Looks like a lot of us took the apprentice route then.
1998 during my sandwich year at uni, i was paid 8k a year for my first job but got fired after 2 months cos they blamed me for everything that went wrong. 2 weeks later got another job at Shell head office in manchester at 12.5k a year with free food at lunch time and onsite gym.... loved it

My first wage was basically what I got as pay on a YTS course - about £27 IIRC - straight after leaving school in 1986.
A year later I'd trippled my wage by getting a 'proper' job at Lasky's on about £70/week.
A year later I was on £45/week to do a computer programming course (COBOL/PL1) - but afterwards all the big computer users (banks, insurance companies, etc.) wanted 'trainees' over 21 and I was a couple of years too young, despite my getting an A*
By 1990 I was on £6/hr doing DTP for management consultants, and that's I've been since. Each year the pay went up about £1/hour and then at £15/hour they decided it was costing too much and wanted day rates. What we didn't realise was the agency was charging £30/hour and that's why it was costing them so much. So we cut out the middleman and went freelance at £15 an hour (with annual pay reviews).
It's now on a daily rate, negotiated based on length of project, full-time/part-time, location, expenses incl/excl.

thats a decent wedge for a placement - even if it was 2005!!!

Yep my aerospace placement was £15.5k.
My Brother works for IBM, he did a placement year, then went back after he finished his degree. Been there a good few years now.
