Not sure about that. In both cases, the keyholder was / is not available to repair things.
 
I was out with some of the guys who are closer to it than me and from what I understood in a snatched bit of a conversation I overheard is there are no proper backups as it's expensive and the owner is in the middle of the desert, so unable to get to it. I hope the former is wrong and latter will of course just be a matter of time.

I spent a lot of time on Z4um and contributed an lot and used it a lot too. The deal is the owner hosts, users contribute their knowledge - IPR and as such share with a community giving and taking for everyones benefit. It is reasonable to expect a site owner to protect and preserve that IPR. It belongs to me, you, evereyone! Before anyone mentions cost then you shouldn't enter into the creation of a site without a committment to backup and protect. Z4um was THE place for Z4 info, it collapsed, took tons of info with it and as yet hasn't been equalled or re-instated, recovered etc. In fact the info is now over at least 4 forums - a real PITA. If it costs take advertising like pistonheads have. Hosting isn't just for Christmas, its for life!
 
ian in lancs, a very good statement, a single person brought down the entire forum forever.

But...we all remember z4um as a really great place, and whilst it was for most of the time, latterly the new member and post counts were very low, and there were a number of arguments and threads getting locked, and people being disrespectful to one another. Happily that's something that has never happened here, and I doubt it will.
 
yeah, this forum (I hope) is more of an evolution than a revolution... we're taking things step by step and making sure everything is done right. I can assure you I have backups coming out of my ears... sod the expense, you summ'd it up completely, it is a responsibility.

I realise the owner of x y z forum maybe on hols, but even when I am on hols i can connect, and I also have people here perfectly capable of standing in in my absense, so don't worry about that.

I am really sorry to see zroadster disappear, but I also don't like excuses. If expense was an issue maybe he needed to tell his members that and have a whip-round?

sp3ctre, just abut 6 weeks ago a bunch of guys and galls actually suggested that they donate and sent the owner of the site funds if i remember correctly!
 
i spend a lot of time on http://www.zroadster.net before i found this forum, sad if they are gone for good but IMHO this is a better forum in terms of layout, topics, orginisation etc.
