XWC journal (Commando _Rob)

So another job done yesterday and one I’d been meaning to do for a while, having 4 young kids that like to come for a drive in the Z from time to time, I wanted to fit the airbag deactivation kit, was abit hesitant about drilling into the dash and centre console! But it went really well and was really happy with the end result.

Good thread this rob, interesting following the updates, keep it up  if it hadn't had a boot spoiler when you bought it would you have added one? I've considered adding one to mine, how is it fixed?

Thankyou, good to hear :driving:

Yes 100% would have been on my list of mods had it not been on the car when I bought it, I love the rear spoiler it really accentuates the ducktail rear of the Z4, it's currently held on by adhesive of some kind, as there's no screws/bolts on the inside of the boot. I don't think you'll regret adding one.

Nice looking car and good mods. There is an upside to the lockdown. We are 12 days in to it here in NZ. Great thread.

Thanks, just used self tapping screws into the plastic surround, I had to measure the depth to make sure they weren't too long so as not to go through the leather on the other side,I used a bradawl to prep the holes.
Cheers for the reply.

Soz another question.....how do you like the alpine speakers, sound wise? Do they fit in the door cavity ok....no cutting required?

Hey Davz, the Alpine speakers are really good quality sound wise, and one of the best mods for the money (All In the speakers cost around £50 including wires and connectors) they have really transformed the crap standard 6 speaker system, though i have got an aftermarket head unit which is probably more powerful than the OE head unit.

There was absolutely no cutting required and they fit The door cavity perfectly.

Another day in isolation and another Mod to the Z

This one is going to diverge opinion I’m sure!

so now there’s no orange at the rear, i wanted to do something with the orange at the front, I’ve seen a few different ideas of what others have done to remove the orange from the headlights, and didn’t want to spend a fortune on new headlights or buy clears that don't have xenon so thought I’d give tint spray a go, here’s a few pics of the results. It’s easily removed if I decide I don’t like it.

 thanks Rob, I have ordered the alpines and some sound deadening sheets too.....another job to do!

So been a few days since I’ve updated
And another mod added, this time I decided to colour code the rocker covers to give the engine bay abit of attention.

Was a straight forward job abit time consuming but Otherwise I simply used calliper spray paint and base primer the rest was a lot of prep time sanding and masking of the lines! This took the longest!

Ive not added a clear coat yet as wanted to see how it looks without, i was hoping for more definition between the oe silver stripes and the paint colour but I guess their both silver so that was always going to be hard to achieve, maybe with a clear top coat this maybe achieved, if anyone has any recommendations one ideal clear top coat spray that’s suitable for the engine bay please let me know. Oh and I added a 3.0 badge 😉

Little bit of maintenance done today took the boot lid bolts of and gave them a freshen up as had started looking abit worse for wear, hand compounded & Zymol waxed the whole car! a seriously hard arm workout! Need to get me a machine polisher  Also Bought a cheeky little purchase in the form of Z4 specific AC Schnitzer tail pipe, that I’m looking forward to add soon. Z4 has had some more attention recently, following a misfire that turned out to be a coil pack (thanks all that helped with advice on that one ) I replaced the dead one and bought a spare used Delphi 413110180 £39 for the 2 also replaced all 6 spark plugs whilst I was at it used car parts4less and NGK 408110105 cost £48 for all 6 which was the best deal I could find. Plugs were 25nm for torque setting when retightening

Must say noticed quite a difference, car definitely feels more responsive see pictures below of old coil and plugs. Plugs that came out were originals so 16 years & over 100k!!

Another update, and this time a performance one, in the form of a Carbon Induction kit by Simota. I’ve had one of these before & also a Gruppe M & there really isn’t much difference between them. I was really impressed with the Simota for the price so went for another.

Fitting was really easy and I think looks really good in the engine bay, I’ve only had it on for a few days and not had a chance to go for a proper spirited drive but the sound these make on there own is awesome but combined with the exhaust the sound is now truly epic! And I can definitely feel an improvement in throttle response, would ideally like to get it remapped now if anyone can recommend somewhere they’ve used for their Z4 3.0i ??

Rob. Quick question. Where did you get your clear side repeaters from please ?

Do you mean the clear side indicators under the bmw badges? Think I got them of eBay, will double check and if so post the link.

Hi Rob,
Any update on this, looked everywhere for this simota induction kit for the z4 but can only find one for the x5 or e46 with the m54 engine, did you get one for an e46 or specifically for the z4 and if so from where?
Thanks

Looks awesome by the way ‘ 8)

Thanks  The Simota I got is for a e46 330 its a perfect fit and sits nice and tight against the front scuttle panel and is in perfect line for the factory air channel, I'm going to add an additional flexy tube to enhance cold air feed aswell. I'd highly recommend one for the price and quality, they cost around £250 new but occasionally used ones come up for sale on eBay for way under. Go for it :driving:
