodyshop also don't do 'general' repairs or insurance work so they don't need to 'fit things in' which then pushes back times on other vehicles.

They mainly do restorations on older GRP-bodied cars and prep/ spray new Cobra replicas. They genuinely seemed interested in my car, which is never a bad thing IMO.

They sound like the ideal place then!

Sounds good to me also. Means they put all their effort and time into one vehicle at a time. It’s the one I would choose. God this really is getting exciting now.

Talk about a confused car, so it's a Z3 pretending to be a Z4 pretending to be a Ferrari

Tribute Automotive kit (cheap stuff) that isn't really like any Ferrari model (they are shite scared of getting sued, apparently).
140k miles M52 2.8 Z3, which I guarantee is pretty rotten somewhere under there.
Z3 interior (apart from a replacement steering wheel), so little effort and ruins the whole 'point' IMO.

If it makes £10,000 at auction it will be doing well IMO.

Those auctioneers have a few 'replicas' for sale in this auction. None are very good to my eyes.
