Wrapping the z4

I must be honest I'm not a fan of those pale greys that look like primer, but it's your car so your choice.

I've seen an orange E85 a couple of times, which I quite liked because it was so different to any colour BMW offered.

Toyed around with the idea of either orange or black. Ultimately ended up sticking with the silbergrau metallic. Its grown on me quite a lot.

I think nardo is too dull/blends in with traffic, black is a PITA to keep looking clean (when its clean, though ) and orange would take away From the Z4's distinctive body lines (although GenZed's red-orange is the perfect balance imo).

How much does a full wrap cost? How durable is it and does the paint underneath need to be in decent condition?

I ask because areas of my car are showing micro blistering from poor respray jobs by the looks of it,

Blistering might be rust or corrosion.
If you were going to wrap, the surface needs to be prepped or the surface defects will show through the wrap.

It’s best to tackle the problem with the paint first.

Wrapping is disposable, it’s a fun way of switching the look of your car on a whim for the rich, not a long term solution like paint.

Wraps can creep past the £5k mark, depending on finish, skill and the extent. IE into door shuts etc.

Perhaps a skilled wrap shop and a basic finish might cost £1500-£2000

Some backstreet garages could likely do it cheaper, but it depends if they cut on the car or not, and how good it goes into the shut lines.

I don’t think it’s a viable option. They can look good though, like the lava one posted above.

Full wrap is around £350-£400 depending on vinyl you're using and tools.
11-12metres, i bought 18metres

Shop will charge around £2k - £2.5k.
I'm lucky enough that my car hasn't got any rust, bubbling or surface defects except for some stone chips.

mine is nearly 2 years now. possibly moving to different colour next year or so.

👍

I'm pretty sure the micro blistering is from moisture trapped in the paint from spraying that eventually blisters through the paint, apparently it doesn't help if the car is outside in all weather, I've had the wing in question off and there is no sign of rust in the arches or coming through the back, the factory paint from what i can tell anyway still looks pretty good it's the damaged areas that's have been repaired over the years that's are the problem

I thought wrapping might be a cheaper alternative to having the car resprayed but guess it's not, and a full respray for a car worth 3k at best does not make any sense to me

Hi

Toying with thenidea of wrapping my e85 in nardo grey or similar has anyone wrapped theirs?
There was a member on here a few years ago that had has wrapped nardo grey. I thought it looked quite good.

Here’s mine that I wrapped myself, I had never done it before so I just taught myself and saved a small fortune :)

Went from white to satin black, I did the inside of the doors, all the shuts and in between all the panel gaps etc. as my OCD 100% would not allow me to be able to see ANY white 😅

Years ago I wrapped my old M roadster in telesto grigio

And then eventually pulled that off and replaced with nardo grey

And here’s how she looked before I sold her back to original paint

I’ll just add for me it was more about preserving the original paint. Track days can really do a number on your bumper so figured why not wrap the entire car but choose a color that could pass for factory and won’t have noticeable contrast against door jambs, engine bay, etc.

But you should know vinyl require maintenance too. Part of the reason I changed wraps is because the old one took a beating from leaving it parked outside 2 years during Covid. Little ceramic goes a long way for uv protection.

Ooh, thats a stunner. That colour looks very cool.

Did she require any paint repairs after removing the vinyl? Last time I looked at wraps (admittedly a good few years back) there were horror stories of paint being pulled off of cars when wraps were removed.

No issues. There is no way wrap is going to pull off factory paint. The only time this happens is when the panel had a respray and the paint wasn’t allowed to fully cure or the respray was done half ass.

A good wrap job should come off pretty easily. At most you might use a steamer to help lift the vinyl. But I pulled mine off by hand during the summer in 2 hours. Some wrap installers may use special glue to prevent the wrap from lifting around corners. That can make removal a little tougher but you can also specify they don’t use glue.
