You guys with a coupe...

Same here, it was always the Coupe for me, never considered the convertible...two reasons:

1) I don't like the looks (especially hood up), it feels out of proportion IMO. The roof changes the whole car

2) I feel a bit exposed

Having said that I was given a Z4 3.0 Roadster while mine was PDId and it was brilliant. The top was always down as it should be - I was once told if you drive a Roadster with the hood up, the storm outside better have a name. The roof is for keeping rain out, in all other weather, put it down, enjoy the open top experience! if its cold...wear a coat and put the heater on

:)

I love them both. I tried to talk the wife into a coupe when she got her PT-Cruiser. No luck but I tried. I saw Rick Hunter’s coupe a couple of time in Seattle and just drooled all over it. I have never driven a Zed coupe but many other coupes like the Nissan 350Z and earlier Zs. I have owned two. But they are just coupes like any other rice box coupe.

If I didn’t have other cars, well maybe I would want a coupe. It is probably more practical. But my wife’s car is practical. My Mercedes is practical. The Zed coupe is an exception to this, but think of what they call in the Real Estate industry as curb appeal. When folks look at coupes they think and say nice car. When they see a roadster they think nice sports car. Unless you are really into cars, especially performance cars, you would just think oh well just another BMW when looking at the coupe, but the convertible is a sports car. (Just my observation don’t kill me over it.) :(

I am old enough to remember when sports cars came to this country. They were MGs, Triumphs, Austin Healeys, they were basic vehicles. An engine, a transmission, brakes, bucket seats, and soft tops. Most of the time you even had to add an aftermarket radio. None of this computerized junk we have today. Even my Corvette, and my brother’s bathtub style Porsche were rag tops. I only add this to explain my point of reference.

But as I have said before, it really comes down to your need and life style. They both have their strong points, and how you will be using the particular Zed should determine your decision not just looks. :)

1) I never liked the look of the Roadster (with the hood up). Hood down... that's a different story.
2) Roadsters, as nice as they are... are way too common on the road. I wanted something different.
3) I was never really interested in top down driving (gotta keep my Donald Trump hair prim & proper, yo). I love my bubble.
4) Although I will probably never utilize the increased performance of my Coupé, at least I know it is at my disposal whenever I wish it so. Hardcore is nice.
5) Yes... it is a practical SPORTS CAR. Very hard to get both at the same time. Good decision on BMW's part to make the boot lid as a hatch.

The Coupé version was the one that gave me the jaw-drop-excitement that the Roadster could never do. With that said, though, I'm glad there's a choice between the two. Makes more people happy that way.

And to answer the OP's question... the Coupé is very stiff compared to the Roadster. But I have gotten used to it and would want it no other way. 8)

Like the previous posts said, I think it comes down to life style. I am also addicted to the wind in the hair feelings, looking up and seeing the blue skies. I have absolutely no regrets. The M coupe is a very good choice for track events and every day driving. I am looking to add a coupe to my stable, may be a M3 e90 or M coupe. In my younger days, I used to own a Nissan 240Z. I had a lot of fond memories of that car.

Only ever owned one softop car. I have rented a few in the past on holidays. Don't like them to be honest!

The one I owned I got fed up with the upkeep in the end and I hardly ever had the roof down (admittedly it was a Suzuki Jeep!!). I would also never have a car with any sort of removable roof or sunroof. I've loads of trouble with leaks in the past!

A lot of the softop cars look so much better if there is a hardtop version, the Z4 included! :P

Love the coupe without doubt! The Z4 roadster and generally roadster in general offer that something special with the top down. :)

I think the UK has a large ratio of convertible cars even though people tend to think of the UK with rain  .We don't have excessivly hot weather nor particularly cold weather so verts can be used most of the year with the top down! 8)

I was never a "convertible fan" and actually never really desired one....until my first Z4. Now I can't imagine being without one. Summers in Canada are short, but for me it's completely worth it to have the top down on those days when I'm able.

I read somewhere we buy more verts per year than France, Italy and Spain put together I believe...weather is nowhere near as bad as some think, though this year was rubbish!

The thing is, its never too hot to have it down, i.e. you dont get burnt and its never truly (with a few exceptions) too cold to have it down.

Roadster works well in the UK - cant see me using much more than air con in Spain and when i went to Florida last year, had the roof up more than down on the Mustang GT!!

Having had two torrid affairs with ravishing roadsters (the Z3 and Audi TT), I just found myself falling for a little vixen called the Z4 coupe. I've always preferred the purity of lines that, universally, coupes offer... After all, is there any sexier a silhouette than a well sculpted coupe? And when I first saw the Z4 coupe unveiled... Well, whose heart didn't skip a beat or race a little faster?

But I can also appreciate the windswept spirit that only a true roadster stirs. So I guess for me it's simply that while I liked my roadsters, I am in love with my coupe.

Cheers.

today i wish i had a ragtop, i have terrible wind and i will be driving for over an hour

I love the coupe and may get one next. But i don't get the 'better looking' argument. The roadster has sleekest looking canvas roof available (though obviously not as sleek as the coupe) when up.

With the roof down with the roll hoops sticking up i'd say the roadster easily looks better.

[excuse to post picture of my car/] :D
