Winter tyres-thoughts?

I've just got back from a little jolly to pick up some winter tyres I bought from a well known Internet auction site and for less than £100 I'm covered for the next 8 months. I decided to go down this route as the Zed has the Runflats from when I bought it but looking at the manufacturing dates I saw the oldest tyre was made in 2008!! Might explain the terrible ride/handling issues :? This winter tyre option has bought me a little time to make a firm decision re summer tyres or RFT and I feel reassured that being RWD I might have a bit more of a chance this winter than if I ran 7year old Runflats  I bought a pair of Sunny (?) 225/40/18 with only 2k miles on them for £60 and a pair of Contis 255/35/18 for the rear for £30 no punctures, repairs, cuts, splits or bulges on all 4 tyres-for £90!!

Proof of the pudding is in the running I know-what's everyone else's thoughts?

ditch the RFs and buy a set of Goodyear for all year use.

IMHO there is no point in having two sets of tyres.

I never have - even with the E30 M3 :driving:

[I'm sure that others will have a differing opinion  ]

Depends where you're located then right? I've got all seasons, drive the car year round except for maybe a total of a week when we have over a foot of snow around and it lingers for awhile.

True, except I still managed to drive my M3 from work, up an incline in a foot of snow, and then later on 5 miles of black-ice on an untreated "A" road - all on normal daily tyres.

If you live in the Glencairns then winter may be a little different :o

So, Zedsdead, where are you?

All season tyres are a compromise - not as good as summers in the summer and not as good as winters in the winter!
Despite not seeing snow very often winter tyres provide better grip when temps drop below 7. For the cost of a set of wheels (which are an asset that can be sold on) I'd rather have a set of tyres that perform.
If they save me a prang and my excess then they have paid for themselves.

I'd have to agree with Scooba Steve here specially about the tyres providing better grip below 7 deg road temp (not air temp). Being in deepest Isleworth/Hounslow I'm not sure I'm going to need the performance of the tyres but definitely the grip. And hopefully better ride and handling than the old RFTs!

I hope you know the origin of cheap tyres purchased on eBay. Way too many are recovered from crashed cars etc. for me to fit them. My life's worth more than £90 for a cheap set of tyres...

As for Winter tyres. Some swear by them, but I've not seen a Winter in the last decade that I've had any issues in either the Zed or a RWD Jag that concerned me or demanded more grip. Guess it depends on what you do and where you live.

Yep, but with 2 turbos, 350hp, 700nm torque and Jags approach to sports autos it can be hairy enough even on a summer day. :)
Obviously with a bit of snow you just drive accordingly and a bit sideways :driving:
