...on a 2-seat, convertible sports car.

It must be...

2010+
sub 60k miles
at least 250bhp
Non-M spec

Go on, what would you buy? My initial thoughts would be a 987

To be honest theres not that many options

TT
Mini
SLK
E class convertible
Mx5 but they dont fit in the bhp
Fiat
Porsche
... its quite a niche criteria to be honest. Would be the Porsche nothing really stands out

Yeah that's exactly what I'm finding. Just ensuring I've covered all bases before making a decision.

I'm quite taken by this...

With the limited & quite specific criteria, the OP simply omitted the word Porsche to make it clear he wasn’t interested in hearing any other options :P

It seems more like you’ve already made your choice and are making up criteria to artificially validate your choice :poke:

2-seater rules out all the 4-seater and 2+2 options
Non-M rules out most sporty BMWs

I’m not saying I’d pick any of these over a Porsche, but it’d have to be a Cayman for me :P
  • F-Type
  • M3-conv
  • Z4 35is
  • 370Z
  • TTRS
  • SLK
  • Lotus Europa
  • Caterham (not 250bhp, but more bhp/tonne than the Coxster)

haha! Not strictly true. I've come into a little cash and have the opportunity to own something I've always wanted to do so: A Porsche.

That's very much the state of my heart at the moment, but definitely wanting to ensure I've fully worked my head as well before diving in :)

As for criteria... It's the same as when I bought my 30i, but with a bigger budget

i actually prefer the look of yours to the boxster.
like the cayman look better, but no convertible.

Yeah, seems very little point in offering any alternatives; the Boxster is the only thing that looks an even remotely decent proposition within your criteria.

If completely constrained to the Boxster, I for one would rather get something slightly older, manual, and the 'S' variant but that's just personal preference.

I would personally also consider the following alternatives, leaving money in the bank for holidays/trackdays/whatever your particular cuppa is;

Gen2 987 Cayman S
Honda S2000 Gt
VX220
Lotus Elise, possibly an Exige
Z4M Roadie/Coupe

A lot of these are variously older/higher mileage/M cars, and therefore unlikely to offer any meaningful pause for thought

Also, I'm sure you've already researched it by now, but you also will want to be a little careful with running costs on a Porsche. My friend has just had a service bill back for his 997.2 911 C2S..... a shade under £8k..... I'm sure the Boxster will be a bit cheaper, but don't get caught out... make sure to do your research and go in eyes open!

Would be an Mx5, with a nicely tweeked engine. More fun than any of the others listed hear, by a country mile. :D :driving:

If you could swing it i would be getting into a 981 Boxster...Drives so much better than 987 and frugal to run.

Start around £22k for miley models but £24k will get you into something with decent miles.

The other thing with the 987 you’ve posted Greg is it has the god awful push push pull pull paddles, if you’re going PDK DON’T get those, they’re horrible to use, even worse than the push thumb jobbies on the E85/6 ‘s. But I’m with Gaz 100% here, a 981 is pretty bulletproof.

Elise Club Racer (with a big shot of nitrous to get round the 250bhp requirement!)

Be a bit of fun and very different to the rest of my fleet :)

I’m a fan of the 370z especially in Nismo form. Other than that I’m also keen on the TT RS and waiting patiently for used Vantage’s to come down a little more.

If Coupes are off the list, and Ms are off the list I wouldn't be buying anything!

I used to have one...

I was a bit of a ricer in my younger days and had a 370z a few years ago.

I liked it,but not quick enough...Very very noisy in the cabin and the dual mass shake on the clutch pedal was awful...

And you coudnt fully turn off the traction control..
:x

Thanks very much to everyone for their input. It's greatly appreciated. I was wanting to just make sure there was nothing else I was missing and it seems I was about right. Will definitely consider the 981 and see if it's doable when the time comes.

Thanks again,
Greg
