Wish This Would Happen In The US!

If we had that in Canada, our roads are so bad for the most part, we'd go flying off into a ditch in a minute!

Doesn't go far enough IMO, as the article says most drivers routinely do 80mph anyway, we do this knowing we are breaking the law, yet we are not detered, Increasing the limit to 80mph would then encourage drivers to do 90mph, Drivers who have been breaking the law for decades are unlikly to stick to 80.
I think we should be adopting the same rules as the Germans where on certain areas of Motorways there is no speed limit.
Last week I drove down the M74 and in certain areas I would have felt very much at ease doing over 100mph due to the road width and layout and doing 70mph felt very much like doing 40mph.
On 3 lane or more motorways the outside lane should only be allowed to enter if you are going to do 80 or more, drivers found doing less than this and refusing to pull in should be fined as they cause more of a danger than those going faster. How many times have you been stuck behind some liberal self appointed traffic cop thinking he is doing the community a service by deliberatly slowing you down and holding you up.
Better still, as has been suggested before, the fast lane should just simply be renamed as the BMW lane

The state of Virginia recently raised the speed limit on the Interstate highways from 65 to 70. However, there is little to no tolerance for exceeding the limit.

That I believe is the biggest problem, there seems to be no logic behind speed limits, if the road is empty at 03:00 then why can't I do 100 mph if I want in a vehicle that can do it. On the other hand if the fog is that thick that I can't see the end of my car the speed limit should be reduced accordingly to 30 mph.

I'm all for more speed cameras on the motorway to enforce the new speed laws if they are fair, also if someone's doing well bellow the displayed speed limit in the 2nd or 3rd overtaking lane they should be fined too, as should tailgating. As for middle lane hoggers, well public ridicule and flogging seems like an appropriate punishment :)

I agree with most of your points. However! Your train jumped the tracks at more speed cams. My niece and her husband are sheriff's in the US. I asked them why the law was so keen on pulling folks over for speeding. The answer was an eye opener. For the most part there are three or four mains reasons they do. They are listed in priority.

1, it's just a reason to stop a person and check for drink driving or transport of drugs.
2, lots of police offices have a ticket quota to determine an officers job performance. Even if they do not have an official quota system. The chief will still question an officer that does not issue as many tickets as their workmates.
3, if one drives fast and in an unsafe manner.
4, the cop has had a bad day and wants to take their frustrations out on someone.

Number three is the only valid reason.

I would be ok with a simple fine system with no points for (casual speeding) a speed tax if you will. But! if one is driving fast in a dangerous manner or speeding in a residential area. Then add points to the fine. Speed as the only factor that results in a crash is actually a rare thing.

Cheers

On the rare occasions I get back up the road to my father's place (in Dalgety Bay, so just down the road from you Nosa !) the section of the M74 I think you're talking about is my favourite bit of the journey - great piece of road, especially at 5am as the sun comes up 8)

Back on topic though, it's not possible to drive in the fast lane down south at anything less than 80 in a reasonable amount of traffic without someone ending up tailgating you almost instantly. High speed on motorways is rarely an issue, until such time as a tw@t like this guy gets involved :

Speed as all relative to road conditions. I welcome the 80mph proposal, but fear that, as others have mentioned, some will see this as an excuse to drive at 90mph+ in unsuitable conditions.

If the M6 is empty at 3am, I'm sure that 100mph+ is safe with the right driver behind the wheel. However, I'm sure sometimes 60mph is too fast in rush hour on some motorways - especially in the hands of some less exeperienced/idiotic drivers.

i think people who drive too slow on the motorway are more dangerous than the speeders, people who drive at 40-45 should be shot, ok drive at this speed when its busy otherwise bloomin speed up :headbang:

It IS happening in the US. Lots of states are 75mph already, and Texas just raised theirs to 85.
The entire NE with the exception of Maine is stuck on 65 MPH. The Mid-Atlantic and South is at 70 MPH. Most of the West is at 75 MPH and there are the few exception that are at 80 MPH. In Pennsylvania where I live there was an effort to raise the max speed limit to 75 but that was killed. Also a lot of the local roads that had a limit of 55 MPH have been reduced to 45 MPH.... :x

Think about it. The higher standard of training required to be issued a driver's license in Germany and some other European countries and the the stricter policies governing the use of the left lane make it work. Changing the limit laws in this country without make drivers smarter and enforcing left lane discipline would have little positive effect and probable negative consequences. No, I am not against raising the speed limits. In fact, I vote with my right foot everyday. But given the collective IQ and proven ability of the average driver (who scares the sh@# out of me every day) I am leery of the idea.
