"Wow" what a difference 4 makes

I had Goodyears on my 2003 and was in love with them, but availability and price lead me to put the Falken 452's on the leased 2007 I had. I too never looked back after changing out the RFT's. The Falken over in my part of the US seems to be a little known gem at the tire stores, research not the tire store lead me to them

OK, so the consensus is the RFT as done by Bridgestone are bad (they don't really bother me, go figure), Falkans are good, and we have at least one who likes the Michelin ZPs. As I understand it, the Michelin use a completely different wheel-within-a-wheel concept and not the extremely stiff sidewall setup.

Are the majority of you who are changing to Falkans pre-2006 and non sport package???

I put them on a 2007 with sport package. I am not a real suspension and tire kind of guy (one who notices the aspects of of tweaking suspension and tires for maximum performance or handling) but the only way I can explain it was I changed out some tight dress shoes for some really comfortable sneakers. It was night and day, and I was blown away that I would notice something like tires changing the Z4's dynamics.

Few questions

1) How will the RFT system in the car respond without it "seeing" the RF sensor on the wheels? Ive personally not understood what that button does anyway
2) Will fitting non RTFs void my warranty?
3) This is my 1st "sports" car and so in the past was not concerned with the brand of tyre i fitted to my cars - as they were no way as powerful as my new beast. So this thread discusses falken 452 and how they are amazing blah blah - but any experiences with other non RFT brands such as Dunlop, Pirrili etc etc??

Jamie
Jamie - One of the givens is that you do put the tire pressure monitors back in with the new rubber. The tire pressure monitor system (TPMS) measures air pressure and works just fine with non RFT tires.

Putting non RFTs on should not void your warranty beyond the tires themselves.

I personally went for the Michelin Pilot Sport PS2s and have found them to be an amazing tire for both street and track driving.

When I went in thinking I had a puncture the garage told me you can only fit runflats to the 108 alloys? I'm guessing this is not true then? Is it ok to replace one tire with a non runflat if I got a puncture?

Thanx :D

I've not long bought my Z and the previous owner replaced the rear passenger side with a standard tyre. I feel like the car is very juddery and hard ride, i get a lot of vibration in the seats and steering wheel to an extent. I'm putting some money aside to replace all 4 tyres as soon as possible. I'm considering a set of M6 style alloys, perhaps a wheel and tyre package from one of the companies off ebay. I do like my current 107 alloys, but its often cheaper to buy a whole new set (wheel & tyre) as opposed to just the rubber. I'm hoping that replacing the wheels and tyres along with tracking and balancing should sort out the harsh ride and loose steering.

Not sure if it been covered on this thread.
But can you mix RFT with non RFT :? ie front and backs.....

In the UK we don't get the same TPMS as you guys over the pond, it still only uses the ABS sensors rather than having monitors on the wheels/tyres, so nothing to swap over :)

No way would I do it, I think Plowy did for a while, maybe I'm wrong with that, but I definitely wouldn't

+1 I wouldn't mix either

I thought the ABS sensor was on the older models and somewhere around facelift we switched to the TPMS?

Did I imagine that??

That part of the manual is confusing as heck. That might explain why I don't get the yellow tire pressure warning light while I'm driving, rather in the morning after the tires have cooled if the temps have fallen to more fall-like levels. hmmmmmmmm.

So, how the heck do you know which you have? Are there indicators or do you have to pull the tire? :scratchhead:

1) Check your tire pressure and reset you pressure monitor. (!)
2) You might have a small puncture in your tire...it gets deflated overnight and in the morning you have warning light.
3) You have TPMS sensors.

Sorry to dig this one up but being a Z4 noob and having my first experience of runflats Ive got to say, their really bad. Im thinking about getting mine swapped over but was wondering what to do if I get a puncture. Im guessing a can of tyre weld will get me to closest garage but is that then the end of the tyre? Or can they be fixed?

Cheers

I'd always thought that using tyreweld or similar meant the end of the tyre, but my local firm said not necessarily. Some people also carry a cigarette-lighter-powered compressor in case of a slow puncture. I've a Halfords high speed one and, although not very small, it's very good.

Hmmmm, another thought... how well do those TPMS modules inside the tires react to having tire sealant all over them????

Hello...another Newbie here. Please give me a bit to get my avatar and signature fixed up. I have a Sterling Grey 2005 Z4 2.5 with the Sport package. I am in need of some new tires and was searching the internet for information and found this site. Thanks for all of the great information. I hadn't heard of Falkens before, but because of this thread, I've ordered a set of 452s and they will be installed on Thursday!

Congrats on 452s, you'll love em.

I'm pretty sure those TPMS modules wouldn't like that. They will probable get upset and will never show you the correct pressure again. :poke:
