Yet another Roof Motor - Update with Pic

My roof motor has been getting progressively worse since last summer. Struggled to get it down and up for the London Meet on Sunday.
I have a BMW warranty but after speaking to them and my stealer a couple of weeks ago I couldn't get a definite answer as to whether the motor would be covered. I know some on here have had it done under warranty. £106 for the prelim investigation. :-(

One of the members on here recently reported that he'd had his done by Pete at Autotech in Telford at a very cheap price of under £600 with some other works included.
I've just phoned Pete and have it booked in on the 12th April......price around £525 to £550. Pete informed me that he would carry out checks before in case it wasn't the motor as he could return it to his supplier. I've told him I wanted a new one fitted regardless. Chatted with him for about 5 mins and he's done quite a few now. He informed me the book suggest a 3.5 hour job but he allows 4 to 4.5 as he fully tapes off the boot area to prevent scratching.
I told him that I'd be coming down from London and I'd pop along to the Telford shopping centre to kill time whilst he's doing the job. He even offered to drop me there and collect me after.

A very refreshing phone call compared to the ones I've had with Main Dealers with a man who obviously knows his stuff and cares about cars as reported on here and other BMW forums.

Even factoring in the 320 mile round trip I'm certainly happier with going this way than the warranty/ stealer option after the 2 recent bad experiences with 2 different Main Dealers.

Will report back with results after.

Yes and a highly regarded Indy at that and the cheapest price I've seen quoted on here.

Let's hope the jobs a goodun and I can report back positively.

Good result I would say. Better than the £1500 or so that a dealer wants to charge which would be 25% of the value of the car!
 
shame you cant get it out like a guy and his father the other week freed it up with wd 40 got it working cleaned it down and is now back in the car working fine.mine went 2 weeks ago my son works at bmw so he did it £280 for the pump.done in 70 mins .i have just been out in the garage cleaned the rust off the old pump sprayed wd40 in the motor washed the rust out .put some leads on stabbed it on the battery perfect running a treat :D shame i didnt think of getting it out cleaning up and testing it first :headbang:

I'm an Engineer by trade and if I had a garage I would certainly do it myself.
Saying that for the price I'm going to pay, would I want to get my hands dirty. :-)

As for the guys who have managed to get their motors working, I think they're only delaying the inevitable. Good luck to them but after doing the hard work and getting the roof off I'd change the motor and be done with it.

Someone at the Meet on Sunday had his done at a dealer and it was a £2000 job :-(

Thankfully he had a warranty but still had to pay £300 as there was an upper limit on labour costs.
 
is that 550 with the new motor.....

Its like the duck season they are all failing at once..... still if it does happen to me i will be heading down to telford myself,,, although having been before to the shopping centre?? book yourself into the pictures... better still go to iron bridge

'Twas me and been back to Pete twice since, once for new front suspension bushes on the wifes E46 and removal of the CDV (20 minutes and a tenner) on the Z4.

Delighted on every visit

Yep new motor,housing,oil etc.

'Twas me and been back to Pete twice since, once for new front suspension bushes on the wifes E46 and removal of the CDV (20 minutes and a tenner) on the Z4.

I think at £550 all in it's a great deal, look at it as a day out and a happy topdown return home :driving:

Keep us posted, he could turn out to be the forums number 1 choice!!! :)
 
Jimbo, get him to do your CDV as well if you've not had it done, be the best £10 you've ever spent.

my roof motor was replaced on warrenty 18 mts ago and now this one has stoipped working - i thought this problem was fixed post 06, but it seems a trip to telford is on the cards for me too
 
Is this failing of the motor a regular occurence on the roadsters? Any pre-emptive maintenance that can be done to avoid failure?
