I started using winter tyres about 5 years ago, I'd never go back now. You need to have experienced the difference to get why you need them. Like the difference between discs and drums. Or radials and crossplies. Or vinyl and CD.

You must be old. Radials vs crossplys

Still waiting to try my winters out. Perry has two of them though.

Winter tyres work - simples. I have to commute 60 miles a day and it might snow while I'm at work. With a BMW that's no good unless you fit winters!

Rubbish! :poke: I did a daily 100 mile commute in my E30 M3 on the one set of tyres.

One day I was snowed in, but I got out :driving:

I'd love to see how your driving God skills would tackle the hills that I live at the top of. Is there a class I can take?

3 winters in a row (not last one) were so bad in the South East that even with my X5 I had to get winters. Snow was 30 - 50cm on the ground and my X5 slid down my drive on M+S tyres and the drive has a tiny incline.

On winters, I could at least drive on the pure ice roads (not sure why you think it does not help on ice as they certainly do).

Just watch any of the tyre comparison programs, where winter tyres stop the car in less than half the distance.

And the final point, it keeps the summer wheels in one piece whilst the salt and other chemicals are on the road during those months.

I'm getting all Xmasey now & was 3.5 degrees @ 7am this morning in... Kent when I first went to collect my other half.

Winter's definitely coming...

Not God skills, just careful, and I was snowed in on the works car-park, with an uphill slope to the unsalted uphill road.

Class you could take?

Advanced Motorist, and skid-pan training may help. :)

p.s. even I would give up in winter if I had an automatic Mercedes - they really are useless in the snow and ice! :o

Weird you say that about autos, I find them easier to drive in the snow... Unless it's a Mercedes-specific issue.

The older (eg, W124, W140) Merc autos seemed fine in the snow (basic / no traction control) but later electronic ones were not so good, no 'snow and ice' mode but too clever for their own good. Also BM autos similar. Much prefer 4WD for snow and ice, and imho winter tyres are essential....

Plenty of experience on ice, no skid pan training required - I was more interested in your skills to make summer tires climb hills in the snow. This thread is for winter tyres, if you don't believe in them that fine but don't offer advise to people that you are not qualified to give. :poke:

Biggest challenge I face are muppets who drive too close behind - think I need a big sign saying RUNNING WINTER TYRES, DONT USE MY CAR TO STOP YOURS!

I have, I don't, I am  :poke:

Hi Fella, these have only just gone up & are still for sale

I'll send u a PM

The driving gods will just have to rely on their driving skills to move in winter

Lets put it this way

Been competeing in offroad trials for ten years

I buy winter tyres for everything

You are preaching to the converted. Well, some of us anyway.

I too would not feel comfortable driving on summer tyres in the snow, even with my X5 as you can not defy gravity when you come down an icy slope.

Had my vehicles on their winter rubber for some weeks now , i prefer the grip in the wet as well as the cold & snow .
Bridgestone Blizzak's on the van & Pirelli Sottozeros on the Audi
