In fact I have a set of 17s which once again transform the car from the 18s.

The downside is less traction due to less contact path at the rear tyres since they are skinnier which however I reduce by less camber.

Off topic, but this explains some mildly disturbing behaviour I noticed on my winter 17s the other day - 11 degrees (too warm for the tyres, I know), slightly damp but not wet roads, and gentle acceleration from stationary at lights = the traction control light flickered all the way into 2nd and I wiggled my way away from the lights at low speed. Not happened since, but I didn't notice this at all last year. Must be because I had an alignment done on my 18s in the summer when I had Eibachs fitted, haven't had it re-done for my 17s (does anybody ?) and so the camber has resulted in less grip. Logical if I'd thought about it

Still learning something every day

My tc blinks all the time on my 18" winters.... sometimes hard shifting from 3rd to 4th even!

I presume its just too warm for winters... as my contact patch isnt much different (rears are 255 on my 18's, and 265 on my 19's)

Check it out here to see if the contact patch really changes much:

I think most of what oyu notice is however due to damp road, tyre compounds, temperature, etc.

244mm contact patch with summers, 213mm with winters, so not much. And to be honest, a smaller contact patch in icy / snowy conditions should give greater traction than a bigger one as the same mass is acting through a smaller area therefore increasing the force exerted by the tyres on the surface. I think.

Anyway, I think you are right cj, more to do with temperature.

Well I finally got round to having the X5 alloys painted gloss black. Heres how it looks now

Does it change anyones opinions now they are a different colour?

I think it looks better but need more pics!

it really changes the look of the whole car - and it looks very well, i dont know that a roadster could wear that much wheel, but it makes the coupe look more muscular and gives it a stance - i like it!

cheers Woody! Yea it is rather low, I will be adjusting the front up a tiny bit at the weekend hopefully.

Well as you requested heres a pic, its the best I can do for now

Ill try and get it cleaned at the weekend and get some better pictures up

Thanks chris g, thats exactly how i see it :D

Not usually a black wheel fan but on the blue coupe it really works for me , tied in with the black grill its a job well done mr mikey

Yes - despite reservations I think they work well on the coupe now black and paired with the body colour:)

I do really like them!

Although didnt think they looked all too bad in silver... But def an improvement now!

Chris the only time I get rubbing is when I hit a bit pot hole on the front wheels when driving straight as there is not much gap between the wing liner & the tread of the tyre :(

I try to avoid pot holes as much as possible anyway & im looking into ways of moving the arch liner further in

You can fit arch liner behind the bumper, this way you will gain extra 5-7mm. At the moment it fits on the top of bumpers edge. I have some pictures, will post later.
