Winter detailing

Wondering what peoples detailing process is like in the winter months compared to the summer? I try and get it done every other week, but won't look to do any strip wash, clay, wax as the weather is just too unpredictable to start that process. Generally will wait until spring to get the polisher out and get everything swirl free again for the spring.

A frozen hose pipe this morning took an hour or so to defrost, but finally got the water running to the power washer. 3 hours later after APC, snow foam, Korrosol, rinse, then 2 coats of Sonax BSD provides a decent finish. It's a funny product really, super hydrophobic, great shine, lasts a good few washes, but doesn't actually feel that nice on the paint. It's a bit grippy, not slick and smooth like a good wax does, yet it's significantly better at water/dirt repellency, lasts longer and much quicker to use....wondering if it makes traditional waxes almost redundant?

Sorry to answer your question with a question but did you have the 224s finished yourself or were they on the car when you got it - thinking about that finish on mine rather than standard silver?

Yeah, got these done a couple of years back now at Premier Body Shop in Ware with a custom paint mix to try and contrast the Ruby Black paint. TBH they were great for the first year, but haven't held up as well as the wheels on my TTRS, which I had powder coated, and I would go that way when doing them again.

Sooooo...... shiny. 8)

Ha, thanks...yeah black cars really look stunning when clean like that, but you see every mark on the paint when you detail them...like 'where the F did that come from?!'.....going to buy another grey or white car next time round!

Wow, you should be so proud of that job, absolutely beautiful.
Loving your work sir.

Thanks...been detailing for a few years now, so got a good routine going on! TBH I quite enjoy detailing the Z, it's small enough to get it done relatively quickly compared to the M5 I had a little while back, which took forevvvvvveerrrr...

haha....yeah, happily give you a few pointers on how what to do. What condition is your black MC in...? They're a bugger to keep clean and the paint seems to pick up swirls and marks even when you haven't driven it :headbang:

Considering we are both in Essex we should do a mini meet in the spring....genuinely haven't seen another MC this part of TOWIE in my 4 year ownership.

I see sunshine in your pictures. Good job on the winter detail. Im not taking my roadie out until March. Gritting season finishes then. The other black cars I am using dont look like yours though. I just wash them down twice a week quickly even if its just water and a sponge. The driveway gets too icy if I mess around too much. I'll try the products you mention though as your car looks great. I need to make more effort with my dailies I think.

..every time somebody washes a car with a sponge I murder a kitten.
Ok to save kittens I will use a wash mit and throw it away after use every time. The level of crap I am talking about would wreck a mitt. Blasting it into the paint with a 300 barg pressure washer is also lovely. Oh I forgot, snow foam application at 23.7 deg c would loosen the debris so I could turn my washer down to 299 barg. Everything scratches paint. Hence why my z4 is sorned for the winter. I am sure even its mouse hair winter cover is scratching its paintwork. Note to self. Keep clear of detailing section, too many police. At least until I build my new garage and can clean and polish in secret. With no photos online so noone will know if my microfibre cloths were tumble dried at the right temperature.
Unfortunately my daily e70 carbon black x5 gets used as a bit of a van at times. I may have to powerwash the inside if not careful. Oops there goes another kitten.

 ...that did actually brighten my day considerably. You think this is bad, you should try a post on detailingworld.co.uk! Being fairly pragmatic about it, in years gone by I used to just do the basic stuff much like yourself but the sponge thing was the one hard lesson I learned after literally wrecking the clear coat on my black Z3M after one winter. I didn't actually realise that sponges were so bad for swirls. Just changing that one thing made a world of difference.

i use autobrite tar and glue remover at work... its fantastic. All the AB stuff is great tbh, i use most of their products for my Decontamination stages.

Not all sponges....

I use this (as well as a mitt) as it foams up the soap so well.
