Yet another Roof Motor - Update with Pic

rooki said:
Is this failing of the motor a regular occurence on the roadsters? Any pre-emptive maintenance that can be done to avoid failure?
Simple answer is yes roof motor failure is very common. Plenty of info if searched on here, roof drain holes get blocked causing water ingress of roof motor. :fightwall:

Erm, £550 is surely a great price but if you've paid for a warranty, kick up a fuss. Call BMW if needs be. The roof motor is a major component and the housing is well known as a poor design.

I had a problem after purchasing my car last year and the whole thing- hood and motor -was replaced by my dealer under warranty. I can't understand it but it does seem that it all seems to depend on whether you have a good dealer or not!

Thanks! Luckily I'm in a very dry climate and most likely won't use the car much in rain.

Pete at Autotech did mine last year - I supplied the roof motor and then it was £160+vat to have it fitted.

Did a great job and been back there for brake fluid change and inspection 2.

Highly recommended

Good stuff - At these prices I would also not be that upset if my 9+ year old motor packed up

I'm worried now about the tanker strike as I'm going down to Pete's the Thursday after Easter. If they ballot to strike the panic buying will go into overdrive during and after Easter. :-(
Even if I can get a full tank over Easter and don't drive the car until the Thursday, I'm not sure if I'll manage the 330 mile round trip on a Full Tank?

Life's a bitch :-)

I had my roof motor changed by Pete today. It's the second time I've used Autotech and you really couldn't wish for a more professional, friendly and honest service. He charged nothing for the full diagnostic checks which the dealer wanted £100+ for. Then having confirmed the fault and booked the car in to be done, the entire job took about 5 hours and he even drove my wife and I to the city centre and picked us up afterwards to save us the hassle of public transport ! Trust me if you want a good honest job, then this is the place to go.

BTW one word of warning for owners of later model Z4's: Ours is a 2008 model and the motor was effectively drowned due to the usual blockage of rubbish in the drain holes of the hood wells, so contrary to popular belief the post face lift models ARE still susceptible to this problem. Make sure you keep the drains clear or ..........

Well I had it done yesterday and extremely happy with it.
Would certainly recomend Pete and Autotech.
It came in at £596.95 which was slightly higher than the original quote but Pete did tell me the quote was from memory when originally enquiring.

If you intend getting any work done at Autotech I would suggest getting the Bus or Cab (£8.50) to Telford Shopping Centre as you'll need something to do whilst your work is being carried out. All the usual shopping centre shops and a big Wetherspoons for a cheap lunch and a pint. Pete gave me a lift there but I declined his offer of a pickup when my car was ready. I hadn't realised that it's about 5 miles away and and about a 30-40 min round trip. Nice of him to offer but must be a PITA for him.

Here's a piccy of the f****d motor. Apparently the well where it sits had a load of sediment/sludge in it. I'm guessing then that the regular cleaning of the drain is only boring a hole through the sludge rather than actually cleaning the well out.
Was also told that this wasn't the first replacement motor the car's had so this new one is probably the 3rd. :headbang:

Overall a 10/10 and Autotech are highly recommended.

Thanks for the update Jim. Glad to hear all fixed and it was good service. Photo: man, looks so corroded. Did you have any warning signs before the motor packed in? :driving:

Pete at Autotech must be the most highly regarded indie there is. I found him to be very knowledgeable, polite and caring and all I was there for was reprogramming the roof open/close!

Glad you got it sorted. seems that we all need to keep the drainage holes cleared out, especially if you're car is not garaged/a weekend toy. I'm assuming that when washing it the water drains away unless the drains are blocked then you are adding to problem as water will linger and rot the motor :(

The sludge/debris will be bits of leaf, insects, bird poo, tree sap etc that has washed down there over the years.

It had been getting noisier and slower since last summer. The last month or so the roof would only close half way and I'd have to assist it by hand.

Glad you got it sorted under warranty.

I have another problem now :-(
The motor isn't working properly. When the motor/pump starts up to lower the roof it takes 10-15 seconds before the roof opens. It sounds like the pump has no oil in it and is priming itself after it runs for the 10 seconds or so.
At Autotechs suggestion I've operated the roof several times in case it was airlocked but no joy.
Have now got another 300 mile round trip to Telford on the May 8th so they can have the roof off again to investigate. They're gonna get another pump in incase that's the problem.
I'm mighty P****d off at the moment (not with Autotech) as I thought this was sorted and was hoping for some trouble free motoring for a while. :-(

Did they use a new, OEM pump?

New from BMW.
It's just one of those things PVR. Just peeved at wasting another day and a tank of fuel and 300 more miles on the clock.
Suppose that was always one of the risks of getting it done there. :-)

Just back from Autotech.
They've put another motor in and this one sounds and performs as it should. Hopefully this is it now and my roof troubles are over.
Great service again from Autotech.

BTW........This is my 4th motor/pump. :-(
