Wind Screen Question?

my dad had one about 3 years ago on his z4. he kept it, and now its on mine! its an a1 product and being transparent its hardly noticeable. i certainly recommend it

I made mine this weekend. It was not that hard to do. I can see a few ripples on the glass as I did my best to keep the lines cut cleanly. People that have seen it, think it looks great. :)

Let me tell you the sad part. :( I got the Plexiglas at Home Depot. It comes with a protective cover so that scratches are not done while you are working on the piece. I got it all cut except for some fine sanding I was going to do on the edges and took the protective coating off the glass. When I did, I discovered a scratch. It had to be there before I started working as the protective coating was intact with no scratches.

So now it looks very nice except for that one scratch. My wife says “don’t worry about it, nobody but you can see it”, but I know it is there. The good news is that the piece of Plexiglas I got, is large enough that I can do another one so I may just do that.

Congrats on the job! I think a few pics are in order.
Sucks about the scratch but the next one will be better for sure. In fact, I made a second one for mine to put a little more arch in the top. The first one was basically flat on top and looked a bit odd from the rear.
The third will be pretty much perfect!

Good news, could not stand it, the scratch. So I did one more with what I had left and this one is perfect. Even a nit picker like me could not find a flaw. The secret is to never ever take the protective cover off the Plexiglas until you are completely done. Including sanding and fine wet sanding the edges. Also when you cut the edges, I did it on a band saw, cut just outside the lines. I then used a belt sander, that I put upside down in a vise, locked the trigger on and sanded down to the outline I had marked on the Plexiglas protective covering. Really works slick. I spent too much time the first one trying to stay exactly on the line. By sanding down to the line if you get what I am saying you can see as the Plexiglas is sanded down to the guide lines. Plexiglas does not really cut, it melts and you have to pick off the melted pieces as you go. Really not hard to do. Took me less than an hour to do the second one. :D

I ordered one of those decals off eBay that says “Roadster” on it that looks like cut glass. It is going to look first class, I think as nice as the expensive one. When I get it I will post photos. Thank you Kurts05Z4 for your help and inspiration. That is what this forum is for. :D

My zed came with the net wind screen. I'm thinking about this one from Roadster Solutions: http://64.225.94.154/ShopSite/page52.html . Has anyone tried this one and what is you opinion? :headbang:

Thanks,

Yes I've purchased this version a few months ago and i'm totally satisfied with it. It's discreet, flows very well with the car's lines and performs flawlesly. I did apply a very small quantity of plexi-safe lubricant on the edges of the center piece, preventing the thing from squeaking in it's rubber frame during body flex.

I work a lot with Plexiglass and acrylic (fixtures and tooling) and you have figured out all the little tricks to working with it!

I told everyone once I got a chance to post a photo of my home made windscreen, I would.

I took a trip at speeds over 90 for several miles with my home made windscreen just to test how it worked at relatively high speed. The wife is very particular about her hair and not to kindly told me that if I wanted her to ride with her I had better find a way to fix the windiness of the Zed with the top down. Looking at the OEM ones and other after market screens, with the advise of others on the forum I made one myself. It was not that difficult.

It works outstanding. To keep it from rattling you have to line it with felt. You may see some of the felt slipped and I will have to put it back in place. It did not rattle much at all and the windscreen passed my wife’s hair test with flying colors. If anyone is interested in making your own, I will be providing a template, and supply list and instructions soon. I will let you know when I can provide it.

One small bolt takes it out and you can store it. It does not rub the top when it comes open or closed. cost was less than $40.00 with basic home tools.

Does anyone have the site from the OP?

Some pretty awesome custom work here. I'm the most un-handy person I know when it comes to building stuff unfortunately, I may have to try and talk a buddy into doing this for me though. Great stuff!

Kurts05Z4: You have a PM

How hard is the plexi glass to cut? I have a 30 gal air compressor in the garage, should I buy an air saw and blade? Do the aluminum channels that go between the roll bars need to be adjusted?

And finally.....I have the factory brakets on the roll hoops. How do I remove those? I did a search and came up short.

Thanks for the help!! :driving:
